Re: Greywind is Dead. Long Live Talon!
I have used both OpenOffice and LibreOffice on my OpenSUSE desktop. I switched to LibreOffice some time ago and never looked back. I cannot in good conscience recommend OpenOffice to anyone. Without using certain patches it was like playing Russian Roulette with five bullets in the revolver. It woul...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
I may be splitting hairs here but i was led to believe that the platypus belongs to it's own subset of mammals called Monotremes. This to me disqualifies them as true mammals and they belong to their own kind. You are right that they are monotremes and wrong about them therefore not being true mamm...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Are you saying that mammals wouldn't evolve given time? Multicellular life wasn't inevitable in my view. Much less any such highly specific function and arrangement of organs. You do realize that evolution is based on the non random selection och random variation. this to me says that mammal-like c...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Well, I think I heard once real world lactating, non mammal creature. Sadly I can't remember what it was. You're probably thinking of avian regurgitation, some varieties of which involve a product sometimes called "crop milk" which does involve lactation based around the same core set of hormones w...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
The loroi have probably seen this more often in mammals than the other way around so it wouldn't be shocking to them. If they wonder they can just compare us to the delrias whom i understood is very similar to us in the gender ratio. I don't know their dimorphism so i could be wrong here. Maybe the...

Re: Page 102
wings I heard a story once about 2001: A Space Odyssey . In this story, Kubrick had his design team come up with the most realistic spaceship designs they could, based on engineering principles rather than aesthetics. He then made modifications to the designs they created, stripping away almost all...

Re: Anti-gravity
Drop pods are basically an insane form of airdrop. There are levels and varieties of insanity. From what I remember of Starship Troopers, a certain percentage of the MI are killed by their own equipment every drop. But from what I remember of Star Trek's transporters, death is the least interesting...

Re: Anti-gravity
If anti-gravity technology is a thing in this setting, does this mean drop pods that didn't turn it's occupants into jelly would be possible in this setting? My understanding is that anti-gravity technology in fiction is just another way of accelerating or decelerating objects. By "drop pods" I bel...

Re: Loroi Sexuality continued (no politics this time)
If the Loroi were intended as telepathic ground troops, then they presumably wouldn't be too dangerous. They would have little if any of their own air-support, and presumably no space-superiority of their own. They would, instead, get used in the less threatening ground role, and could be either is...

Re: Loroi Sexuality continued (no politics this time)
Of course, this does raise the question of why they aren't designed around the assumption of sufficient technology to not need any of this. You have anticipated my response, I see. The Loroi claim to be a warrior race, and I am willing to believe them. I believe that that is what they were created ...

Re: Loroi Sexuality continued (no politics this time)
How would you expect a Loroi skull to look different from a Human skull? Personally, I would expect the Loroi to have significantly larger brains than humans have, given the rapidity with which human brains have shrunk over the past 20-30 thousand years. Human females have historically had a tenden...

Re: Loroi Sexuality continued (no politics this time)
The Barsam are mono-gendered and hermaphroditic. I don't have a lot of hard details about their reproductive mechanisms, but the concept is that they don't have "sex" per se -- the exchange of gametes is like exchanging business cards -- and they don't pair bond, but instead raise offspring solo. S...

Re: Cultural shock/differences
Since sex is not that common and not considered as a "lowly" activity in Loroi culture, I'd be surprised if it was abused in the swear-word lexicon. I wouldn't be too sure about that, actually. Sanctioned sex between a worthy Loroi female and a Loroi male is not a "lowly" activity in Loroi culture,...

Re: Reflections on the Hypothetical [fanfic] (DISCO INFERNO)
More or less immediately after Arioch posted an odd little factoid about the autogenerated version of Loroi Trade, I began writing what I hoped would shape up to be a short, funny little joke of a story. I failed that task in all possible ways; unable to keep it short, unable to make it funny, unabl...

Re: Distraction thread
io9 seems to have gotten ahold of it. I don't know how to feel about that. I only shared the link here because this forum is so small. It's still very much an unfinished work in progress, and Mr. Johnson probably doesn't not want a large audience to see his rough, unfinished work. The video was set...

Re: Distraction thread
Wow... great video! Do you know who made it? A man named Paul Johnson, who tends to use the name "OtaKing" when on the internet. He also created a Dr. Who anime thing that you can probably find after a few seconds of searching. This one looks much better than his Dr. Who animation, though. ...

As long as we're sharing sci-fi links, I think this is pretty impressive.
(The video portion is higher def on youtube, but that video is completely silent, and it syncs so well with the Battle of Endor music).

Partial inventory: 400 undershirts, 400 underpants, 80 dress uniforms, 400 pairs of pants, and exactly 799 socks. Considered self-explanatory. One trombone, slightly bent. Considered a curiosity. One chess board and set of ornate playing pieces, almost 80% complete. Captain Jardin substitutes seemin...

Re: Page 101: And I will take VERY good care of you!
It's not said that we are fully incompatible. I don't expect offsprings, but we may use some of their chemicals. For example, in emergency you can give cleaned loroi blood to human. As copper based bloodsells would work as easily in human veins. Maybe he tire easily, but in theory he should survive...
