Re: When did you join the forums /start reading Outsider?

Outsider was up to page 34 was when I first stumbled over the website... I've been coming back ever since! I remember quite distinctively re-reading the comic plus all the insider material some time in 2005/06 while listening to Kaiser Chiefs' album "Employment" on CD. So now every time I hear their...

Re: The Astronomy Thread

Fantastic News! As you know I've been following the progress of Rosetta, from my periodic posts of it's achievements on these forums. It's been over 10 years in the waiting, but finally Rosetta has just recently entered into orbit around comet 67P (Churyumov-Gerasimenko), a first in space exploratio...

Re: The Astronomy Thread

Good news!

The Churymov-Gerasimenko comet has entered Rosetta's sights, and more interestingly, it appears to be a contact binary!

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

I didn't fill it in because I wanted to donate, not invest. And given the silliest sort of things that can make their goals on KickStarter? I don't think there's much Bristol Spaceplanes could have lost by doing it. By making it investment only... well, they aren't following up all the avenues they...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

Ah. I think I missed the 'sub-orbital' part, although if it can do it in a single stage, that's still better than SpaceShipTwo (but with less passengers). I think a bigger problem Bristol Spaceplanes has is... their donation system. I would have donated something to them, but they use an investment...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

Today I discovered Bristol Spaceplanes Ltd. They are working on updated 1960s spaceplane design concepts, using existing aerospace technologies. A two-man SSTO of theirs called Ascender could be operational before Skylon. A few years after that, they hope to have SpaceCab running, a 6-passenger cra...

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre

In a bit of free time I've managed to claw in recently, I felt like obliging my somewhat "anoraky" tendencies, and scanned through the Umiak lore and technology. I noticed a slight inconstancy however with regards to Umiak plasma weapons. On the warship class page seven plasma focus types are descri...

I don't have much time these days so I don't think this has already been posted, most I assume would of picked this up already, but for those that haven't. Saturn might be birthing a new moon ... I'll peg the the BBC article also. http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/cassini/20140414/pia18078-640.jpg

Stuff of interest perhaps?

After bumming around in the UCL academic world for slightly too long, I've finally found some time to drag myself onto the forums, and conjure up enough effort to post... So I thought I would do some sharing. There are a couple of things I've been reading lately that I think people on here would fin...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

I always felt the Loroi would be more of a cinerary urn like culture, especially considering their penchant for large grandiose mosaics. So I definitely got the feel of a ceramics focused arts culture, a bit similar to the Romans and Greeks who both made wide use of cinerary urns and mosaics (and ot...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

Just out of curiosity Arioch, as your last WIP update got me thinking (dangerous I know...), what references are you looking to, if at all with your interior shuttle design? I was thinking maybe stuff like the flexible layout inside the C-130, or are you simply sitting down and just thinking, "If I ...

Re: Cultural shock/differences

Well spitting in someone's face is battery plain and simple, so I guess you could call that an incitement to violence. (Tangent) Which is what irritates me with this anti-technologist protesters at Balcombe, Sussex, not just because their wrong (that's a different rant), but because my cousin-in-law...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

It's not so clear cut... For example it was scientific belief until recently in the Royal Navy that the higher levels of carbon dioxide in submarines over a 6 month tour was dangerous to women's health, and extremely dangerous if they were possibly pregnant (Due to the nature of RN submarine operati...

Colourful description yes, but in reality no. Your blood won't boil, you're forgetting that your circulatory system, and other systems such as the lymph are totally contained, and isn't exposed to the vacuum. It remains subjected to your bodies internal pressure, also of note is you wouldn't explode...

"If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don't understand quantum mechanics." I'll stick to gearboxes, clutches, high stress materials and all manners of mechanical trickery methinks. Not to say I'm not keen on the ol' quantum physics, I always enjoyed the fact it didn't make any (classic...

Those retractable wing's are clearly (he says knowingly) control surfaces for operation in atmosphere. I would be extremely surprised if they where utilised while in vacuum... Anyhows, let alone the Loroi not being great on the sarcasm front. From my own personal experience, Americans don't seem to ...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

I've been drunk many times, but I've never seen pink elephants, nor do I know anyone who has. I'm not sure how that idea entered the popular consciousness. Seeing Pink elephants is a euphemism for Alcohol-related psychosis , and should only occur when you're suffering alcohol withdrawal as you're p...
