Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)
This thing looks like a ration packet. The pad would have straighter lines and more rectangular form. Considering the biochemical differences between humans and loroi interesting things could happen once he opens that ration pack. For a human the content could be yummy but for a loroi it could perh...

Re: What does YOUR Name Mean?
Check, Sasha is short for Alexander or Alexandra. Had a ‘wait, what?’ moment upon first hearing that. Had same feeling when learnt that Dick = Richard and Bill = William. I imagine this could be whispered in Alex’s ear by Beryl in the Russian translation of the comic It is very unlikely because Ber...

Re: What does YOUR Name Mean?
Since we're on the subject of names, I found something curious: despite being pretty famous in Nordic and Germanic folklore, and once having been a very popular girl's name, Gunnhilda (Gonnhildr, Gunhildr, and various other variations) no longer appears to exist as a name. According to statistics o...

Re: Page 159: Bedroom Eyes
not necessarily. It might take days to weeks to recover a stricken shuttle depending on the trajectory and the general situation of the system, so it can be worthwhile to provide some limited facilities to the surviving crew. I can see the collection of games on Alex's data pad getting used quite h...

Re: Terran Nuclear Tech (split from Terran Q&A)
If there's one factor about space travel that is in humanity's favor, it is the timescales that events happen at. A computer's fast processing power might become less important when the next closest intercept is measured in days. :P Or centuries if you do not have access to FTL... Let's just say in...

Re: Terran Nuclear Tech (split from Terran Q&A)
A starship in Outsider -- even an unarmed one -- is a very expensive piece of hardware. Ramming things with starships is not a very cost-effective use of resources. Kinetic energy of a collision increases with the square of velocity but only linearly with mass (KE=1/2mv^2), so at high velocities, y...

Re: Terran Nuclear Tech (split from Terran Q&A)
Well is there any chance to use drones to boost Loroi numbers or are drones to cowardly for Loroi taste An unmanned starship would not be less expensive to construct than a manned starship, (it might be more expensive, due to the automated systems that would need to replace the crew's function), an...

Happy to see you're back and continuing the story. ..Thank you, and welcome to colonial space! Just a small comment here - perhaps it should be Terran space? Just referring to it as "colonial space" doesn't sound right in my ears... colonial? Colony of what? Humanity have intill recently been alone...

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre
If they hadn't a personality, Historians would be poor personality constructs. From that it seems to follow that they can grow and learn. So they might come out of the factory all the same, but after a few tours of duty, Historians should be distinct individuals. Of some reason I think of the EMH d...

Re: Page 158 : All fire and Green eyes
So what did the construct mean by "aboard your ship" – did it mean the shuttle, as the context here seems to suggest? I am a bit confused. Considering that the "flowerpot holoprojector" is carried as cargo on the shuttle and it did something prior to installing the "pocket historian", that is proba...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
How many military ships do the Loroi have total. I don't have precise numbers, but my best guess would be between two and three thousand. How quickly can they construct these ships? I would imagine that shipbuilding takes a similar amount of time as it does today; some months or years depending on ...

Re: Page 156: Dun... dun... DUUUUUUN
It's hard to know what may or may not have happened behind closed doors, but live Historians have only been seen publicly at a few events at which they were required to attend in person (as a condition of the alliance). During these events, the live Historians kept to themselves and only interacted...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread
The Terran Mjolnir is powered by a capacitor that is charged by the ship's fusion engines. Explosively pumped weapons are destroyed as they fire, so they're not very useful as starship weapons. I suppose it's theoretically possible to build a firing chamber that can withstand the thermonuclear blas...

Re: Page 157: "This is not MY datapad!"
The barsam probably know because the Historians know. Ie, the Historian construct on the Barsam vessel knew that his on-shuttle container hadn't been destroyed and the container has audio/visual capabilities that the historian construct could access to realize that the shuttle was fine. The histori...

Re: Page 157: "This is not MY datapad!"
The Historians certainly have been around the local bubble for ages, but it is kinda difficult to intercept signals if there aren't any (first radio broadcast is dated in 1906, with first radio signals being transmitted in second half of the 19th century. And keep in mind radio waves have limited s...

He can just say that he was looking for information about attack on bellarmine. And he could be truthful about it since it is entirely possible that he intended to do that before the construct contacted him. It is possible that there is a copy of a sensor log in there, perhaps down to an actual pic...

It is entirety possible that what got installed in the pad is just a chat interface and the real historian construct are the one in the "trashcan". I doubt the pad can handle a self aware AI.
