Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

Would they even have Mitochondria? Or they have more than one type of Mytochondria, for different purposes. Soia-Liron organisms presumably have cellular organelle(s) that perform analogous functions, but the fact that Earth organisms' mitochondria have separate DNA from the cell nucleus implies th...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread

I think the obvious question is how important those various member states are and what kind of power they wield. Our idea as an audience on how such a thing should play out is informed by real life politics, where two or three superstates can dictate international politics. However we see several Ou...

Re: Page 130: Gotta Go Fast

Perhaps the Loroi will launch their counter attack and both sides will wipe each other out, leaving humanity to pick up the pieces. :P From a human perspective this is the ideal situation. America became a global superpower in WWII because it had been actively developing it's technology like all ot...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

Are the turrets and launchers on civillian ships operated by civilian or military caste? I'm assuming unless they have permanent escort they'd need some way to defend themselves.

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

... so what is "anus" in Loroi? tiio If we're doing this, and god knows why we are, we may as well be specific. Does that refer to the one specific part of anatomy, or just any expanding and contracting entrance in general anatomy. I.E. does it mean anus specifically, or is it a general term like s...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

What I'm getting at is that even if the Loroi did police that kind of thing, the nature of sanzi would probably make it a lot less brutal and implacable than the real world attempts. It being harder to lie makes it harder to call an honest statement false. Maybe it'd just make the whole thing more ...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

Random question, but is there a plan, explicit or implicit, for the millions to billions of military caste born during this war and because of it when and if the Loroi actually WIN? Having multitudes of bored soldiers and decommissioned ships seems like a recipe for disaster.

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

When one works with complex systems, a "null" will invariably have value, simply because blank space that you can actually orient something around(as opposed to a formless void or a more obvious value with more weight) will invariably come in handy. You see this a lot in digital animation and comput...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

To be fair to the word Harpy, there is a word for Mermaid. With three planets to draw from there's probably a word that's "like that other thing, but a bird" in there somewhere, or if not that then some kind of decal. Mythologies have enough birdmen that you can assume any culture with a lot of avia...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

The idea of a lack of restrictions in a caste system is ridiculous. That's the point of a caste system . The Loroi civilization is a military dictatorship with rigid and all encompassing civic roles. That's how you wrote them. I'm not sure I understand your objection. Loroi civilians have restricti...

The military caste is entirely self contained. You're born into it and you die in it. Nobody just gets into it.

hi hi Check out these cool human signs that represent "punch," and "hug," and are neat archeological finds. ;) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/Ampelmann_gr%C3%BCn_%26_rot.jpg As an anthropologist friend of mine is fond of saying, it is really, really hard not to bring your own c...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

I thought I'd throw my two cents into this too. The thing about signage and symbols is that they need context to work. To understand the meaning of the above mentioned bathroom symbols, you need to know in advance, what a bathroom is and that sometimes there are separate bathrooms for different var...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

The thing about those symbols is they're common enough with other symbols in the same context, that are similar to other figures, that you can guess fairly accurately what they're for. If you took a random sample of a hundred bathrooms you'd have enough symbols for male and female and enough disable...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

The obvious counterpoint to that is that cached data has to have an origin point somewhere , the problem is though that the Soia themselves were largely spacegoing so logically, any cached data would disappear with wherever those ships went off to. But that kind of proves the point, in that it's a n...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

Aren't Barsam and Loroi archaeological appearances like, hundreds of thousands of years divided? Isn't it probable that the Soia's needs just shifted from using Barsam to Loroi for one reason or another, even if they could be created for similar reasons initially? It's true that there is no unambig...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

I don't see much of a need to create a foot soldier capable of enormous physical strength in a system where you can rely on spaceships and ground vehicles for transportation, projectile weapons for combat, and brain powers for lifting heavy objects. And if you did, you might create something that l...

I think people are focused on Beryls opinion of Alex being the only thing about this, rather than her not actually knowing how to handle the situation in the way she wants. However she was whenever she met a male last, there was zero ambiguity on why they met or for what purpose. They're a species w...

Re: Pages 121, 122: Followers

Yes, but that would require a ship, or ships, be positioned to attack the Loroi but refuse to. If I understand the details right firing like that also opened them up to detection. For it to be the Umiak they would have to prioritize attacking an unaffiliated ship over attacking a ship that's present...
