Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

Why would mechs cost more then construction vehicles to maintain? Thats an assumption. What we do know so far. Synthetic muscles are cheap, thats across the board based on synthetic muscles that already exist. HAZEL muscles are expected with the right plastic film capable of 2 million cycles, thats...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

That's a specialized vehicle that loses any offensive capability. A mech would be able to put down its weapon, dig and then rearm. Tanks can be fitted with dozer blades for some quick digging/obstacle clearing (post-WW2 Soviet T series for example have the BTU-55) if needed. Which is good enough fo...

Re: Outsider 181: Foot-in-Mouth Disease

Yep. So a human would be thinking “this is a job for the comfortable uniform and fluffy warm jacket.” But I understand the Loroi place special cultural significance on their caste body armour... in which case Fireblade going off without hers might indicate an unplanned departure. Eh, she still have...

Re: Outsider 181: Foot-in-Mouth Disease

I note that Fireblade has gone on watch without her body armour (or at least without the outer layer). Not sure if this indicates she was in a hurry to leave the room or what. Their watch currently entails sitting in the dark cockpit, checking the instruments (mainly the comms systems for any inter...

Re: 177: What do you miss?

Don't remember where I read it but somewhere it was mentioned that humans have a 10° higher body temperature than the Loroi. That's a lot. Have you ever touched someone with a high fever? That's how Alex should feel to the ladies if they have a similarly sensitive temperature sense for their fellow...

"Is that sanitary?" "We don't ... *sigh*... care about that . " (<- that was actually my first thought) :? I think Jardin was gonna say we dont drink it from the teat. Re: 174-175: Got milk?

The fat can also come from plants, by heart I could name soy milk, almond milk and cocoa milk. Not sure whether anyone would want some plant based milk in their coffee or tea... Well, I personally switched to them for anything from coffee to oatmeals, because I have been diagnosed with insulin resi...

a neural interface isn't in an of itself monsterous The devil is in the details so to speak, especially in the long term. How much it'll cost to maintain the thing, including regular software patches (you don't want to get it ransomwared, so until you pay up, you'll only see the goatse.cx album, an...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

Meh, I don't think Loroi female hands look any significantly different from human female hands...with one exception... loroi females do not grow their nails long but keep them trimmed like most human males. Split nails in combat can be Very distracting ~ and painful! :) Eh, long nails are a cultura...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

At risk of reopening the “sanzai is faster than speaking” debate (TL;DR: it’s faster because the author has built it that way), a recent paper has shown that many human languages apparently come out at the same information speed. https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/09/human-speech-may-have-univers...

According to page 149 it was one of the emergency spares from the shuttle, so it's more than likely simply pilot caste colored by default.

Re: Page 159: Bedroom Eyes

I can see the collection of games on Alex's data pad getting used quite heavily. I'm not sure if the battery will last very long. However they do have plenty of other things from the Bellarmine and someone must have brought along a deck of cards, those don't require batteries at all. It should be i...

Re: Page 159: Bedroom Eyes

If I was going to be in a derelict, shut in a heated vacuum sealed toilet might well be the preferable way to go. You still die of starvation, but at least it's hygenic. not necessarily. It might take days to weeks to recover a stricken shuttle depending on the trajectory and the general situation ...

Re: Page 159: Bedroom Eyes

The toilet is at the other end of an unheated ship that's going to reach near freezing temperatures soon (tm). I don't envy them. I've been camping in subzero weather and it requires a lot of intestinal pressure to overcome the dread of a frozen run to the facilities. At least men don't necessarily...

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre

Quick question about the Historian A.I. constructs in general. Do they have individual occupational preferences? i.e. Would they prefer to be a diplomat instead of something lowly like a garbage disposal supervisor? This assumes that the same positions need constructs of the same capabilities and p...

Wait hold it if the Historians have been fucking exploring beyond the known space why aren't they fighting more openly? Re: Some Questions About Outsider Tech and Ship Mechanics.

Automated systems without the backup of living operators have limitations, and are especially dangerous when you consider the hacking ability of certain virtual personality constructs who are currently allied with the Loroi. I cant see how crew can do smething about it. If system is hacked and cont...

Re: Page 155: But hang on...

In 2019 (let alone 2160), it seems entirely possible that such a security flaw could have been put in on purpose by the manufacturer, which the Historians detected and exploited. Not necessarily. It's more like an attack surface the human designers are not aware of, of at least with human technolog...

Re: Page 155: But hang on...

If the Loroi have been stuck on practically the same hardware for centuries, their programming should be highly sophisticated. Just look at consoles and how games make better use of resources near the end of their lifespan. That might be true for consoles, which are single task systems (or at best ...
