Re: The Death Of The Heavy Scifi Battleship
Actually, given that armor is going the way of Battletech of all things (back in 2016, a metal foam composite displayed the abilities of the frame material EndoSteel(tm) to a T, giving credence to Battletech armor being actually effective), you'll probably see battleships as a thing. Think of it as ...

Re: Writing Prompts
The thing is, EVERYONE is going to get more authoritarian no matter what you do, largely because of the technological context. As technology advances, rights and freedoms fluctuate. Privacy might be a good thing in yesteryear, but the evolving context is making it a fail-deadly right... in the form ...

Re: How do you 'design' a ship in Outsider-verse
I would not be surprised if "real" space battles were effectively fought on a square grid because/if they were fought at extreme range. Eh, depends on various conditions, especially how large the target is, how speedy the projectiles are (for cannons/railguns/coilguns), how massive the projectiles ...

Re: How do you 'design' a ship in Outsider-verse
Eh, I think a lot of these design concepts suffer from the same sort of "we're going to be engaging targets in all directions" mindset that affected inter-war tank design in the the twenties and thirties and resulted in a lot of designs that were unwieldy, overly heavy, underarmored, and wholly uns...

Re: How do you 'design' a ship in Outsider-verse
Also as an artist, I have a great deal of interest in this! Normally I'd say have a look at the original Moo 2 sprites and design your aesthetics off of them, it's what I do!. Funny thing about that, I've asked around the harder-end of SciFi community and they agree that hexagons are the best shape...

Re: How do you 'design' a ship in Outsider-verse
Ok, I've buckled down on ship design, and well, I've been using GURPS to design things. It isn't the easiest of systems to start out with but it does have plenty of tools to make it fairly realistic. For example, for an Outsider/A New World (one of the settings I'm working on) fanfic, I have a corve...

Re: Writing Prompts
I have been a fan of the webcomic for years, loving the story and the universe. Arioch has weaved an interesting story that uses the various tropes as intended -like tools- and not as shortcuts. While we've been waiting for Outsider to continue despite the schedule slipping, I see that this universe...

Re: Building Your Interstellar Navy
Well you cant nuke ever planet to glass you need ground compliments. Although I have some designs like the over gunned Houston class cruiser that also functions like a submarine as you got to do a lot to find a foe in space. At the core, it heavily depends on what your technological context is. If ...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread
Crossposting from the Loroi thread: The fact that terran ships are restricted to hydrogen fuel doesn't meant that the loroi doesn't use it. I strongly suspect that they use this widely avalible and cheap fuel when able. As such I suspect that this is common on most civilian vessels not involved in ...

Re: Building Your Interstellar Navy
Its impressive I personally build mine on movement of troops and fleet actions So the Legends of the Galactic Heroes approach? My future history setting has the various space forces/navies starting out in all sorts of directions, but they (eventually) fall back onto naval conventions (heavily influ...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Good to know. Then again I keep in touch with various SciFi communities and you wouldn't believe the flame wars that asking what is the best propellant for a nuclear rocket would be. https://lolnein.com/comics/internetfight.gif Source: LOLNEIN Then again, given this also means how much propellant i...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
I'm not certain, but I think it might make sense if it's supercooled hydrogen and/or helium, which could help keep the taimat stable as well as be used as extra reaction mass. Good to know. Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Quick question Arioch, what sort of propellant does the Loroi use? From the looks of it in your comic, it looks like your average hydrogen propellant at immense thermal energies. If I somehow missed the answer, I must apologize for it. I'm not certain, but I think it might make sense if it's superc...

Re: Writing Prompts
Finally, someone other than me putting in some input :P The only reason that I'm not putting my prompts out is that I'm still working on quite a few mechanics on a personal setting that I've been working on. Then again, the setting has (compared to the Outsider setting) 1) armor worth a damn, 2) sh...
