They also stopped sending bomb-balooons to the US (a very cost-effective strategy) The bomb baloons caused only a handful of civilian casualties and no damage to infrastructure and the war effort. Hell with the censorship that went on the populace at large didn't even know about them, so they were ...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread
hi hi It is my understanding that the TCA is the sole military power in Terran space. At the tech levels of Outsider, the propulsion systems of just about any interstellar craft is going to make them weapons of mass destruction. Individual nations may not love the TCA, but I suspect they love the i...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread
Time for Outsider Terran Questions. Are all human nations TCA members? The insider entry implies that not everyone is in it. My understanding is that since the 'big boy confederations' are undoubtedly in it, the ones not in should be either very weak or not have anything of note in order to be 'pers...

Total Biscuit highly recommends it and calls it an ideal HD remake and how such remakes should be made.

Re: Literary suggestions for the bored
The lost fleet also gets my recommendation, it could be better but it gets a lot of things just right and the story is tense. The problem is that it has turned into a cash cow by its publisher, it's still good but the latest book had unnecessary levels of filler. The damned series is next on my back...

Problem accessing webpage
For at least three solid hours I had problems accessing both the forums and the webpage. I didn't get a 404 or other such message, just a site specific message that the server had dropped the connection or DNS errors.

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
I think he means that one side/character appears TOO good (too many virtues, too strong) AKA "authors favorite". I could be wrong tough. Partially correct, despite the semi-serious answer I gave a couple of weeks back, I like to play with other author's ideas on my head. It makes it easier to come ...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Author's Random Ramblings: Naming characters Naming character is personally the hardest thing when writing for me. :ugeek: It's hard, make no mistake, picking a name is probably the hardest part when you want to build a primary character, since a primary character is there to stay in the spotlight ...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
From a storytelling perceptive the Umiak are hard to nail down, it's hard to write them in a way to make them 'presentable' without twisting a few corners, because frankly they are an antithesis of human society. TL;DR : It's easier to write Loroi as friendly and Umiaks as baddies because we can im...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Author's Random Ramblings: Naming characters Usually I don't think much about the name I give to the characters I am writing, I just put a temporary name in and change it to something more fitting or 'catching' when I cleanup the story after the first draft is finished. In Fan Fiction cases this is ...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Chapter 1, Part 1 Jumping into an uncharted star system was always a risky endeavor, before even considering to do so, one must previously examine the star system from afar with long range telescopes in order to identify all of the planets that are part of that system. When those planets are identi...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread
Personally I think that what Heinlein mostly intended to do was to bash Communism in Starship Troopers than promote a heavily militarized citizen soldier society; something that he had to do at least once in order to avoid scrutiny by a certain witch hunting committee at the time. I also believe tha...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Magna Carta didn't consider that poor people or anyone without noble status could be a human. Even founding fathers of USA thought that human rights are only for themselves, for the white landowning men. Which also ties with human ego: the powerful human doesn't grant privileges to the weaker until...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Look a bit of asian cultures. Asian cultures seem to have a lot in common with Umiak, especially the Japanese and Korean propensity of self sacrifice for family and nation. One needs not to see further than the state sanctioned Kamikaze in WW2 for a very loud example but even behind such acts, prop...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
You know what occurred to me? I haven't really seen a story from the Umiak perspective. It's always the Loroi who end up with humans in this fan-fics (for obvious reasons). ;) From a storytelling perceptive the Umiak are hard to nail down, it's hard to write them in a way to make them 'presentable'...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
It might help with readability if you separated the dialogue and the narration using paragraphs like so: snip Doing this allows the readers eye to focus on a particular chunk of text, instead of being confronted by a hard to read wall of text where it becomes incredibly easy to lose your place. As ...

Ironically, the best was to win a total war is to target the population. and I don't mean in the "kill it", but "make life miserable for them". Destroy farms, food and water processing/manufacturing, infrastructure. That means your enemy now has to provide relief effort. Which means shipping in foo...
