Re: Size of 'empires'
The problems are the "living standards". You are living better and using more resources than movie star of the age of black and white. The luxuries are becoming norm and then necessities, but we don't need everything we have to live or even to be happy. Fix this and everything else would be "easy"....

Re: 14.12.1972
UK has recently established a proper space agency, though of course the funding leaves a lot to be desired. Britain is also part of ESA, which is a bit closer to a proper space programme. Skylon would be a glorious thing, a radical shift in how we go about orbital space travel. It would probably put...

Re: Size of 'empires'
I have an additional question : do the Loroi and others do a lot of terraforming? Or is it considered not cost-effective enough in most cases? Also, since the region of space where Outsider is taking place has been colonized many times before by various Precursor empires, are there many "leftover" p...

Re: 14.12.1972
Nah, full-private "moon safari". Unless the Chinese are actually serious about moving into space, but I think they'll have economic problems first. I doubt they're worse off economically than the Soviets were when they attempted to go for the Moon. There is a space race going on in Asia . So far it...

Re: 14.12.1972
The era of "Apollo-like" projects is gone, I am afraid. Unless China decides to challenge the US openly in this area, there won't be another like this. I am about 50% convinced that the first "settlement" on the Moon will be largely a commercial venture, most likely as part of a public-private partn...

Re: Size of 'empires'
Thanks, Arioch, very informative and interesting (*downloads maps for further study*). It seems that the Terrans still have some room to expand before they run into the big boys, if given the chance. It's only 3 times of the population today, which isn't hard to feed, if we could make some changes. ...

Size of 'empires'
I understand why we won't get a map (it's difficult to make a 2D representation of what is a 3D space, plus it would be an awful lot of work), but I have a few general questions: How big are the two respective 'empires' at war in terms of 1) size: in light-years, or a number of jumps it would take t...

Re: INTRODUCTION THREAD
I guess this thread needs bumping, so here I am ;) Hi :) So, my name is Victor, I live in the Czech Republic, I am a fan of hard sci-fi, but settle for less most of the time :) My interests range from sciences to history and politics, and I am still in the process of learning and studying English (i...
