Something else occurred to me. If humans can be trained to communicate psychically, they could, in theory, serve as crew on Loroi warships, I don't think any other species is able to do that. Not a huge gamechanger, but it might help make up for personnel losses.

Because in space acceleration isn't necessary for forward movement. Normally, to save fuel, I would assume you use acceleration as little as possible.

Decades, on the other hand, is too long. If the Umiak found human abilities interesting or useful, they would have invaded human space long ago. More subjects means faster research.
