Re: I sense something. Something I've not felt since...
Frankly... And what's stopping contact with the focusing crystal now, genius? Yes. You have been abrasive and demeaning to others without cause while arrogantly attacking both their intellect and knowledge. Really would prefer the thread not to be locked in an inevitable flame war. Is it the right p...

Re: I sense something. Something I've not felt since...
Is the Colbert Defense the best the claysaber has going for it? The focusing aperture and associated fiddly bits are just there for show? Even if it was designed as such and you could not slice off the guard why then intentionally mask it with material that would cover the hilt with molten slag? Bey...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN_CP4SuoTU nice Give the man a medal. Music wasnt bad, didn't think it fit, but the animation was incredible. Can't help but wonder how long it took him to cut all of that together. Loved all the references too. Hud and cockpit displays out of the games, briefing of...

Query, what do you think was the weakest scene of the weakest episode? Had to be the bridge scene with Luke and Leia right? Lets make a trailer featuring it!

Its not quite the classic homeworld
Pffft, its right on the bottom of the launcher. And, ya, I gave up on the remaster and went back to the real deal.

Re: Master of Orion 2 (and Space Strategy Games Discussion)
Perhaps they were too married to the idea of combined multiplayer? Or perhaps they simply didn't have the resources to see it through. It may not have been feasible to bring the old HW1 engine into the modern age without rebuilding it from the ground up. Using the tools and source code I imagine ma...

Re: Master of Orion 2 (and Space Strategy Games Discussion)
I am not certain the adaptive difficulty system is working correctly. Also captured two of two assault frigates attacking the cryo trays, but neither wound up under my control. I recall one frigate captured went to PLOT and subsequent captures went to your control, but it has been years. Also the re...

Re: The Loroi are Evil!
I'm inclined to think that the Loroi are evil as well as the Umiak, but only by their actions. Genocide of a sentient race or those with potential to become sentient is genocide, plain and simple. No morality adjustments are needed. Putting the survival of your species over the survival of another ...

Re: The Astronomy Thread
We've hit on relativity and dark matter a number of times on this forum, so I know we have a few people with the high level education needed to be able to poke holes in this. I just ran into some work that purports to solve both the expansion/collapse of the universe and the need for dark matter/ene...

Re: Speculation: What can Humaniti offer the Loroi?
The original plan was to have Ellen still tethered to Alex, and dead. Arioch figured that was a bit too macabre. At least thats how I recall it.

Re: Speculation: What can Humaniti offer the Loroi?
Well, the only reason I put it out there as a possibility is that some of my references are Cold War era. So yes its badly dated, but I know we had a habit of generalizing approximating and/or fabricating specifications for our hardware. I can't tell you how many books I have that list F-14/15 speed...

Re: Speculation: What can Humaniti offer the Loroi?
Depending on the reference I check I get figures from 89k tons to 105k tons for a Nimitz class carrier. I wonder if its differences rising from changes in the ships as they were built, refits and modernization, how they're measuring "loaded", or just faulty info.

Re: Speculation: What can Humaniti offer the Loroi?
nemo: remember here, ships are NOT cubes, at least if they are any good ships. Quite right. But getting exacting figures would require more precise information than we have available and several flavors of calculus. If you have that at hand, I'd love to see the exact numbers. The shape of the ships...

Re: Speculation: What can Humaniti offer the Loroi?
geo: might be some *shock* armoring involved. The Midway class actually had 6 inch armor belts that were removed in their 1980s refit to increase freeboard. And they're working on giving the Ford class shields rather than armor plating. Well, they call it "dynamic armor". Use of electromagnetic fie...

Re: Master of Orion 2 (and Space Strategy Games Discussion)
Wasn't impressed with the 960. They're cutting performance to save tdp/wattage. That makes some sense for a laptop gpu, but on a full desk top card I want the power. Maybe the 960ti will fill that void, or maybe I'll wait another generation and see. Haven't had a Radeon card in many years. Their dri...

Re: The Loroi are Evil!
A) I know the war has been going on for decades. But note that Arioch described it as 'a dark time' for the Loroi, when they were at their lowest. Suggesting that after that, they managed to get back on their feet, at least enough to force a stalemate. They needed to prevent the Umiak using the rou...

Re: The Loroi are Evil!
Scalpel method on a narrow strike like that would be more easily repaired than you think, Umiak keep surprising on that front, but lets grant it. You surmised "years". You forget the war has raged for "decades". To hold the line properly you would need to not only damage the facilities, but ensure t...
