Re: Page 120!
It could also be used to claim that Humanity is a variably-fractious species that goes through cycles of homogenization and heterogenization.

Re: Loroi writing
However, a change in words and language is different from a change in how characters are written. The shape and appearance of letters or characters is not something that will gradually occur once you have the ultimate standardization tool: the keyboard . Hand written languages may change with time ...

Re: Loroi writing
I think the key here is the fact that these varied scripts and linguistic changes happened prior to industrialization and any semblance of a modern interconnected world. As soon as you enter into a society that has some standardized education, or simply live under a government that enforces certain...

Re: Loroi writing
Some of the characters are a bit "verbose", but it doesn't look too bad. Every character looks like it can't be easily confused with the others, which is presumably intentional. Compare with not only 'b' and 'd', but also "I" and "l", which in some styles are indistinguishable, or 'Z' and 'N' which ...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
The main issue with technological advancement isn't the age of the 'old guard' but how open society itself is to innovation. Societies who frown upon innovation for a variety of reasons will suffer from either stagnation or extremely slow advancement. On the other hand societies who embrace and pro...

hi hi I do have to wonder about Tiamat storage. If I were transferring a substance that explodes if not kept at super cool temperatures, I would either store it in fuel cells/honeycombs that are removed entirely and replaced with fresh cells, or I would use an umbilical that never goes anywhere nea...

p.s. Pardon my English. p.p.s. And my punctuation (It's a little bit different in Russian) I just CAN'T WAIT for Beryl to start learning English spelling rules. I'm Russian (Belarussian actually, but it's practically the same thing) so here is how it was for me: - Wait, why do they have "C" that ma...

[snip] Probably and that means we will probably loose the teams newest additions, Talon and Spiral unless the Highlander get's an replacement crew to take it back to Tempest. one reason to do so could be for security. Perhaps Stillstorm wan't everyone that has been in contact with Alex of her ship....

If the Historians do have uploads, I expect that not only are they not the constructs, but that they very carefully keep the constructs from knowing about them. No chance of info leaks that way.

Don't worry, we've got our best man on the job. https://media.giphy.com/media/svb8tKSIpGfHq/source.gif Not only does he look like he's in on the joke without actually understanding it, if he was a bit more careful that thing could have looked like a chef's hat. Outstanding . Now I want to hear him ...

I think the Highland will only need to fit in the shuttle bay if it isn't going back to Tempest, which strikes me as unlikely. More likely it'll use a docking port of the appropriate size.
Edit: square-bracket key is giving me trouble.

Yes Jardin, yes you are. Also, if she sees the full alphabet she will doubtlessly quickly realize that "C" is useless and several letters need to exist.
Ah well, even the Mycenean Greeks dealt with that.

As far as I'm aware, the star itself being the cause has been ruled out. A star can only change brightness by changing size (which is far too slow) or by changing temperature (which is too slow and doesn't match spectral observations). A star that rapidly dims without major changes in its spectrum ...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
It is unwise to assume that the speed of learning in humans has to change with age: there are indications that it's not due to fundamental biological workings but instead due to additional channels interfering with the process. Further, there are indications that a significant part of the situation ...
