Re: Page 85
I think Stillstorm mistrusts him entirely because he's a disconcertingly Loroi-like alien (and telepathically unreadable on top of that), not due to any suspicion of him being an Umiak plant. She may be insulting humanity's prowess as warriors specifically because she's concerned that they will be ...

I always expect those mermaids with their mouths set in a "I'm shouting/yelling/screaming" position instead of the almost serene expressions on their face.

I like to give bold council.
Perhaps too bold, since my family doesn't live on the spot mentioned by the last name.

Re: Page 84
Winter Tide , together with the rest of the Van Squadron, had picket duty before being recalled to line up in front of the other squadrons. The nimbler ships of this squadron might have been better to intercept the first wave of assault (the Umiak torpedo launch) over the heavier ships elsewhere in...

Re: Page 84
Looks like the Torrai Torret of Torrent just lost at the very least a good friend. She kept an eye on Winter Tide throughout the battle. Was the commanding officer of Sirocco the most senior in Van Squadron after Winter Tide foundered? The first panel with those retreating Umiak is hilarious in a wa...

Re: page 83
And, of course, the Outsider tie-in here is that Germany accomplished this by attacking and occupying "neutral" nations: first Norway and Denmark, then Belgium and Holland. The Third Reich had no compunction about overrunning unsuspecting and ill-prepared countries to attain a strategic and/or tact...

Re: page 83
hmm missed this earlier. The issue is that you only have so much acceleration to spend. If you spend it decelerating within firing range you've increased the accuracy of guns pointed at you by a lot. The only counter point will be for those fairly small gunboats that need to get in to like 30 to 50...

Re: page 83
Similarly, Nelson abandoned the traditional battle line at Trafalgar and had his ships just charge the enemy line head-on, No, he used the "crossing the T"-manouver. And because of the sheer size of the enemy-fleet he sailed in two lines, with Collingwood leading the second divison. It was a variat...

Re: page 83
Guess that makes me a mediocre tactician. Does it? I don't think being an exceptional tactican has anything to do with inventing maneuvers that no one has thought of before. The Napoleons and Nelsons of history were successful not because they had trick tactics, but because they had a solid grasp o...

Re: page 83
As you point out, the Umiak force has built up substantial momentum that will carry them well past the Loroi formation and would take some 15 minutes or so to cancel out. The Umiak commander can choose to brake for another pass, or continue accelerating away from the Loroi to disengage. In either c...

Re: page 83
So... we have 2 group commanders who position their ships (or even their whole group?) for a pursuit on an enemy force that has at least a 20 minute acceleration headstart? Isn't that a bit pointless? Not to mention that afaik Stillstorm hasn't given a command to prepare for a pursuit. Are we lookin...

Next page should be simple: an expanding cloud of plasma where once those eight Umiak 'heavies' were... I'd say the Loroi barrage has a good chance to hit a few of those capital ships. Quite a bit less time to snag them out of space, and the Umiak have been accelerating dead on towards the Lor...
