[Fan Fiction]Calm Seas

Post by Suederwind »

Before you start reading this story, please keep in mind, that I am not an native English speaker, I never served in the military and I am sorry for every error I might have made. I got the idea for that story after reading the discussion about hyperspace jumps gone wrong and thinking about what might happen, if the Loroi would suddenly find earth.
The story is seperated into small chapters and I have currently written out two of them, that I will post here and if you like them, there will be more.

Edit: Changed a few things so the text is easier to read.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Part 1: Nelonoia

Just a few more solon till they had reached their jumpzone.

Another stepp on our way towards an alliance between Humans and Loroi."

The red haired Listel thought for herself. Her spoken name was Beitil (Antimony) and she was aboard the fast Union frigatte Nelonoia on their way to the human systems.
To call such a mission bold would be an understatement, as their chances of survival were slim and those to succed almost nonexistant. Suicide would be a much more fitting term. However, in the wake of the recent enemy offensive, there was no time to lose. The Loroi Union needed all the help they could get. Their mission was orderes by Torrai Lashret Stillstorm. She hadn't trusted the Mizol called Tempo aboard her commandship and thought that someone should check out the route and find out more about those strange aliens as well. The faster they would secure an alliance, the better. Recent losses of the enemy offensive were so severe that they had to take any assistance they might get from humaniti.

So Antimony had meet with her fellow Listel cast member Beryl aboard Tempest and learned as much from her, as she could. The language of those aliens was strange, as well as their behaviour. That they chose a male as an amassador was even stranger to her, but she had kept such thoughts to herself and still did so. To judge a whole species after just meeting one indivual was impossible, as she had to learn for herself after meeting some Barsam representatives on a science conference.

One of the downsides was that their mission was sheduled so quickly, that there was almost no time for much needed preperations. Among the few things they managed to get their hands on, was some additional food, water and a few spare parts, as well as enough fuel for the trip. There was no time to pic up additional Listel or Mizol cast members that are mandatory on such missions.

The commanding officer, Maialoi, was a young Soroin Mallas that was eager to get into a fight with the enemy. Maialoi had joked that they had left the system earlier than the human ambassador and his escort. That was true, as Antimony would much later find out.

At the moment they were already six jumps into their journey to that mysterious planet, that the humans called their home. A world they called "earth" or "terra". She knew that they had gotten a rough direction from the human ambassador on his way to the sector capital, before he had left the system they all had started their various jorneys in. But that wasn't really necessary as they found out a while later, as they got an even more precise one, from the Orgus navcomputer they found in the wreck of the alien ship. Miracoulusly it was almost intact and had received very little damage and Stillstorm had decided not to tell Tempo about this little surprise.

Jump Nr 7 layed straight ahead, just 10 solon to go, as the voice of the computer announced and was counting down:

9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1...

Normally a jump would hardly be felt at all. Some inexperienced crewsisters might feel a bit tired afterwards. For expirienced crewsisters it was so common, that they didn't even think about it.
But this time, it was different than usuall. Very different.
It felt as if some giant had catched the frigatte and was shacking it like crazy. Thosing it around like a baby would do with his unwanted toys. Before calming down again.

Close to Antimony, there was a sudden flash of light and she could hear the violent sound of explosions and metal streched beyond its breaking point. Then everything went black and became silent around her.
After what seemed like ages, she became consciouse again, as the ships Teidar Senzon, called Nomina (Gladius) woke her up by shaking her shoulder. Her grim face, framed by green hair looked at her from above:

"So, you are not dead... A pitty."
"Gladius? What happend? Are we under attack?"

She managed to send as a reply, as she tried to not think about the pain in her head.

"I am not sure. Now get up little Listel and let us head for the bridge to find out whats going on."

A sudden dizzyness strock Antimony, as she tried to stand up. She never had such problems after a jump before and a weired feeling filled her mind. Not headaches like she had known before, not the pain of a psionik attack, not like anything she knew and somehow she had trouble to recieve sanzais from any sisters that were furter away than the wide of a coridor, too. She could not sense anyone else of her crewsisters, except Teidar Gladius that was next to her.
Were they alone after what ever had happened? Were the other crewsisters dead? Unsure if it was the ship still shaking or her own body, she and Gladius were on their way to the bridge. Antimony had never met the Teidar before aboard Tempest, but she had seen her from afar, togehter with the infamous one called Fireblade. But as with all Teidars, it was better not to get them angry and so she tried to keep up with her as she raced down the corridors of the frigatte. Questions had to be answered later.

They passed heavily damaged rooms, stations that could be best described as molten and strange deformed objects that looked a bit like corpses. The courios Listel couldn't help, but she had to get closer to one of them and get a better look. What she saw there was beyoned her imagination and worst nightmares. It looked like parts of the unfortionate crewsister had fused with one of the stations. Large Parts of her flesh had become the same plastic material that such consoles were usually made of and large parts of the console looked like made of blue, loroilike flesh. Never had she seen somthing as horroble as this before. In shock she could only stare at the body, as suddenly wimpers of pain could be heard, coming from that supposed to be dead crewsister.

The strong gripp of Gladius on her left arm was the next thing she could feel, bringing her back from that nightmare to reality.

"We have to go! There is no time for this!"

Was what the angry Teidar telepathically yelled at her and Gladius dragged her away from the dying crewsister.
It took her a while to get over this shock. Yes, she was a warrior, but with 13 years, still very young, even if she was a senior officer. Nevertheless it embarrassed her that she was taken off guard by this in front of Gladius. Better to not show such a weakness in front of her again..
They needed some time to get to the bridge, as debris had blocked some coridors, others were simply no lomger there, but they managed to find a way around those blockades.

A mess was everything that was left from the bridge. Parts of the floor had vanished, sparkes and energy discharged from what once might have been consoles, cables or other objects into the room. The holografic viewscreen was gone as well and its shards seemed to have molten into the floor. Something that looked like a crystal made of loroi flesh and bones was now where the captains position should be. Antimony had no desire to check what it was, as the smell of burned hair, plastic, flesh and electronics filled the air of the bridge.

"Is there anyone here?"

The pain filled look on the face of the Taidar close to her, showed her, that she was not the only one affekted by whatever happened with the ship.

"Down here..."

Came a weak answer from one of the navigation consoles. It was Tenoin Narrat Rimil (Razor) who was lying on the floor. It wasn't easy for her to stand up and she was happy that Antimony came to her aid.

"Thank you."

She managed to sanzai, as an angry reply from the Taidar broke the silence:

"What happened with the ship, with us?"
"I just remember to initiate the jump... Something must have gone wrong."
"That might explain the signs of jumpsicknes we all seem to have. But if the jump has gone wrong, why are we not dead or our atoms dispersed over the next system? Various theories indicate that..."

Another sudden, grumpy sanzai from Gladius ended her outburst of knowledge:

"Can we skip the Listel academy part and start trying to find out what happened? Where we are and whats going on?"

The ship was suddenly starting to shake again and it almost threw the three Loroi off their feet. Anitmony looked at her and answered her question:

"You are right. I will check those consoles, maybe some of them and the sensors are still working and might give us some clues."

Having said that, she tried the few stations on the bridge that still looked like they could work, one after another and a while later, she found one that displayed at least some sensor data.

"That is odd... It seems like there is presure on the hull... increasing heat and indications of... Nitrogen and Oxygen? We are entering an atmosphere?!"

The other two looked at her in uther disbelieve and answered unisono:

"An atmosphere?"
"Yes. 78% Nitrogen, 21% oxygen. Similar to that on Deinar. No data from the optical sensors, those systems seem to be damaged and the backups are just... gone."

The face of Razor suddenly become even paler as it was before and panic could be felt within her sanzai.

"We have to leave this ship, as fast as we can. There is no other way we can survive this. Nelonoi or any other of our capital ships are not build to land on a planet!"

Gladius quickly replied to her:

"Then let us try to reach the hangar before it is too late."

Their conversation was cut short, as the well known, mechanical voice of the ships computer could be heard out of the speakers on the bridge.

"Attention! Temperaturen and pressure on the hull reaching critical levels. Change course immediatelly!"

Antimony could feel that panic started to rise in her, too. Like back in the days of her time on the Listel academy. Regardless of what the other cast might say, training there was hard and the competition to get on a frontline ship was very strong. The worst was the survivaltraining on Mezan: the endless deserts, air without oxygen and almost no food. Not always did things go well back then, but she had learned to keep such feelings under control and not let them control her. She would not allow the shadows of the past any control over her, this was not Mezan and there was no time for this.
Razor pushed the Listel, who seemed to be lost in her thoughts, away from the console. Somehow the short haired Tenoin managed to at least partially reactivate steering of the ship and its autopilot.

"I managed to change our decend vector, so we will not burn up in the atmosphere. Well... at least not now. This will just buy us some time and does not save us."

Razor explained, after a wave of relive could be felt coming from her.

"There is no time for happyness. Let us leave now."

Gladius stated while staring at the unfortunate Razor. After a frosty little moment they all left the bridge to the shuttlebay. On their way they felt the ship shacking as it fell through the atmosphere of whatever planet they had jumped into.
They meet some other survivors, not more than twenty, on their way down and as they reached the shuttle, they could see two other survivors apparently waiting for others. It was Mizol Lennai Daza (Lightning) and the Captains steward Soroi Paset Risot (Opal). The later looked pale, the Mizol had to help her stand and patches of dried blood could be seen all over their uniforms.
Lightnings sharp mental message hit them like a whiplash.

"She needs help! Now!"

Antimony quickly inspected her wounds, as the others were boarding the shuttle. It looked to her like parts of Opals arms had been broken multiple times, blood was sipping out of her uniform and the young Soroi tried her best not to let the Listel feel her pain as she touched her. However, there was little the red haired Listel could do for her crewsister, except give her some painkillers from her firstaid pack. That had to do for now. Togehter with the Mizol she helped her aboard and strapped her into a seat. Antimony just hoped that there was a Doranzar among the survivors that could help Opal, when they had managed to escape.
In that moment, the voice of the crippled ships computer announced something again, for the last time:

"Hullpressur and temperatur critical. Recommed immediate evacuation."

As the shuttles door was closed and its engines started to work, Antimon looked over her crewsisters. Just 25 survivors, many of them injured and no clue what had happend or where they are. Thoughts raced her mind: Was this some form of shell trap? Could they survive on that unknown planet? Had their mission failed?
She would soon find out as the shuttle slowly left the ship.
