I respectfully disagree. Operation Torch was a success not because of the sherman, but rather although. Key factors were air supremacy, supply and good intel from the local resistance (Slowikowski, "Agency Africa").
I think Fred is saying that the Sherman, while not really up to par for a frontline MBT at the time, it sufficed for the actions in North Africa; not that it excelled there, just that it was enough to get the job done in the context of the North Africa campaigns.
