Hmm... to answer Gudo's PM question publicly: No, there is no time limit on resolving this situation.

Senanthes: Gudo is right. You should probably post that in the IC thread. Not sure where you posted it before. PM to Gudo/sunphoenix?

Since I've been asked for background info via PM, I figured I might shed some light on things. Namely, I'll be pointing out two of the most important events of the Loroi-Umiak war.

The Silent Raid 2192-2193CE
Although the war is over, by now the details of the so-called Silent Raid remain highly classified. The Raid was a deep-strike into Umiak space and the first Human-Loroi joint operation that wasn't simply an ad-hoc combination of Loroi and Human warships fighting in the same system. A fleet of 20 human ships (including five tankers) and two Loroi ships, which provided the farseer support needed to evade enemy patrols.

None of the ships that participated in the Raid returned, and it was known from the beginning that it was a one-way mission. Regardless, the Silent Raid is believed to be the turning point of the war. Following the Raid, the Umiak halted all offensives and went into total defense for three years, until the Loroi crossed the Charred Steppes and established a beachead in Umiak Space. After the heavy Umiak losses sustained attempting (and failing) to prevent the beachead, the Umiak went on a desperate, last-ditch counteroffensive, which ultimately failed at Naam.

The Last Battle of Naam 2196CE
The Last Battle of Naam was the final major battle of the Umiak war, and the single largest battle of the entire war. Possibly even the largest battle in recorded history. The Historians did not share their historical archives of Soia-Era battles to confirm this. The massive Umiak fleet numbered in four hundred capital ships (heavy cruiser and larger), including a Type-TTK Superheavy.

The only Alliance fleet formations not present in the Last Battle of Naam were the Humans' Sol Reserve Fleet; Cry of the Wind with its' assigned escorts and the entirety of the Historian armada. The first two formations remained in reserve, prepared to make a last stand at Taben. The Historians, however, did break their isolation to contribute to the battle, as they intercepted and destroyed several groups of Umiak ships that were moving to reinforce the Umiak forces already at Naam.

The massive battle lasted for a total of five days. The Alliance forces suffered a 72% casualty rate, whereas the Umiak fleet was wiped out in its' entirety. The last two days of the battle were commanded by Rear Admiral Pire, as the higher-ranked Loroi commanders had gone down with their ships by that point. Prior to taking command of the battle, Pire was also credited with taking down the Type-TTK on the first day of the battle, preventing it from inflicting serious casualties on the Alliance forces. Official reports say that ECS-200 Mars fired a special-purpose torpedo at the TTK, however that is as elaborate as any explanation of the event gets.

Following the Battle of Naam, the remaining Alliance Forces pushed into Umiak Territory and encountered minimal resistance. Apparently, the Umiak had used the last of their reserves in their last-ditch offensive.

Classified spoiler stuff. If you want to keep wondering how the Silent Raid caused so much damage to the Umiak, don't read.
SpoilerShow
The munitions used during the Silent Raid were the human superweapon developed late in the war. The official label of the device was the "Mark 1 "Reaper" Supertorpedo. The torpedo was a purely kinetic weapon, weighing one kiloton. The working premise was, however, terrifyingly simple. It was, in essence, a drone starship with a deliberately "broken" jump drive. After reaching a safe distance from its' mothership, the torpedo would attempt a jump toward the nearest star.

With the jump engine "broken", however, 200-400 kilograms of the torpedo mass remained in real space, reached 90% light speed and crashed into, or through, anything that was in the line of fire between the torpedo's mothership, and the nearest star. The yield of a single torpedo ranged from 60 to 120 Gigajoules. Most of the torpedoes were used up during the Silent Raid, with 15 Umiak industrial planets being hit with two torpedoes. All torpedo motherships were destroyed by Umiak garrison forces, but even so, they all fired their torpedoes before being destroyed.

The Humans agreed to destroy their ability to produce the weapon after the war was over, but kept their remaining stockpile of torpedoes. The secret of "breaking" a jump drive the right way was never released to the Loroi, or any other Alliance race. If the humans really have followed through on their promise, they no longer have the secret themselves.

Post by TheUnforsaken »

Hi, TU here. With some (much appreciated :) ) help from Sunphoenix and Martenzo I've finished creating my first character. Since this is my first RP in this style it'll probably be my only character...for now.

As you will probably notice I created two skills of my own, if anybody does not want me to have this potential advantage then I'll be happy to use more standard skills.

Basic Info:

Full Name: Nathaniel Simeon Wolfe
Call Sign: Corsair
Rank: Major, TCA Navy OF-3
Race: Human
Gender: Male

Appearance:
HT 180cm (5'11"), WT 70KG (150lbs). Caucasian. Close cropped light-brown hair that looks much darker if he lets it grow out. Grey/blue eyes. A faint scar on his left cheek extends backwards into the hairline above his left ear, the result of an altercation as an adolescent. Nathaniel moves with a lithe grace, favoring deliberate, economical movements, however he can get figety when excited or bored.

Personality:
Given to introspection Nathaniel tends to be reserved around people with whom he is not close to. Considerably more at ease around friends and long-time aquaintances he is known to have an occasionally biting wit and sometimes lets his temper get the better of him, though he usually cools down rapidly afterward. He is intensely loyal to both friends and those he commands. Wolfe's ability to see problems from many points of view, coupled with a tendency to get right to the roots of any issues has defused many arguments and those who have served with him know that he can be a fair and impartial mediator in most situations.

Abilities/Skills:
A good leader and tactician. Skilled Pilot of many smallcraft, be they Heavy Fighters, Interceptors, or Shuttles. Also skilled at maintaining and repairing such craft, though those skills tend not to cross over to bigger ships. Able to hold his own in hand-to-hand combat...for a while. Nathaniel can combine that skill with Null- and Variable-Gee training to get the drop on opponents who do not share that training. Combining empathy with a persuasive argument, Wolfe can get sometimes disparate people to cooperate. Also has some programming ability. Determined to understand the Loroi better, Nathaniel made an effort to learn the Loroi version of the Trade Language with some success.

Skills:

General Skills -

Tactics (Aerospace) - 5

Total: 15 (20)

Martial Arts - 3
Zero-gravity Training (moving in freefall, low gravity and zero gravity) - 4

Empathy (understanding others and their intentions) - 3
Persuasion (making straight forward arguments) - 3

Computer Science/Software Engineering - 3

Total: 30
Abilities:
SpoilerShow
Good:
Quick reflexes
Mediator

Not-so-Good:
Bit of a Temper
Doesn't like to 'needlessly' risk the lives of those under his command. He may balk if ordered into a situation requires the deliberate sacrifice of his men, particularly if that order is issued by RADM Pire.
Important Events:
SpoilerShow
{Childhood} Lieutenant Tia Wolfe (Mother) killed in action.

{Adolescence} Having become the victim of a small group of other 'Army Brats' bullying, Nathaniel let's his volatile temper get the better of him and gets into an altercation. Rather outnumbered Nathaniel is soon overwhelmed, receiving the wound which marks his face to this day. The fight is broken up by another 'Army Brat' Darius Resnik, the two later become firm friends. From this point on Nathaniel makes great efforts to control his temper knowing that it may again put him in a situation he cannot extricate himself from.

{Adulthood} Sundering of the Wolfe family: Christian Wolfe, embittered by the loss of his mother early in life, reveals his hatred of the military. Javier and Jess Wolfe react strongly to this 'betrayal' and Nathaniel, refusing to take sides, ends up being shunned by all.

{Battle of Naam} Loss of ECS Invincible and 85% of the fighter group. Badly injured and one of just three survivors of the Invincible's fighter group Nathaniel becomes (privately) embittered at Gabriel Pire, seeing him as a glory hound willing to make a name for himself by shedding the blood of his subordinates.

{A New Beginning} Tired of endless, uneventful patrols, Nathaniel requests a transfer to the Tempest.
Relationships, Goals & Secrets:
SpoilerShow
{Family} Relations between Nathaniel and his father and sister are still strained, though they have thawed appreciably in the last few years. Christian still does not speak with Javier or Jess, though he and Nathaniel occasionally exchange E-mails.

{Association} Although military service has separated Nathaniel from Darius Resnik, the two remain close friends. Nathaniel acted as Darius' Best Man when he was married two years ago, and remains in close contact with the couple. Darius and Nathaniel have managed to play a series of Chess games by E-mail throughout the years despite the communications difficulty inherent in their service.

{Rival} Zora Kaylo. A recent arrival in Wolfe's life, one of three Lieutenants under his command aboard the Tempest, Zora is a ruthless young woman who will allow nothing and no-one to stand in her way. At first ingratiating, Zora quickly came to view Nathaniel as an obstacle rather than a rung in her march up the ladder.

{Secret} Dislike of RADM Pire.

{Goal} To find that spark of excitement he once felt at being a part of the TCA Navy. And perhaps to prevent another sacrifice to the altar of Pire's ego in the shape of yet another bloodbath.
In-Depth Info:
SpoilerShow
Timeline:

2160- Contact with Loroi

2165- Javier Wolfe is Invalided out of the TCA Marines following a training accident.

2166- Tia Martinez (later Wolfe) goes on indefinite leave in order to pursue a relationship with Javier.

2167- Jessica 'Jess' Wolfe is born

2169- Nathaniel Wolfe is born

2170- Christian Wolfe is born

2175- Tia Wolfe recalled to the military following heavy losses.

2176- Tia Wolfe KIA.

2187- Nathaniel Wolfe joins the TCA Navy

2187- Wolfe family rupture following Christian Wolfe's views against the military.

2193- Nathaniel Wolfe is promoted to Captain, assumes roll as 2IC of Light Carrier ECS Invincible fighter group.

2196- Battle of Naam. ECS Invincible is destroyed on the first day of battle in addition to 85% casualties among the fighter group.

Extended Bio:

{Major} Nathaniel Wolfe

Position: Cmd Interceptor Wing 2 - {Human} Major

Background: Born into a family with deep military roots, Nathaniel Wolfe broke with tradition to join the Navy instead of Ground Forces. When tests determined that he had higher than average reflexes and G-tolerances Nathaniel was fast-tracked into fighter training. In spite of issues with his family Nathaniel progressed well in the military and was promoted to Captain in 2193 becoming 2IC of the Fighter Group aboard the Light Carrier ECS Invincible. Following the loss of the Invincible and heavy losses among its fighter complement at the Battle of Naam, injured and having lost many friends, Nathaniel went through a period of depression and was removed from active duty for several weeks until he was deemed fit for service once more taking part in the mopping-up operations in the wake of Naam bloodbath. Although he retained his personal bravery, Nathaniel's combat record in engagements following the Battle of Naam showed a decreased willingness to risk the lives of those under his command. Privately, Major Nathaniel Wolfe has come to hold RADM Gabriel Pire responsible for the loss of the Invincible.
If I've stuffed anything up, or have just plain gotten something wrong, call me on it. As I said; this is my first time doing something like this so I could have done anything ;)

Needless to say, I look forward to getting stuck into this.

Your new skills are small craft operation and maintenance? Though I guess one could consider Aerospace tactics a new skill too :P I have no problem with your skill set, they're very reasonable and something one would expect to find aboard the Tempest. Your secret is a tad bit wussy though :P

I didn't mention it because it limits the character rather than giving a potential boost...this way its clear that he knows how to lead a group of fighters in space, and not necessarily how to lead troops on the ground.

"Sergeant! I want you to take that hill!"
"Which hill, Sir?"
Points, "That one."
"Sir, that's a Continental Siege Unit..."
"Then take that Continental Siege Unit, Sergeant!"
"Sir, that's our CSU..." Points, "The enemy is that way."
Turns around, "Oh."

But I digress ;)

As for my 'wussy' secret...I'm open to suggestions. This is the first character I've tried to build this way, frankly I'm surprised its gone down as well as it has.

Edit: Ok, I've been thinking about this problem with the secret. It occurs to me, from looking at other character's secrets, that the secret needs to not be just someting that the character would prefer people not to know, but something that would be damaging to the character and possibly others if it should be revealed. Seen in that light I can see why Wolfe's secret is rather wussy ;)

We've got sex/relationship and medical secrets so far...I guess he could have a problem with anti-depressants or stimulants but that's probably been done to death in multiple genres. He's not skilled enough at computer programming to be some sort of hacker and wouldn't be involved in illicit drugs either, it needs to be something personal. Some event from training or his first deployment perhaps? Something that got someone killed or seriously hurt and he's covered up? I'd have to tweak the 'major events' thing to include something like that...drop the 'family goes blooie' event.

Anyway, suggestions are welcome.

Edit 2: Drat this timing...Thanks Gudo, I honestly don't mind about the secret, I'll see what the others have to say and make a decision then.

Looking over my character sheet for options in this scene. Much to my dismay, I discover I've given Mord far to few social skills D: Thank God for ranks in deception! Martenzo: How do skill checks work? I think Mord is going to try a bluff.

Oh no, it's a fine secret :P Besides, it wouldn't be your secret if I chose it.

You people and your secrets hahah :P Oh by the way, you don't need to take a flaw if you choose to only have 1 ability. Either 1 ability or 2 abilities and flaw. Though if you want to play it "hard mode" I'd be fine with that :P I'm starting to think that with Mord's skill choice, I've accidentally wound up playing "hard mode" myself :P

I'd intended for it to be a shared scene, actually. Thought I did send you a copy as well, Martenzo, but I was probably mistaken in my state of after work mind XD. At any rate, I'll simply post Nel's reactions IC from here on.

Skills checks are fairly straightforward.
Roll 1d20+Skill. If you get X or higher, you succeed.
In this case, it is an opposed test, meaning you have to beat someone else's Empathy or Psychology.

Although, since this is more "cooperative storytelling" than "competitive game", it's entirely possible to just discuss the situation through in OOC and then letting someone make the "story" post. Much like it happened in the old RP.

Anyway, if you want to roll dice, do it on this site: http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/

Right, Major Wolfe is more or less complete...while I might be adding greater detail as time and inspiration permit, there won't be any significant alterations.

I don't know if I should have him involved in the current IC scene, he certainly wouldn't have anything meaningful to add to it. A sarcastic comment to himself about ground-pounders and pissing contests perhaps ;)

It would be nice if you'd have this competitive war-game finished, or at least planned, by the end of the month. This introductory chapter is meant to flesh out the internal conflicts in the Tempest crew. The establish everyone's, PC and NPC, personality.

Once that's complete, I can move on to the plot proper. I have plans.

LOL! You know Stormrage only interjected the idea of 'war games' as a distraction to - as she saw it to forestall any physical violence in the Mess hall between several human marines and the Loroi soldier. She actually had little interest in the 'War Games' herself ...she has nothing to prove. But being a loroi of her word she would propose the idea of the 'War Games' to her direct superior ...somewhat lack-lusterly at best but would not really push for it.

TheUnforsaken keeps asing excellent questions that are fun to answer.

The Human and Loroi fighter pilots work fairly closely together. Their craft are stored in the ship's bow hangar, while the landing shuttles and Basram Assault Tanks are stored in the aft hangar. In fact, the relationship between Human and Loroi fighter pilots is the second-friendliest group relationship aboard the entire ship. The friendliest being the fighter mechanics, who spend most of their time together in the hangar, maintaining your craft.

The Humans are using the Storm heavy fighter, which is based on the Loroi Lancer. The Loroi fighter wing, on the other hand, uses an upgraded Arrow with two additional weapon hardpoints and a Class I screen.

Storm
Class: Heavy Fighter
Length: 52 m
Crew: 1-2
Screens: Class II
Max. Acceleration: 30 G
Armor Rating: 12
Fuel Capacity: 300
ECM Rating: 67

Weapon Mounts
01 Pulse Cannon
06 Weapon Hardpoints
04 PD Laser turrets (requires turret operator)

Note: Storm is possibly the single most iconic spacecraft of the TCA fleet. It was developed late in the war and exemplifies the human focus on personal achievement. Initially, it was designed to be an updated variant of the aging Loroi Lancer, but influential armchair military "experts" got in on the project. As a result, the early Storm prototypes only barely (if at all) matched the old Lancer in its' original Interceptor and Point-Defense roles. Regardless, the invention of Titan-type fusion reactors made one single redeeming feature possible. Armed with a capship-grade pulse cannon, the Storm easily grabs the title for being the best anti-capship bomber.

Because of the Storm, the Colonial Navy eventually returned to their pre-contact carrier-based tactics, which turned out to be remarkably efficient against the Umiak, who lacked dedicated PD cannons on their ships. Over its' ten years in service, 102 capship kills have been credited to Storm squadrons, 40 of these in the Battle of Naam. Beating even the longest-lived Loroi fighter designs.

The only true weaknesses of the Storm are its' overall lack of acceleration and relative lack of maneuverability compared to true interceptors.

k...its 1/4 to 2 in the morning and my brain is mush...I have, however, managed to post my first bit in the IC thread. Sorry if it is a bit long, I had 6 or so people to run for that introductory post. Later ones should be a bit more concise.

Anyway, I'm off to bed, I'll fix any spelling errors tomorrow when I can see straight ;)
