[RP] Operation: Deep Strike (IC)

((hi hi

Here goes nothing! Crunchy details can stay in the OOC thread. If you've got questions out of character questions on what is happening, I can answer them there. If your character is asking someone in game a question, we can handle it here. If you like, you can start off with where your character is right now and what they're doing initially, and we'll go from there.))
------
Deep Space - Somewhere Near the Umiak Frontier - Day 71
The endless veil of stars is momentarily outshone by an intense flare of electromagnetic radiation as the ECS DeSoto tears a hole in the fabric of time and space. Moments later, a second flash marks the arrival of her partner ship some 3 light seconds away.

Onboard the DeSoto herself, the hard red glow of emergency lighting slowly fades into view along with a predictable wave of nausea, except for the Loroi, who by luck or design are not bothered by FTL travel. Although Doctors and Physicists alike claim that the effects are entirely psychological and that the jump process is instantaneous, it always feels like it takes longer than that.

Perhaps even less pleasant is the violent tremor that courses through the ship, growing in intensity and then subsiding over the course of several seconds. Bulkheads rattle and personal effects come tumbling down off of desks and countertops; a significantly stronger event than the last few jumps, when it was little more than a strange curiosity.

On the command deck, an unmistakable warning sounds in the form of the master alarm.

"Command, Sensor: Internals registering a strong vibration, but all systems reading normal."

-----
Elsewhere: After a few long, tense minutes the shipwide comms crackle to life, and from the other end comes a familiar voice, sweet and calm as though nothing was out of the ordinary.
"All hands, Secure from FTL stations. Set condition One-Initial, return to regular watch."

There is a brief pause before the comms open up again, this time it is a deeper voice with an air of concern and urgency.
"Attention: This is Captain MacRae. Engineering and Maintenance, I need a damage report on critical systems ASAP. All other departments, begin preliminary analysis of in-system targets to be ready in one hour. That is all."

{TCA Lieut.} Kamielle Lynn shakes his head at the DeSoto bridge Helm station, clearing the temporary nausea. He briefly runs his fingers through his shock white hair, his silvery eyes scanning the console lights for any warnings.

His voice is stable and serious, utterly calm, quickly performing a diagnostic on his console, "Helm Station reporting Captain... systems nominal. All drives read condition green, ...I'm reading a yellow flag on mooring vernier sections D through H - Starboard Dorsal section Sir. May be a faulty sensor return.
No returns on forward navigation scans Sir. Clear Skies..."

Like most of the bridge crew, Lieutenant Karl Jacobson takes a moment to clear his head from the jump nausea. Following the Captain's orders, Karl reports as his fingers are working "Sensors check green. No indication of damage. Passive scans show no unfriendly ships or obvious anomalies. Forwarding scan results to mission specialist. Active scan in progress, complete in twelve minutes, thirteen seconds."

In the shuttle bay taking a sip from his "remedy bottle" Wesley Shake look at all the various part that fell down from the workbench then his head.

after a long sight he say: Well at least they cant get lower than the ground. He then start to pick them up and put them back on the table it an unordered fashion

'Kam' pulls up the star system on the navigational display... TLRSS-J15426.U00342

Image

Turning in his chair to face Captain MacRae, "Course Heading Sir? From our down-slip we are on a course for the second outer System Gas Giant TLRSS-J15426.U00342 - IV and just shy of the system belt. We need a name that's easier to refer to this system... I calculate it would take only a little course adjustment to pull us into a orbital insertion and should give us some cover from sensor scans if there are hostiles in-system and further obfuscate our presence with the close proximity of the system asteroid belt. Though the Innalinzil will probably want to do a system patrol for hostiles. There could indeed be hostiles concealed in the belt!"

Donna Ptak orders her stomach to behave following the rough entry into n-space and then concentrates back on her displays, letting the data sink in as the initial reports wash over her. Making a note to ask the Engineering Department where the hell that vibration was coming from. Hyperspace transition is bad enough without the entire ship rattling around you too. Donna looks at the preliminary sensor returns; nothing leaps out at her, though the binary planet orbiting far from the ecliptic was interesting enough to draw her attention for a moment. Guess I'll just have to wait for the detailed scans like everyone else then. Donna blanks the scan display and brings up another showing crew staus reports, but looks away as Lieutenant Lynn speaks.

"Course Heading Sir? From our down-slip we are on a course for the second outer System Gas Giant TLRSS-J15426.U00342 - IV and just shy of the system belt. "Captain, whatever we choose to call the system, Lieutenant Lynn is correct, IV provides excellent cover. Although I would add that that cover could also conceal enemy ships from our sensors just as well. Until we get better sensor returns though, it seems like the best option: Advise we send out probes to IV if we do decide to enter orbit."

The captain takes a deep breath and spends several long seconds deep in thought.

"Understood. Keep us in freefall for now Lieutenant Lynn, we'll conduct a long range survey before we go charging in. I would like to believe the farseer when she says there's nobody home, but we're getting close to inhabited worlds and there might be something automated in-system."

The navigation panel lights up as the DeSoto begins recieving telemetry from the Innalinzil, indicating their position and projected course.
Image

Lieutenant Chu speaks up with just a hint of annoyance.
"Sir, I'm receiving a text message from the Innalinzil, she says: 'We're taking a closer look at those inner planets, you are free to navigate at your discretion. Just don't wander too far off.' Shall I reply?"

"Just acknowledge for now, then come with me. I would like to confer with our guest." Turning his attention to everyone present. "I will consider recommendations at the staff meeting... but yes, lets gather up the nominations from the crew and get this star's name picked out before then." Then, as he stands up to leave, "Commander Ptak, you have the conn."

-----
Terrabytes worth of sensor data begins streaming into the computer banks, much faster than the human eye can inspect. The computer does, however, start generating numerous flags to draw attention to unusual readings. The binary planets themselves are an oddity, one of which is displaying unusual topographical features. The inner planet has a peculiar ring formation that does not return the expected spectrum analysis results, and to compound matters, one of the moons orbiting the inner gas giant possesses a similar ring feature. Unusual spikes in x-ray emissions are present on the surface of a number of stellar bodies. Initial visual results indicates heavy impact activity in this system.

-----
Secure in its docking cradle, the drop shuttle seems to gotten through the FTL jump better than anything else on the ship. The unmistakable voice of Damage Control Chief Vance comes in over Wesley and Hadrid's commlinks. "Mr. Cowboy, Mr. Rox, I need you to take a walk outside and inspect the RCS, sections D through H. We've got some reports that there may have been some damage. I will be monitoring your progress. Be careful out there."

'Kam' nods, "Aye Captain. Setting our heading to parabolic path ready for emergency out-system jump. Maneuvering to station keeping Sir."

Kamielle works the helm console like a maestro and gently the the DeSoto turns an its center axis turning course change then verniers fire again bringing the DeSoto to station-keeping.

Pilot Skill Roll - 1d10 → [10] = (10) +4{Reflexes} +5{Skill} = Total 19

"Station keeping set Sir. Secure for general Quarters..."

Kamielle pushes back from the helm and stretches - fatigue from his long shift setting in.

Turning to Captain MacRae, "Staff meeting in 5 minutes Sir?"

Kamielle personal comm light up and A warm voice can be heard.Heya Kam! Ya heard the boss, am going out to check on his fancy toys i reckon you know the drill? Keep me informed of any change in velocity and incoming obstacle so we don't get hurt.

Earl then start to put on his space suite, then his personal thruster backpack. Seeing as Hadrid is still not here, obviously because he don't sleep in the shuttle like Earl do, he open up the ship wide comm. Hadrid we got one of those fancy thing with strange letter to inspect for the boss. sha'll i wait for ya or ya going to meet me in space?

While waiting for an answer he start inspecting the security cable attached to his suit then start to fill up a small tools box with general purpose tools and scanner

Kamielle picks up the private comm message from the Cowboy and sighs.

Kam replies silently typing a text message, "You suck! You get ALL the fun! I'm stuck here jockeying a lumbering target... You know I'm NOT letting you out of your shift chained to the helm of this heap! Maybe I'll get lucky and get to pilot one of the shuttles planet-side... so I can do some real piloting! Yeah... I'll try not to let you get scrapped off the hull! {Tone Joking}. It's likely only a faulty sensor and their only mooring verniers not our maneuvering thrusters. Anyways - Captain's called for a Staff meeting so, Ensign Collier will have the helm. Be kind - he's no barnstormer but even he should not be able to mess up 'station keeping'. Watch yourself out there - 'six-gun'!"

Kam signals from his console for his duty relief, Ensign Collier. On his arrival Kamielle salutes and surrenders his station.

Following the Captain MacRae from the bridge, "Sir, I think we really need to be concerned about out down-slip FTL Drive performance. Its obvious the Loroi do not care if we all end up dead... or worse if our drive goes out... I 'm not sure they'll not abandon us without a second thought. We really need to find out what is wrong ...fast."

Hadrid opened his comm (Westley's comm flared up with holographic screen of Hadrid in his armor) I heard the boss, cowboy... I'm on engineering deck, level 3, there is something wrong with main fueling centrifuge. He made a pause, looking around You know a drill...nobody goes outside alone.. I will be there in 5 minutes wait for me at airlock, Right? With that Hadrid shut his com down and plunged his pad in to console and begun downloading logs form last 24h. When finished he went strait to meeting point.

"Commander Ptak, you have the conn."

"Aye, sir. I have the conn." Commander Ptak rises from her console to sit in the Captain's seat while Lieutenant Lynn does his thing. Donna tunes out distractions while she transfers her console's displays to the Captain's console and begins to pour over the sensor reports.

Umm, wow. The Commander is stunned by what the sensors have detected and uses the comm to contact the Mission Specialist. "Lieutenant, I just looked at what the computers have flagged from the sensors," she pauses, lost for words. "Spectrum analysis is picking up alloys and composite materials, we've got activity all over the place, including x-ray emissions, and at least two ring systems which don't look natural. What is going on out there? More to the point who is going on out there? Does any of it match our records of the Umiak?"

Captain MacRae steps out into the hallway focused on his destination, though it is only a few feet from the bridge to the conference room. The door slides open effortlessly to an unoccupied room, furnished with little else but a long table and a video screen on the far wall. The captain signals with his hand for Kam to hold a moment as he tells Lieutenant Chu to track down the Loroi liaison officer, then turns his attention to the helmsman.

"Lieutenant, you are correct that the FTL drive is a concern. The Engineering department has been investigating it since the problem started, however the primary concern is the fusion drives. If they've been damaged, we could lose power at any moment. I know you're good, but if I can help it, I would rather you not need to keep the ship flying straight on an odd number of engines. With any luck, we'll have the next few days to figure out what is wrong before we need to jump back to the rest of the fleet.

As for our allies, I cant speak for their reliability, but our own support fleet wont leave us stranded."

-----
As the minutes pass by, a more detailed analysis returns positive hits on advanced material composites. High carbon compounds and complex metallic alloys, some of which match known Umiak spaceship materials. However, infrared shows a distinct lack of heat signatures. 89% probability that the material orbiting the inner planet and the 4th moon are debris fields. Whatever happened here, it seems to have happened some time ago.

Tired of waiting Wesley did the final check on his suit, air life support and telemetry were working at optimal capacity. A quick test ensured that his thruster backpack were also working properly. He then put his helmet on and activated the suite system. A small HUD (head up display) appeared for him to read all status of his suite and it relative position from the ship. Grabbing the tools box he then entered the Maintenance Airlock. Following standard security procedure he attached his security cable to the bar near the door then activated the decompression sequence. A warning light went on at the bridge console. Soon after the door opened taking a step outside Wesley would strap his other security cable to the hull security railing then remove the one tieing him to the door.

A comm channel were open between the suite and the bridge. Am going out for the RCS inspection see y'all soon he then activated his thruster to move out of the airlock.
All that could be heard on the comm was a loud: YEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAA!

Flying slowly at a few centimeter from the hull Wesley moved in the direction of section D

I knew IT!! Hadrid said, meeting empty airlock. Command, this is Ferox, I'm at airlock, leaving for RCS inspection.. He checked if his suit is hermetic and left the ship.

Reaching RCS system he saw Cowboy tinkering with it. What are you doing?

Kamielle sits at the staff meeting listening to the other staff leads make their reports, paying more than the usual attention to the engineering reports but saying little as the data is discussed and debated.

As the staff meeting comes to a close he chimes in,"...I expect we will be doing at some point a scout landing on at least one of the binary terrestrial words - 'The Twin Rogues'. I'll get the shuttles prepped for the landing, and the gear the scouting team will need."

With the close of the meeting Kam will make his way down to the shuttle hangers and begin running systems, equipment and stores checks on the shuttles pre-flighting them for use.

The local star -itself a brilliant dot the size of a penny- casts a dim orange light on the ship's hull. From the outside the DeSoto's condition is that much more tangible than the cold numbers and graphs of the damage control readouts. The surface of the ship shows slight but visible signs of warping and metal fatigue. In several places along the path to the reaction control assembly, distinct rippling along the outer armor can be seen, though at first glance there appears to be no ruptures or stress fractures. The ridges seem to spiral outward from the aft of the ship in a clockwise fashion, as though the entire ship had been twisted back and fourth. The RCS assembly itself shows some signs of damage, and at the very least is bent out of proper alignment by as much as 5 degrees.

Over the commlink comes the deep baritone voice of the second shift communications officer. "Confirmed airlock departure." then in a whisper, "Hey, Cowboy! What're you doin? You wanna get your rear chewed out again?"
------
((Sunphoenix, I've got some plans for the staff meeting. I can start it up now if you like and then we can just hold onto that thought for just a little bit longer.))

One hour passes by quickly and crew from all over the ship make their way to the staff meeting, some arriving ahead of time to find a good spot, others come rushing in at the last second. The senior staff's mess room is small. Built for 10 people to sit around a table with reasonable comfort, it is currently packed well beyond capacity as the department heads and their immediate support staff crowd around the table, lean up against the wall and squeeze in a seat upon the countertops. As the clock strikes the top of the hour, Captain MacRae motions for the assembly to quiet.

"I've already heard some of the news. I think we all know this isn't going to be any ordinary run, but before we get down to business, lets hear the nominations for this star's new name. I hear the good folks down in medical have already taken to calling it Podunk, but lets stick to tradition and make this official. I'd like to be able to refer to this star in four syllables or less if I can help it."

Everyone has heard the joke before, but some of the tension in the room is eased all the same.

((hi hi

If anyone wants to interject, just let me know and I can squeeze stuff in the middle))

"Hmm, Podunk, Twin Rogues, and Nyrath's Star..." Captain MacRae waits for about 30 seconds until the pitter patter of people tapping on datapads dies down. "Twin Rogues it is, a fine choice. Now that we've gotten the formalities out of the way, it is time to get down to business. We have a lot of space to cover, but we're not going to take the usual systematic approach. Our first priority is to investigate possible threats, then if safety levels permit, we can move on to identifying potential resources. Gupton, start us off with your threat analysis if you please."

"Yessir. It is my recommendation that we stick as close as possible to the operational zone of the Pure Wind. Although she is climbing ahead of us at max acceleration, we should minimize our rendezvous time as much as possible in the event of an attack. We are presently unable to scan the starward side of Twin Rogues I, and given the presence of a debris field, I am concerned that by the time we are close enough to detect a threat, we will be unable to escape the way we came. We may be able to jump to one of the other neighboring systems if pressed, but we do not yet have sufficient data on the viability of those jump corridors. Securing the outer planets does mean we will need to do a lot of backtracking later, as I hear the inner planets have the analysis teams most excited.

The Captain nods his head the looks over towards Lieutenant Chu. "Any indications of hostile transmissions?"

"Oh, umm... Nosir, nothing specific anyway I mean. There's a lot of background radiation which is kind of unusual, but nothing with any pattern or direction to it. We are, uh close enough to start picking up radio transmissions from the Umiak core worlds, but you know, they're decades old now and the signal is very faint. I mean, nothing in system that I've detected sir."

"Good news none the less. Vance, I know you've been busy with the damage inspections, but I need an update on the Geo-analysis."

"Ensign Salehi has been heading up that project, sir."

"Yes Sir! We have some information that we think you will find very interesting. Ensign Durando was the first one to spot the phenomenon, so he should get the credit for it. Ali?"

A short dark haired man squeezed in between two other crewmen in the corner raises his head and nods in acknowledgment.

"Anyway, as I was saying, we first saw the phenomenon on the Icy Twin, as you can see from this photograph."

The monitor on the side of the wall lights up to reveal a blurry over magnified image of what looks like peaks on a mountain range, capped in ice and surrounded by clouds below. Next to the image is a series of waveforms with esoteric markings scattered about.

"There are some interesting impact craters in this region, that I believe might be signs of orbital bombardment."

There is a curt cough that comes from the direction of Ensign Durando.

"...but, as my colleague points out, opinions differ on that matter. There does seem to be a lot of meteor activity in this system but I think the grouping patterns suggest..."

Captain MacRae waves his hand to interrupt. "Please back up a moment to the phenomenon you were telling us about."

"Oh, right. Sorry, anyway... We pinged the area heavily with active and it looks like there are some 90º angles down there somewhere, which as I'm sure you know is a pretty good sign of artificial structures. And they seem to be scattered all over that area. But thats just the half of it! When we started looking at the outer moons, we found some similar looking structure patterns on a couple of them. Now, we're too far away to be sure, and we haven't had time to get any results from the active scans, but we think there is a good chance there might be artificial structures on two or more moons."

"Lieutenant Commander Gupton, any chance that these are active structures?"

"I don't think so Sir, we've detected no abnormal heat signatures from any of them. No indications of any significant active power sources. Though from this distance, I don't think we'd be able to detect, say, a nine volt battery or something of that nature.

"Fair enough. Environmental, any readings on habitability?"

Nelson Gautreau brings up a new image on the wall display and clears his throat before speaking, his accent betraying a Martian upbringing, "The innermost planet has an unusual atmospheric mix, with high levels of noble gases and various halogen compounds which would indicate a higher than usual level of halogen elements with have since reacted and become stable. The atmosphere is quite thin, however, and temperature variance between the day- and night-side of the planet is large. Temperature at the poles is tolerable...barely, but pressure is low and the air is unbreathable without apparatus. Windy too." Changing the image again Nelson continues, "Of the Twin Rogues only one planet has an atmosphere, that's the ice-ball we were looking at before. High levels of nitrogen, with some oxygen and carbon-dioxide thrown in, as well as trace amounts of other elements." Again the image on the display changes, showing several moons orbiting the system's gas giants, "Three moons orbiting the gas giants have significant atmospheres. Two, orbiting the inner gas giant, have atmospheres as a consequence of tidal forces, both have liquid water on the surface, however, one of them is within the gas giant's radiation belt. The other is extremely active, geologically speaking, and it's atmopheric makeup reflects that. The moon orbiting outer gas giant that has an atmosphere is frigid, consisting primarily of nitrogen. There's also enough oxygen to keep you alive for a short time, though you may wish it didn't."
