Agreed Greyhome - although it looks like our little ensign is a bit of a Captain Kirk in his ability to generate respect from his teachers. Still, I like it. It gives a bit of background that was sorely missing about what it is that was known before sending out Humanity to this new test of an intergalactic universe where Humans are not alone.

As an aside, how awesome is it that Outsider is still being steadily worked on with very very little change in style and output by one guy, steady work seems to produce steady output, whereas others (Heroes Inc.,Jump Leads & Purgatory Tower for example) are picked up, put down, picked up, walked away from, the creative process seems to be very hard on the participants. Steady as she goes with real life coming first seems erratic, but actually gives results.

So, I guess what you're saying is that nobody could've survived that?

Could be it. but he would have need to be pursued by someone who actually wanted him dead for a long time.

He just a target of opportunity. being here at the wrong time. My guess is that he really dead. unless those 8 missing crew member were all on the bridge and the loroi just didnt bother to go to the most interresting part of the ship.

I could say: nothing human could survive that. Simply because unless they can put an space suite (that dont seem to be on the bridge) in less than a second. they are dead Jim!

especially the two against him, what do you have to do to get one, let alone two letters recommending you don't go on mission?

Capt. Hamilton:
"Slavery is a temporary condition, but annihilation is permanent. Are you willing to risk that?
Ensign Jardin:
"Hypothetically, Yes. I am."
Capt. Hamilton:
"Good. This mission is not about taking the safe choice"

He seems to suggest that there is a safe choice, while it seems like there isn't one - any choice leads to at least one technologically superior super-power with the means and inclination to commit genocide to be pissed at humanity. I felt like the question was out of place, as hypothetically, with no additional knowledge, there's no reason to prefer the Umiak over the Loroi for safety's sake, unless there's additional information available to humanity at this point that I'm not aware of.

The information humanity has (as shown by the exposition at the begining:
Umiak:
* Are insectoid.
* Has occupied and mistreated the Orgus, while they were seeking neutrality.
* Pretty much enslave their allies (new info on this page)

Loroi:
* Are Mysterious and Telepathic.
* Have commited genocide of at least 2 races.

So the choice seems rather obvious: having the Umiak as enemies is just as bad as having the Loroi as enemies, but nobody likes insects...

I do understand the Orgus alot better now, as clinging to neutrality in the face of Umiak threats must have been motivated by Umiak demands that violate the Orgus' self-rule, to the point that it can be considered slavery. I'd be interested in knowing more about the relation between the Umiak and their subjugated races.

well, the umiak enslave most races not joining them, while the Loroi have destroyed two races that did not join them, this says two things to me: One, the Umiak ether lack the ability or the will to destroy an entire race and Two the Loroi have both the ability and will to destroy not one but two entire races. With that in mind who would you be friends with? Because don't forget if the war goes bad for the Umiak then those slaves of their might see an opportunity for a rebellion, forcing the Umiak to fight on two fronts

Tending to siding with an unknown quantity like the Loroi based solely on the way the Umiak abuse their 'allies' is not a safe choice. Far from it. It shows a proclivity to die on ones feet rather than live on ones knees, which does mention victory or extinction. And that seems to be the character of good Hamilton here.
