Aw... Shit...

SpoilerShow
Not entirely unexpected, unfortunately, but still sad.

Still, this page raises the question in my mind of exactly how frequent a ship going critical (in the delayed post-damage fashion seen here, where minutes pass from "hit" to "boom") is in the Outsider-verse. Winter Tide being lost in combat I expected, but the manner of it's passing I did not see coming (in that it was a delayed reaction).

man the damage didn't look that bad and all from the first hit. I guess that means loroi ships aren't as durable as I first though. But still it doesn't seem fair the damage looked survivable.

now that the first attack was only a probe ( but it demonstrate clearly the Umiak mass formation and throw away culture). make me wonder if Still storm is going to pull out of the sector

Spoilers? Seriously if you click on the Page thread without reading first you deserve what you get.

@Wintermute

The amount of energy contained in an average ship is enormous, I would expect that death by breached reactor/magazine is a common occurrence only made uncommon by the time it took for the Winter Tide

She'd better, though we haven't seen the Wave-Loom yet so I'm betting we aren't leaving yet.

I'm not sure, lost the ability to far-see, alraed survived two major attacks, lost two other strike fleets, unknown how many enemy's are left. might be reaching critical energy levels ( IE in order to fight).

@ Arioch

nice tweaks to the main homepage, much more easily to get into the comic :)

Ugh... I just got it.

That starboard fusion chamber, man... That starboard fusion chamber. Never the port fusion chamber, always the starboard.

Looks like the Torrai Torret of Torrent just lost at the very least a good friend. She kept an eye on Winter Tide throughout the battle.
Was the commanding officer of Sirocco the most senior in Van Squadron after Winter Tide foundered?

The first panel with those retreating Umiak is hilarious in a way. The Loroi seem to try hitting the heavy vessel in the center of the formation, but only the flankers get creamed. :)

Well balls.

At this rate Alex is never going to get the chance to see the Loroi's giant laser beam's beutiful hue. Or teach Beryl english for that matter.

hi hi

What a page... I don't know how to explain it, but I think the Umiak ships look even cooler from behind.

The expression on that pilot's face made me want to give her a great big hug. (I don't know if she has a name, but if not, I'm calling her dellar.) Her captain refused to give up, but judging from their expressions I think they must have both known that it was a long shot.

I'm pretty sure that isn't the explosion from a fusion reactor. Fusion reactors wouldn't go critical in the same way that a fission reactor might. I'm guessing it was a runaway reaction in whatever kind of exotic fuel the Loroi use which is kind of like anti-matter but more stable. (though clearly not completely stable) I'm pretty sure the Loroi use a more advanced power source than the Terrans do.

Maybe it is her youthful short hair, her sharper features, or her expressive brow, but I get the feeling that Arclight is perhaps less jaded than her peers Ashrain and Moonglow. I admit that I'm extra nervous now that Arclight is on the front line.

Man, I've been throughly beaten to the breach in starboard fusion chamber stuff. (For the uninitiated, in the game Homeworld 2 "breach in starboard fusion chamber" is a line that plays when a capital ship reaches critically low health. If you've played the game much, you probably heard that line way too many times.)

I would like to say, since I haven't mentioned it before, that I'm throughly impressed by the Umiak ship design in general. They're all very striking.

I agree. The explosion from Winter Tide is very similar to the detonation of the Loroi torpedoes, and since Loroi torpedoes use antimatter as their fuel/explosive...

"Breach in the starboard fusion chamber" is a Homeworld reference; it's one of the ship chatter audio options that plays right before a ship blows up.

I actually wasn't thinking of that at the time, but it's true that it's always the starboard side that's mentioned. The word "port" can't compare with a sexy word like "starboard."

Yeah.

Her hair style is way too cool for me to not get attached. Hopefully this won't be a mistake on my part. Oh dear. :?

Does anyone else think it was dumb to put the Escort Cruiser out front in Van Squadron in the first place? According to Arioch's Insider article, CLE type ships don't carry any pulse beam cannons, so they can't defend themselves against heavier opponents. IMO, the Winter Tide should have been held back to cover the Center squadron.
