CENTURY old? try thousands of years old, please note plural.
javcs: sizing issues aside, sovereign-class is a command and control flagship, with many other functions, defiant is for all intents and purposes an over sized torpedo boat, or for that matter perhaps more closely resembles a pocket battleship, but that still does not add up exactly....i'll even give you that two defiants vs a single sovereign would probably be closer to equal....but that is still only something like 1/10th of the crew and somewhere close to that in production cost.
and my argument is that defiant is the first dedicated warship, not that it is the most powerful vessel in starfleet.
edit:
NCC-1701, self destructed in "ST 3: the search for spock" after forty years of service.
NCC-1701-A decommisioned after only 7 years of service.
NCC-1701-B 2329 – Lost (presumed destroyed) after the crew reports contracting an unknown infection. 36 years of service.
NCC-1701-C blown up fighting klingons in 2344
NCC-1701-D was destroyed during the Battle of Veridian III in 2371(8 years of service)
NCC-1701-E not dead yet.

Akira Class Battlecruiser/Carrier anyone?Absalom wrote:Don't be ridiculous, the Federation doesn't have warships, just engineers . Also, making Star Trek aliens fight those strikes me as mean (consider: 'carpet bombing' an enemy starship with photon torpedoes).
Edit: Though, thinking about it, the Klingons might be impressed: "Your great-great-great-great-grandfather flew this into battle and it still works?" Tourism would be inevitable.

true, but the Borg incursion brought forth more military (-like) designs. The Akira class is small for a warship ( in ST terms) but a note from history is a good note: in the US they built around 800-1200 destroyer escorts ( lighter destroyers that were easily to build) in comparison to 400-600 full destroyers because the need was their. Beside Federation ships are more multi-purpose ( at stated multiple time in this post). Star Fleet has combat ships but their not a priority (until war occurs).
besides I like the NX-01 inspired shape to the ship ( or is it the other way around NX-01 was inspire by Akira)
edit:
akira: well named and good character reference ( unless thier another meaning to Akira as a japanese name ?)

1701-A was renamed and renumbered as being the Enterprise. Before that, it had been named the USS Yorktown - don't remember the number.discord wrote:CENTURY old? try thousands of years old, please note plural.

Anyways, Defiant was the first dedicated warship that we saw, yes. However, it cannot have been the first dedicated warship in Starfleet's history - SF has been in several wars in the past, especially in its earlier days, IE, the first Romulan War era, and the early, early days of the UFP and the pre-UFP Earth Starfleet, I believe had some 'dedicated' warships, relatively speaking, on account of their limited technological capabilities and resources, preventing the effective 'generalist' designs that we saw from being viable as the near-exclusive defensive and offensive force. In fact, I believe some of the ESF ships we saw in the later seasons of Enterprise were more or less dedicated warship designs.
The Akira-class isn't that small in ST terms. Admittedly, not the size of a Galaxy or Sovereign, but bigger than an Intrepid.
The US build all those damn destroyer escorts in WW2 because of politics, and then had to get rid of nearly all of the ones that were left after the war because they couldn't do what the Navy needed them to do.

Yeah, and didn't that particular Enterprise refit have a "Warp 13" velocity or something like it?

Re: The Aircraft Image Posting Contest
hmm My guess may be wrong, but weren't the destroyer escorts the slow ones they mixed into the convoys across the Atlantic to provide a deterrent to German subs? While the real destroyers (the fast ones) were tasked with the job of trying to hunt them down and were far less numerous.
Given earlier in the war the germans could literally surface in the middle of a merchant fleet and use their deck gun to tear them to pieces because not every convoy actually had destroyers within them, they served their purpose, even if they were second class warships.

Re: The Aircraft Image Posting Contest
There was also one in the Pacific that started a 'fist fight' with a Japanese battleship. If I remember right, it lasted for something like 30 or 45 minutes. Which is just completely surreal.
Re: The Aircraft Image Posting Contest
That particular Enterprise wasn't a refit. It was an alternate reality/timeline version. Although, at the moment I can't remember which alternate reality/timeline it was - that is, whether it was one of the recurring ones, or a one-off.GeoModder wrote:Yeah, and didn't that particular Enterprise refit have a "Warp 13" velocity or something like it?
@Absalom - wasn't that because the destroyer got too close to the Japanese battleship? That is, didn't the destroyer get close enough in where the battleship could depress her main battery enough to fire on the destroyer? Or was that a different incident?
Either way, that was one incredibly ballsy destroyer captain.

That Enterprise was a refit in one of 3 alternate time lines in the last episode "All good things", Picard was pulled between the 3 time lines 1 before the first episode one at the time line of the last ep and one in the future where "Admiral" William Riker upgraded it with things like cloaking devices and the Warp 13 engines, it wasn't untill Voyager that they decided that it was impossible to go past warp 10 using conventional meansjavcs wrote:That particular Enterprise wasn't a refit. Although destroyer escorts lacked the arms, armor and speed to attack fast armored cruisers and battleships, at the Battle off Samar, the task group Taffy 3 of escort carriers, destroyers and destroyer escorts were attacked by superior Japanese fleet led by the giant battleship Yamato. The Butler-class destroyer escort ship Samuel B. Roberts of became known as "the destroyer escort that fought like a battleship" as it inflicted damage from torpedoes and gunfire on much larger cruisers, using the tactic steer for the splashes as that way everytime the Japanese adjusted their aim they actually moved their aim away from where the D&DE would be
The other destroyers inspired by the Samuel B. Roberts made attack runs using the same/similar tactics
Re: The Aircraft Image Posting Contest
I actually got modified into a proper battelship. No more civilians, more armor, more shields, more everything. And the Phaser cannon. Gotta love the phaser cannon.uthilian wrote: That Enterprise was a refit in one of 3 alternate time lines in the last episode "All good things", Picard was pulled between the 3 time lines 1 before the first episode one at the time line of the last ep and one in the future where "Admiral" William Riker upgraded it with things like cloaking devices and the Warp 13 engines, it wasn't untill Voyager that they decided that it was impossible to go past warp 10 using conventional means
I took out a Negh'Var is seconds, and scared the other one away. It was apprently still the flagship, which means a helluva loot of oomph.
Re: The Aircraft Image Posting Contest
Well that makes it more of a specced up Qship really. Since there's probably military designs which will act different. Take the defiant and just how much more compact it is, compared to other vessels with the same output of dps.TrashMan wrote:I actually got modified into a proper battelship. Re: The Aircraft Image Posting Contest
when it stated that you cant go above warp 10 at it represent infinit speedGeoModder wrote:Yeah, and didn't that particular Enterprise refit have a "Warp 13" velocity or something like it?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warp_drive_%28Star_Trek%29
for The Next Generation it was decided that these would no longer be featured. A new warp scale was drawn up, with warp factor 10 set as an unattainable maximum. [...] Normal maximum warp in the original series was warp 8In the alternative future depicted in "All Good Things..." (the final episode of the Star Trek:TNG), Federation starships travel at warp 13, although this is most likely due to a likely restructuring of the warp scale, perhaps putting warp 15 at representing infinite velocity.
Re: The Aircraft Image Posting Contest
Yeah ... there are a handful of different warp speed scales. The TOS scale was nominally exponential, the TNG scale is ... nominally logarithmic, I think.Karst45 wrote:when it stated that you cant go above warp 10 at it represent infinit speedGeoModder wrote:Yeah, and didn't that particular Enterprise refit have a "Warp 13" velocity or something like it?

I think that was a particularly ... unwise decision - redoing the warp speed scale is one thing, but redoing it and painting yourself into a corner with it while you're doing so?
Re: The Aircraft Image Posting Contest
Meh, nothing a time warp cant solve!
Re: The Aircraft Image Posting Contest
Heh ... at one point, one of the TOS Enterprises had a "time warp" drive - somehow different from a regular warp drive.Karst45 wrote:Meh, nothing a time warp cant solve!
My understanding was that the "time warp" drive emulated remained sublight, but also shoved the ship back in time, such that it was effectively FTL. Clearly, the concept got dropped fairly quickly.
