We trudge ever forward,
The brightness of our future,
Outshone by the glories of our past.

We salute you, Mr. Armstrong,
Entire generations look to you,
With awe, reverence and respect.

Your achievement shines now in our past,
And as the embers of your life fade,
We can only hope to strive ever forward,
And meet with you in the ever distant utopia.

----

RIP Neil.

To hell with Mars. I vote that Neil Armstrong be declared the patron saint of space exploration, so that his remains may be considered holy relics.

"that's one small step for 'a' man, one giant leap for mankind"

Truer words were never spoken, I have no doubt that he'll be remembered the next time the U.S sends a man to the moon.

Armstrong is a figurehead and his distorted announcement from the Lunar surface marks a stage in mankinds growth - "to land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth". As his family have said, "The next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink". That gets to me, almost as much as the fact that we've lost the ability to go back.

Please, can we leave the whole mess of religion, icons and holy relics behind on the Earth when we leave, not carry it into space. It's divisive and leads only to conflict - any faith-based social structure is too vulnerable to misuse by the power-hungry .

I have this photo, taken by the Mars Odessy thermal imager in 2001 when it was 2 million miles out, as one of my desktop wallpaper images.

Look how far we went!

Sadly, you can't take tendency to faith away from human being. You take away gods, religions and holy symbols, but they are only replaced by other ones. It's almost scary, that even the most brilliant minds of our race are as superstitious that any else. Just ask, if you could sit in seat number 13 in your next flight?

Faith's going to continue. If we're going to have new gods someday, we might as well make good ones.

You forgot Arioch...

In all seriousness I think we can all agree that it is "preaching to chore" when we discuss God, religion, ect, so if we must do it, then let us make a new thread and keep this one to remember a great man who had greatness thrust upon him.

Definitely an unpleasant surprise when I woke up to that particular headline...

Still, he was, still is, one of my role models. Seeing what he accomplished was a major reason why I got into math and science. Even if I never got into space myself, I at least wanted to have a hand in humanity's climb.

Godspeed, Neil.

Do you want to know something random?

I learned this bit of news from this very forum.

My first action immediately afterwards was to check CNN, and yup, it's confirmed. Still...to have a major news story broken for me by this forum...

Yeah.

Yeah.
I actually found out via DuckDuckGo. The banner was a duck in a space helmet and the rollover text was the announcement.
