Outsider music score edition

Post by Sweforce »

When making movies two of the tools are story boards and placeholder music. The idea her is to consider the comic as a storyboard for a movie and then suggest music for it. It is common for movies to be scored with placeholder music, if nothing else to give a hired composer a hint of what kind of stuff one have in mind and sometimes the placeholder is so good that it is even used in the finalized movie.

The goal: suggest a music score for a page or several, just a few panels or even something you think would do well as the main score of the whole movie, if the comic was a story boards for a movie that is. So, rady to start producing "outsider" the movie?

Hypothetical Credits: Brothers in Arms

That's just checking some of the songs I've got in my playlists. I'll need to sit down and do proper research to try and fit music to Outsider. I could've sworn I've done it before at some point, because I've got playlists named "Humanity" "Loroi" "Umiak" and "Other", but Youtube has since butchered the playlists by deleting most of the vids.

That annoys me too, especially since they won't tell you what is gone...

Make sure you keep records of the tunes names and composer/band and not just a bunch of links so you can find them again with a search. Myself I use Spotify, I am now listening at "brothers in arms" as Razor one suggested. First Northern light's version then Dire Straits.

And if some of you should happen to BE a composer and have your own suggestion to post, then please do so. Hey, I play a lot of Skyrim and the modding community there got their own composers nowadays, as I guess for other games so it is not out of the question.

Im reading through with all these suggestions and I have got to say it helps with ambiance immensely. I am struck with the thought that Ensign Jardin is extremely expressive. Arioch does good work with expressions.

The digerodoo, short of banging rocks together is probably humanity's oldest musical instrument, a strike of genius. Also very appropriate, maybe it is the sound of the Naam system? Compare to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzeJq3CbiZM

I'd imagine some stuff from the Backdraft soundtrack, at least.

And/or maybe the Apollo 13 one.

Also the System Shock 2 soundtrack, especially the Command deck tracks.

Also also the Dune soundtrack.

sweforce: probably the first and last time ever used in a full orchestral concert, and yes stellar shadows always was haunting....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g21O8LMTD0 <----- the original in game music.
Personal favorite is below the asteroids, can't come up with a suitable scene for it, but damn I like it... Both the original and orchestral, strangely enough I think the original might actually be the better choices in this case, compare yourself.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWmGNRoGLhc&t=0h25m45s <---- orchestral.

carl: damn, system shock 2, the only game that ever scared me, it's spooky man. but I think it might be too mind buggery.....wait a minute... might actually work, command 3 seems decent for our hero sitting in his cell fiddling with food, going absolutely bonkers(solitary confinement will do that to you.) at very low volume mind you.
engineering was always one of my favorites.

Razor One Hmm I get the impression that you want to contract Thomas Bergersen, the Norwegian behind Two Steps From Hell to write the score for Outsider the movie. Nothing wrong with that, I am a fan to.

When I originally wrote that list up I was on a Two Steps from Hell binge. If I did the list nowadays it'd probably be a bit different, and since the idea is to storyboard BGM for an adaptation, whether live action or more likely a Yamato 2199 style anime, the selections would absolutely have to be different.

For the most part, it seems that I selected the songs based on the perspective. For instance, the Humans selection is likely what the humans think of themselves from a musical standpoint, ditto for the Loroi, ditto again for the Umiak.

I'll be digging around The Tubes for some other selections. For now, listening to what others picked. :)

Fireblade - Audiomachine - Red Warrior : I had this vision of Fireblade sleeping in her quarters tormented by nightmares, the mask she wear during daytime mask have fallen of and we get to see the true face of PTSD. She refuse to let anyone near her and so she suffers night after night.

The Human Lotai - Two Steps From Hell - Dark Harbor : Imagine that you suffer from a fear of the dark and you just got looked up in a pitch black room. For a loroi this is what a human soul is like. Nightmarefuel.

Umiak War Machine - Two Steps From Hell - Moving Mountains: Absolute steamroller. They just keep coming. Zergrush.

Been mulling over things for a bit, and I think it's really actually really hard to do a musical score for the comic as is. The comic is structured to specifically exclude the viewer from alternate viewpoints and narrows things down to Alex's perspective, which works great in a comic but is going to leave viewers bewildered and confused.

If the goal is a score for a show that is in a Yamato 2199 anime style, which Arioch has mentioned would be the ideal form of animation for the comic, then we have to accept that the viewer will have a wider perspective than the characters and will be given a look at events beyond the scope covered in the comic.

It'll also depend on the tone that either Arioch or the director of his choice would go with. I went with No Time For Caution for pages 74 - 84 since it depicts the struggle and eventual victory of war, which kinda works with those panels, but there are other scores that could work, such as La Busqueda De Lanna if you wanted a supremely heroic theme, while a more struggle orientated theme would be Dusty Universe, which would fit the Naam system quite nicely and so would be fairly atmospheric too.

So... yeah. Overall, I think it may be better to go with thematic and atmospheric music generally, rather than for specific music for specific scenes. Some bits and pieces this would work, the battle of Naam for instance is one where all the major perspectives are brought together so no problem there, but Alex alone in his cell probably wouldn't work. For the rest, we'll likely have to invent a few scenes to accommodate a different format.

One idea I had was that while Alex was in his cell alternately eating, puking, and having PTSD nightmares, the crew of the Tempest was having a series of funerals or whatever it is that Loroi do to honour the dead set to One Day In August by Marc Teichert. It has the right feeling of melancholy without being depressing and you could probably fit in a few shots of the various crew members both mourning the dead and looking at each other meaningfully interspersed with a shot of Alex moping in his cell.
