What is the "Well of Souls Stellar Remnant"

Post by Durabys »

This came up in the Insider databank: http://well-of-souls.com/outsider/loroi_timeline.html
Date (CE)______Date (SYU)
1415__________803_____Mannadi aggression against Neridi and Pipolsid.
1427-1441_____820-840__First Mannadi War. Little is resolved because of spacetime instability.
1436-1451___833-854__Hyperspace instability caused by gravitational tides from Well of Souls stellar remnant makes jump drive unreliable.
1495-1507_____917-934__Second Mannadi War. Loroi annex substantial territory; Mannadi sue for peace.
1548-1552_____992-998__Third Mannadi War. Started by Loroi; Arekka join Mannadi side in 1550, but Loroi conquer
______________________Mannadi territory in 1552, and organized Mannadi resistance ends. The Arekka fight on alone,
______________________attempting to support Mannadi insurgents.

I too found that excerpt strange. Is it the galactic center? The Cygnus X-1 black hole?

It's either a large stellar mass black hole that started nomming, or two neutron stars merging. Presumably gravitational waves are to Jump Drives and hyperspace the same way that earthquakes and their resultant tsunami's are on Earth.

Well of Souls is a massive object (presumably a stellar remnant) located at the edge of the Pleiades bubble, spinward of Historian territory. It is named after a location in Barsam religious mythology.

Image

It is thought to be a black hole, but because it has no detectable companions, its mass can only be roughly estimated. This uncertainly makes it a hazard to nearby jump travel, since jump calculations must use "best guess" estimates, effectively making it a barrier to safe travel within a certain distance of the system. The entire region is an area of higher-density interstellar medium, gas clouds and massive star clusters, effectively forming the boundary of the Local Bubble.

At times the object becomes active, presumably consuming dust in the system, and there is briefly visible an x-ray accretion disk and gamma ray jets; during one such phase starting in 1436, it became a source of intense gravitational waves, which are an additional hazard to jump travel over a wider area.

How wide an area?

Would another 1436 event bring the Umiak-Loroi war to an inconclusive end/decades-long stalemate by reason of making hyperspace travel so unreliable that simply maintaining a stellar empire is a struggle, and prosecuting warfare effectively impossible?

The Insider mentions an inconclusive First Loroi-Mannadi War due to the Well of Souls becoming 'active'. And the Seren/Maiad sectors seem closer to the Well of Souls then former Mannadi territory, so it looks like it causing hyperspace instability would bring the Umiak assaults to a standstill in those sectors.

It would depend on the severity of the disturbance.

It would certainly put things on hold.

So let me put things into perspective:

That thing is 'allegedly' a Black Hole. I emphasize the 'allegedly'.

And in the past it had stopped the Loroi from running over their opposition..preventing them from becoming even more powerful.

Strangely, the Historians are not mentioned as having problems with Jump travel..even though it is basically in their own territory!

Also, even more strangely..real gravity waves from an Nom-Nom-ing Singularity (the thing that could be at the current tech level of the Loroi be seen as the cause of Jump Instability) spread at the Speed of Light..while the FTL Jump Instability effect of whatever this thing is spreads instantaneously in a multi-hundred Light Year radius..like if they were not gravity waves but some kind of Hyperspace Interdictor field instead.

I smell a rotten Historian fish here.

Whatever that thing is it is definitely NOT a Black Hole and is probably Soia-Liron in origin..and is being controlled by the Historians or their aquatic servant race.

They are probably also responsible for blowing up the Bellarmine with one of theirs Phased Plasma Focus..which has a green hue per semi-canon.

I highlighted the map. NOTE: Grey color lines are Jump Borders of the local bubble. Arrows point the location of the Well of Souls.

Not that Arioch would tell if it were true, but maybe that's where Humanity can make a difference in the conflict. Maybe our jump drives are immune or less disrupted by the Well of Souls, and it's about to go active! Or, more boringly, maybe our system just provides a route around to places far enough away from it. I guess either way, it makes no real difference as either side could still just crush us and take either the territory or the technology. Unless our immunity to telepathy is somehow intertwined with the Well.. OK, now I am just getting silly. And wanting the story to progress!! New Year, new page?

Hmm, if that thing triggered again, the Umiak look like they'd have more trouble than the Loroi.

At any rate, I doubt that it'll come up. Probably it'll always be mostly-fluff, unless a dreadstar shows up (phenomenally unlikely).

What if the Well of Souls is a currently stationary Dreadstar that has its Hyperspace Interdictor Field generators being occasionally activated..which results in the Jump Instability events.

Then I'd suspect it's more of an over-engineered paint-job applied to a stellar black hole than a conventional ship. Achieving meaningful effect strengths over that range will unavoidably be expensive, even if you are pulsing.
