hi hi

I am still making the finishing touches on the system I'm planning on using for stats and such, but it will be a relatively simple system using a number of d6 equal to the character's skill/ability rating, with modifiers for gear and such. For now, I'll post some background information on the mission, the ships and crew to hopefully get people's creative ideas growing.

I am making a lot of this up as I go, so please bear with me. :oops:

Class: Short-Range Scout

Named after a famous starship captain from the very early years of FTL travel who completed two successful missions in extra-solar space before being lost in a miss-jump. She was widely remembered for her honesty and dedication. The ship's emblem is a blue diamond.

The DeSoto was commissioned as part of the new Terran/Loroi strategy, it lacks many of the features and amenities of the larger Bennet class, which is nearly twice as large. As a result the DeSoto is significantly less self-sufficient and must stay closer to its refueling tanker, however this is consistent with the current strategy. She has a pair of point defense lasers which should theoretically be effective against some Umaik torpedos, however their main purpose is utility; i.e. vaporizing space debris. Without any truly effective weapons in the Terran arsenal, it was decided more efficient to simply go without. A stout drop shuttle (think lunar lander with a fusion engine) can allow a survey team of four to land and blast off from a planet of up to 2.5Gs, and the ship carries a series of automated probes that are primarily used to confirm important mineral deposits.

The DeSoto's crew consists of 54 humans and one Loroi liaison officer (Mizol Sanzet). The TCA has struggled to find experienced officers for the command crew and most of the crew is fresh out of the academy.

Captain Frederick MacRae
Nationality: British
Career History: Bachelors in Chemistry, Masters in Organic Chemistry, 3 years as civilian consultant on deep space survey mission, commissioned by TCA for command training, served 7 years aboard ECS-099 Pacific.

Captain MacRae tries to present himself as being approachable, often soliciting advice from the bridge staff during meetings. However, he is careful to follow his orders and expects his subordinates to do the same regardless. On two occasions, he has been heard arguing with the Loroi liaison, though only due to the thin walls of his office.

Mission Briefing (Terran)
Ladies and gentlemen, we find ourselves in a precarious situation. We must prove to our new allies that we are worth keeping alive, and to do that we're going to have to take some risks. The Loroi are watching us carefully so we've got to make a good impression.

Your mission is to explore and survey the star systems between the Terran Colonies and Umiak controlled space, and if possible, identify any routes through which an attack force could travel.

A small detachment of Loroi strike craft will join several of our own warships in defending our supply vessels and dealing with any targets of opportunity that may arise. This is a time critical mission, so we will be limiting our search pattern to high priority systems only. Scout teams will travel in groups of two and report back to the command fleet in within no more than 144 hours. Once all scout teams have returned, we will determine the optimal destination and move the entire fleet forward.

Scout teams: Your mission is to survey your assigned systems, locate any indications of alien civilization -hostile or otherwise, identify candidates for military outposts and take accurate readings of potential jump lanes.

Formerly a frigate, the Innalinzil was heavily damaged in combat and was in the process of being tugged away to be scrapped when the order came in to divert to Terran space. She went along with several other crippled vessels (minus the sensitive parts of course) as part of a "grand gift" to the Loroi's new but technologically backwards ally. Using a little bit of Terran ingenuity, a couple of the larger wrecks were disassembled and used in repairs and for study. In this way, the Innalinzil was reborn a completely different ship. To the Terrans, she is a testament to their ingenuity, but to many of the Loroi crew, it is a shameful bastardization. Just outside the command center hangs the tattered remains of a tapestry who's image is almost entirely obscured.

Much of the Innalinzil's original weaponry is no longer intact, however, her standard shuttles have been replaced by a pair of Poii class light interceptors for defense. Because her engines were repaired with Terran technology, they are only able to operate at half power without risk of melting the internal components. Still at 17 Gs, she could fly circles around even the fastest Terran vessel.

With the exception of a few added specialists -mostly diplomatic-, her crew is comprised of the same crew that was aboard when she was on the front lines. All of the original crew come from one of two childhood bands, the leader of one is the Captain, the leader of the second is second in command. Every one of the original crew knows the others very well by now. The Innalinzil originally had a crew complement of 85, so it goes without saying that she is operating with a skeleton crew now.

Soroin Torret - Ronzas Perrzir (Red Salt)
Redsalt was once a proud and daring captain who was know by her band mates for her fearlessness. Defeat has been a burden she has not carried well. She clearly resents her current assigned duties and feels that her crew and the spirits of those who died under her command in addition to herself are being denied the opportunity to absolve their shame. She carries a bitterness in her sanzai that; if it gets on your nerves, has done so long ago. She has final authority over the Innalinzil and the DeSoto, though she tends to leave the Terrans to their own devices, she is known to be unresponsive to suggestions from Captain MacRae.

Redsalt hasn't bothered to discuss the specifics of her mission with anyone but the Mizol operatives on board. The most she has said is that they are to assist the Terrans in exploring possible avenues of attack and make sure they don't try to make an alliance the the Umiak or anything.

So... as a human Kamielle would be one of the pilots and not a combat pilot at that? How many pilot positions are there and are there any human combat pilot positions?

Humans don't really use fighters... but there is going to be at least one pilot for each of the three shifts on the DeSoto and more than one pilot for the drop shuttle. During an alert, the senior crew is likely to take over if they were not already on duty. There is going to be a lot of overlap in ability onboard, so you shouldn't hesitate to take more than one job. Cross training in areas outside your specialty is a good way to pass time while in deep space after all.

If you are trying to think of what your character is good at, hopefully those job lists will give you some direction. Another thing to consider is what subjects they were good at when they were in training/school.

I don't mind if you bring over Lillasoni at all, from what I remember anyway she should fit right in.

LOL! Ok. I 'd think 'Kam' would be fairly frustrated then... considering he's a combat pilot ace to be assigned to fly 'tin-can target' shuttles with no means to strike back effectively - a scouting 'shoot us!' mission! LOL! That will be interesting to RP his frustrations and envy of the Loroi pilots! :)

If people would please:
1) Once the games gets going, move discussion about the RP in the RP discussion thread. That doesn't mean you can't post notes and the like. Just try to keep long, out of character things clear of the thread once it gets going.
2) Assign your character a unique text color, and have them speak in that color.
3) Either post your character here, or provide a link to them. (example with proper spoiler usage.)
4) Make use of the spoiler tag where appropriate. It's great for hiding away boring rolls/stats/non-plot things.

I'm kinda a veteran of forum RPs, and these simple rules really help the readability of the game.

I'll finish my character as soon as I have time, then edit this post.

hey I have rather interesting character on the back-burner, but to make full use of Him I think He'd need to be placed in a fairly high position with the security force on the Maria DeSoto (cool name by the way) Number two would work best. A position without too much power real but at least a few people that are supposed to listen to him and if at all possible a commanding officer to struggle against. I can post further detail but i wanted to run this by you first seeing as I'm a pretty new member to this forum.
Also I'd like to use this color if thats cool <-- Edit (Decided on a new color)

Hadrid was born in 14/12/2137 along with his twin sister Samantha(he is older by 20 minutes) in a small town 'Faragat' on Aldea. From birth he was raised in an atmosphere of equality and respect. His father firstly flag officer and later captain of ECS-102 Pellew, despite the obligations tried to spend with his children all his spare time. Hadrid grew normally and quickly became an independent taking over some household chores and the constant care of his sister.
In 2156 he graduated from the prestigious secondary technical school, showing great skill and promising prepositions. His plans were temporarily halted by mandatory military service, where he spent single year in Marines corps. After the return, seeing no future in a small town he submitted ​​the papers on STM academy. Shortly after recruitment he got on the list of first 10, while his sister was already studying at local medical university.
During those years Hadrid showed high physical and mental efficiencies, passing the stages without much toil. Thanks to an helpful and good nature, he earned the respect and friendship of both his peers and leading staff. In 2160 he finished his first degree in "Spaceship's mechanical and electrotechnical systems" and was promoted to 2Lt Cmdr with recommendation to continue studying in "Tactical Analysis" faculty. However he refused and asked to be transferred to active duty for unknown reason. Hadrid quickly found him self aboard ECS-096 Cydonia as second engineer and proofed him self very useful aboard.

While there has never been a mutiny aboard a TCA vessel, tradition allows for officers to carry a sidearm. Recent dealings with alien races have renewed interest in the tradition. The standard sidearm of the TCA is an 11.5 mm pistol with an 8 round magazine.

Hadrid bought this gun in an old junk shop. The very weapon is XXI century Kel-tac "RFB rifle" and was in miserable state and if no nights spent in the workshop, it would be suitable only as an exhibit on the wall. Finishing work, Hadrid once again proved his mechanical abilities. The rifle itself is almost 170 years representative of human firearms masterpiece. To customize this gun to newer standards Hadrid done heavy lathe\milling work, exchanging old steel parts with new titanium\tungsten copies, changing chamber to fill with 8.6x51mm [Lapua Magnum, very popular old design hunting round]. To endure so powerful load the barrel was replaced with high-pressure military barrel with 'whistle' flash hider. Men who had contact with this weapon describe it as high reliable, frightfully loud gun.

Westley "cowboy" Earl. Texan Shuttle pilot, mechanic and distiller.

Westley teached the way of spacer at an early age. Moving from ship to ship helping his father he became quite familiar with them. Even at an early age, he was so skilled with spacecraft operation that he was assigned a freight shuttle on board the USG Ishimura (yeah i know shut up :D) Stacking money he would soon buy an old used shuttle. Not space worthy he would use that shuttle as an airplane for planetary commerce.

Taking job from there to here, he was hoping to raise enough fund to fully repair his shuttle. Unfortunately one of his contract lead him in more trouble than he hoped for when, one day, he was required to pick up a "special" passenger. Some TCA agent needed to transfer a prisoner from the planet to a ship. He was to sneak to the ship with his passenger while standard transport TCA shuttle would be used as decoys.

But someone had informed the Prisoner friend because, as he reached the landing zone, gunshot were exchanged between the TCA and a criminal gang. Never giving up on a contract he dashed toward the landing zone using the airflow of his thruster to shove down the criminal gang, giving him enough time to recover his "package". It seem that he wasn't the only one dedicated to his contract.
The criminal called some reinforcement forcing Earl to dodge his way toward his delivery point and like a cowboy riding a bull, he was able to last long enough for TCA security to intercept the criminal.

But you already know this, it made local news. Wesley was even supposed to received a medal for his "Dedicated Service to the Terran colony" but never showed to the ceremony, probably sitting at his favorite table sipping some whiskey.

A few year later the TCA required his service once again, they wanted someone who could adapt to ANY situation. He didn't ask for that much money, only asked not to be bothered about his hat, a shuttle, and a warm place to sleep and that what was put on the contract.

His skill alone outweigh it lay-back attitude that is on the edge of insubordination, causing constant headache to his superior.

Background

Born on Earth, Karl had a happy childhood, despite the circumstances. Both his parents were career officers in the Scout Corps and Karl was mostly raised by his grandfater, a retired military officer. The Jacobson family had been in the military for five generations, with Karl being the sixth. Despite what was expected of him, Karl never had much interest in the military. He always had a knack for reading people and their emotions. His parents hoped he would at least put his abilities to use in some intelligence agency, but ultimately, it did not come as a surprise when he chose to study psychology instead of enlisting anywhere. For this decision, he became the black sheep of his family, as his two younger siblings did pursue a military career. After a particularly heated argument with his father, Karl simply left and chose not to keep in touch with his family.

Cut off from his family, he spent his way struggling through university while working at the same time. His life got considerably more interesting after formal contact was established with the Loroi, however. He took initiative and managed to become an exchange student on Taben. He studied a variety of topics there, most of which did not stick. Formally, he learned nothing about psychology on Taben. Psychology was not taught as an independent field of study, only as a part of the medical education, for which he did not qualify. Nonetheless he hept a detailed diary on his interactions with the Loroi society and used it to write a comprehensive doctorate thesis on Loroi culture and psychology. Then he got bad news from his family.

His father's file was released to the family and they found out he had been dead for some time. Johann Jacobson had been the captain of one of the scout vessels sent out to make contact with the Loroi or Umiak. The ship's remains had been discovered by a Loroi scout ship and reported to the TCA, which prompted the release of the files. After a depressing family reunion, Karl thought about his life choices and his family for several days until he decided to drop his studies for a doctorate and enlist. This was a fairly unusual decision, as Karl had previously been perparing to publish his doctorate thesis in two months. His thesis was never officially published, but his most coherent draft and his diaries were anonymously published into the public domain, causing quite a stir in the xenopsychological circles. Despite its' questionable origins, the study remains a baseline for analyzing Loroi psychology. Mostly because noone else has yet been able to publish an equally comprehensive study.

In the military, Karl kept (and still keeps) quiet about his achievements in psychology and became a sensor operator.

I'm not really sure how the point buy works for the 128-point section. Does that mean buying up to rank 5 costs 15 points?

Yes... you are correct a skill rank of 5 is 15points. Look at Kamielle's skill selection as an example.

I seem to have made a mistake in posting some things before I was ready. I should clarify what I am aiming for in this campaign: most of my experiences on the Outsider forums have been discussing hypothetical situations at length. The story that I have made is an attempt to create a hypothetical situation that everyone involved will need to work through as it progresses. (though there will be some explosions and fighting, there will hopefully be more to the story than that.) I am drawing heavily from Insider here, as I am taking at least an equal dose of hard sci-fi with my space opera.

That being said, I realize that 128 points might be insufficient and I'll look into the possibility of increasing it. However, I should point out that the Terran Scout Corps is recruiting skilled people from an academy or experienced spacers, so some people should be having a lot more points in formal training.

I will be using the following as a guideline for gauging a character's expertise versus a difficulty level when adding attribute + skill.

• 0: Completely unskilled.
• 1: Very rudimentary skill.
• 2: Basic operator's proficiency (civilian driver's license)
• 3: Hands-on experience or minor professional training.
• 4: Basic professional certification. (police driving, army rifle certified)
• 5: Experience from professional-level work, some advanced training
• 6: Expert skill (starship pilot, marksman) -this is average for a cadet's primary role-
• 7: Experience from expert level work, has unique innovations.
• 8: Worthy of intersystem renoun.
• 9: Nobel/Grandmaster/Olympic.

If you've got a skill + attribute at level 8 or 9, it should be a big deal for your character.

Maybe i skipped something but what do each basic attribute do (bonus to what?) and represent?

are there other skill?

what game system did you actually choose/build?

are the 128 point for the skill only or do it also apply to all other category? (Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, etc)

Cheese or bacon?

Can't I have cheese and bacon? ;P Looks like a home-brew system to me though. I think those 128 points are across all the skills. So, basic, natural science, culture, etc.

Also, I think 128 may be a little high. If you scroll on up and check my character, I've only spent 117 before I ran out of things to spend them on, and I still have quite a few skill/ability combos that equal 9.

I think 128points is just about right. At first I too thought they were perhaps a bit high, but I see that Icekatze wants us to spread our skills around So that our characters have a 'wide-range' of abilities so we are capable of dealing with various situations. It only gets 'pair-shaped' if you focus all your points into only 5 or 6 skills, but again it will show when we have to adjust to shifting situations... such a array of skills will prove how limited the character will be when he can't apply an applicable skill as events evolve.

Gudo... personally I like your selection of skills. I think your design is well-rounded!

I agree with sunphoenix here. At first, 128 seemed like a lot, but then everything worked out pretty well. Just had to spread it around a bit.

One question, though. How do attributes tie in with skills?

I think it has to do with how Icekatze has us spend our points on our skills... the 128 burns up quick! So its not what it looks like. :)

As for stats tying to skills... I would think its situational.

Like sometimes my piloting skill will tie to my Creativity if I'm trying to catch a enemy pilot off guard with some spectacular maneuver as opposed to the obvious stat Reflexes. Fluid... depends on how you wish to utilize the skill!
