Re: Random Discussion on Weapon Systems

The big discussion about linacs vs railguns got me thinking about cyclotrons, but some further reading revealed that they don't work at any particle speeds above a few percent of c due to relativistic effects messing up the interaction with the alternating magnetic fields. So not willing to let a ne...

Well most tanks have that to some extent, though the Leopard's really is huge.

Sinkability?

Bismarck called. It says you need more guns and armor.

Re: Armor values

Umiak plasma weapons are quite capable of hitting Loroi ships at 1 LS range, but are not effective at penetrating Loroi forward defenses at that range. There we go, it turns out B was the correct answer, and that changes everything. Max range at which the beam hits for any damage at all, and max ra...

Re: Page 86

@Andrew Possible, but the Umiak strike me as solid and practical in their approach. They'd have no good reason to destroy an unknown and inferior vessel, and far more reason to contact/capture it for study. If the Umiak's modus operandi was to waste anyone who isn't them, the Orgus would have certai...

What is the Well of Souls?

From the Insider:
1436-1451 Hyperspace instability caused by gravitational tides from Well of Souls stellar remnant makes jump drive unreliable.
A supernova I take it, or is there something more exotic going on?

Re: Armor values

Instead of doing point by point, let me just break down the way I'm thinking of theoretical engagements. Keep in mind that this would only be workable for the Steppes where interdiction fleets intercept the Umiak. If you have to defend a world, then you just have to put your big guns forward and duk...

Re: Page 86

2) A fleet of human super-heavies jumps in directly on top of the Umiak fleet, broadcasts The Immigrant Song on all frequencies and proceeds to decimate them before inviting the Loroi back for a massive celebration kegger on Aldea. Brewskies and Blue Space Elves for everyone! No, this shows up play...

Re: Armor values

Fuel : The task force has been operational in the Naam system for some time, has already engaged the Umiak once, is currently engaging them again, and will have enough spare to leave the system. Whatever the Loroi fuel reserves are, they must be enough to implement hit and run tactics effectively o...

Re: Armor values

The "baffles" created by the engine exhaust extends well behind the ship; putting the turrets out on stalks won't solve this problem. I don't see how this matters. You won't shoot your own engines, and with the extreme ranges we're talking about you would still be able to put all three turrets on t...

Re: Page 85

The problem with torpedoes is that human drive tech sucks and acceleration is only 12 g. This means that closing torpedoes will be slow enough to shoot down with ease, and railguns and lasers are ideal for this sort of job. Next-gen CIWS systems will use lasers, and those of the far future will prob...

Re: Page 86

Something comes to mind here:

Umiak: "Oh, a human! Just FYI but humanity made contact with us two weeks ago and decided to join us. Chao."

Every Loroi glares at Alex in unison.

Alex: "Oh.... fudge."

Re: Armor values

The problem with having your main weapons point backwards is the engine outlets. The engines are essentially openings to the most vulnerable part of the ship; they're very hard to armor or protect with defensive screens (as in the Loroi case I imagine electromagnetic screens have got to interfere w...

Same reason we're trying to develop railguns now: Missiles cost a shitload, take lots of space to store, aren't all that much faster, and go BANG when you shoot them.

Re: Armor values

This is exactly why your weapons should be placed and constructed to have maximum field of fire. Having a weapon do maximum damage only in one direction in a three dimensional battlefield is just asking to be beaten. Why do you think broadsides were dropped with the advent of the turret?
