Re: Terran Nuclear Tech (split from Terran Q&A)
Well is there any chance to use drones to boost Loroi numbers or are drones to cowardly for Loroi taste An unmanned starship would not be less expensive to construct than a manned starship, (it might be more expensive, due to the automated systems that would need to replace the crew's function), an...

Re: Kinetic impactors and other space weapons
Out of curiosity, what sort of distances are we looking at for a "safe" jump vs. one that have a significant chance of failure? (Assuming no other factors are taken into account but distance.)

Re: Kinetic impactors and other space weapons
Someone is posting about relativistic bombardment and my spidey sense tingled. I always liked the idea, in-universe, of combining a relativistic bombardment with hyperspace travel. As stated in the comic resources, jumping through hyperspace is a bit like playing darts- when a ship enters hyperspace...

Re: Page: 118
Anyone else cringe when he showed a still-strange and still-potentially hostile and technologically superior race exactly where Sol should be? Especially since Listel like Beryl were stated to have eidetic memories at some point, if I remember correctly. Even if they have no plans to wipe us out or ...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs
A few people actually asked where I got the values for Terran Railgun velocities- there's actually a chart on the Shipboard Weapons Profile page that tags their muzzle velocity at 200-400km/s. Terran ships will certainly be able to carry alien torpedoes, if they can get someone to give or sell them ...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs
I don't think such a system would need the same sort of velocities that a traditional railgun would need- since the projectiles and buses are semi-guided (By this I mean they're able to guide themselves onto the target within a frontal cone; since the majority of their velocity is imparted on them f...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs
On the topic of missiles... I've been playing with the idea of using massive, hull-mounted railguns to launch a missile bus. (Think Tolot blisters) You'd fire these at an enemy fleet, using the railguns to make up for the fact that human missiles don't have the same acceleration as their Loroi and U...

Re: Random Discussion on Weapon Systems
Ah, Tanner, you are a kindred soul in the art of taking nominally peaceful technology and using it for war and destruction, unfortunately "microjumps" don't work. Because any particular FTL jump is still influenced by gravity, it first has to defeat the escape velocity of the star, or else it will g...

Re: Random Discussion on Weapon Systems
Fuel isn't a huge concern, considering that most of the RKV's journey would be coasting along after an initial burn got it up to .75-.9c, after which it could go almost completely dark, only running enough power to keep the targeting computers and burning it's engines just enough to keep it on cours...

I've actually been thinking of doing some creative writing stuff for some of the Terran ships from here. Just started a new semester though, so I'll probably get around to it when things are less crazy.

Re: Random Discussion on Weapon Systems
Why not take the gun out of the equation? Even the slowest Terran warships are scooting around at 4Gs of acceleration. Why not take a few rockets, strap them to big rocks with a bit of fuel, some point defense weapons, a big MAM-bomb, and a targeting system and launch them towards Umiak space? Sure,...

Only if you actually saw the website. They're uploading subliminal messages to buy knock-off drugs right into your brain, now.

Re: Page 93
There's another problem, though. Without some other population control, they'll expand in an area until they exhaust some critical resource. You end up with a system full of drones, but lacking in exploitable deposits of rare elements (which may only be used in minuscule amounts in individual drone...

Having telepathy is also a mixed bag. It can allow very close communication within a local group of scientists, but reliance on telepathy deters communication with more distant groups and the community at large. The Loroi are very good at solving specific problems within a discipline (as in produci...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs
I have to agree with Mjolnir on this one: Having an exposed "observation deck" is a dumb idea. It does nothing that a sensor suite can't do better without putting trained crew at risk. (Consider that the distances at which these battles take place means that you likely can't even see the enemy witho...

Re: Page 93
Solemn, your above Wall-o-Text was an amazing read, however there is one point I'd like to nitpick about the relative research capabilities of Humanity and the Loroi. Loroi researchers actually have several advantages due to their biology which our researchers do not share. Loroi longevity means tha...

I don't think we'd need insurrection. Not immediately anyway. The first step I'd take is to spread Humanity out into as many places as possible. Diaspora is the word we're looking for, the farther we're spread out, the harder it is to conquer us. This goes beyond just colonizing planets in other sys...

Re: After Chapter 2
I was actually thinking about this recently, and since the bot necro'd up the post I figure I could throw in my own unsolicited advice. I think the best bet might be for Arioch to continue with story and pencils, but bring in someone to do inking and colors which is, from what I understand, the most...

Re: psychological warefare on the Umiak.
But these days we´ll maybe witnessing the downfall of capitalism. At risk of being political, I don't think it's the downfall of capitalism, it's mostly just shifting to a more comfortable position; we've witnessed that a purely socialist system isn't sustainable, now we're seeing that a purely cap...
