Re: Page 202: WHY?

If they're using Cloud as a sacrificial decoy, I would think they would have at least dressed her up as a pilot. After so many years at war, I am pretty sure the Umiak know that a Soroin Paset isn't likely to be flying a VIP shuttle.

Re: Page 189: GO AWAY!

Q: the mom and child don't have hair. I find it interesting that they have access to scalp shaving, while trying to survive and stay together. I'd expect priorities to shift in such cases, and hair to grow abundantly. They've used (or have had used on them) a chemical depilatory treatment, I'd assu...

Re: Question: Loroi Meet UNSC

I have to agree with Icekatze... comparing space operas rarely works well. Source material is often inconsistent, contradictory, or just plain absurd. And many many assumptions have to be made about the various "space magics" involved. I don't really know Halo stuff, so my examples will be ST vs SW ...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

Loroi random number generation for games, if needed, could be provided by drawing (identical to the touch) numbered chits from a bag.

I don't think psychometry is a thing they can do, is it?

Re: Page 117: I will demonstrate!

Yeah, it may be that "Zero" is the greatest number possible in the available time-frame. Then again, the colony mission doesn't necessarily have to be well equipped or to have high odds of succeeding to be worth sending in this situation. A large bulk carrier with a few hundred women, a several tho...

Re: Page 117: I will demonstrate!

Heck, I would be surprised if Humanity isn't equipping and sending out as many colony ships as possible on secret deep colonization missions as insurance against 'glassing' too. I'd hate to burst your bubble, but the amount of time until Umiak encroachment on their territory begins only a few years...

Re: Page 117: I will demonstrate!

The problem with the "glass all the Human worlds and pretend they never existed" solution is that the Loroi could never be sure they got all the Humans, and nothing else would be so sure to drive (what's left) of Humanity into the arms of the Umiak. If Umiak cloning tech could be adapted to humans, ...

Re: Page 117: I will demonstrate!

Set that conversation in the Age of Exploration between an indigenous elder and a European ship's captain, and it isn't as odd. Especially if, somehow, it is the indigenous elder who has showed up on the European coast. Setting it in current day earth, where there isn't any terra incognita left, and...

The beard question has been asked before, and, as I recall the answer was that the Scout Corps has long lasting depilatories.

Re: Space Warfare

I thought of the sphere issue, but dismissed it as I was talking about direct fire/beam weapons. Being closer or farther away won't make the beam miss, just hit a wee bit earlier or later. Only displacement from the predicted position perpendicular to the path of the beam will result in a miss, so t...

Re: Space Warfare

A two second delay might not be all that long, but Loroi ships can move/accelerate a heck of a lot faster than WWII ships. At maximum range, a shell from a 16" gun on the Iowa would spend about 90 seconds in flight. An Iowa class BB moving at 30 knots would move about 1500 meters in that amount of t...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

At some point some hunter gatherers may have figured out that protecting the farmers (for a price) was more beneficial in the long run. Especially when the farmesrs start to crank out more advanced weapons to arms them with then the other roaming bands had available. So the farmers become the civil...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

Tempest is the last of its class. Statistically, she is a dangerous ship to serve on, possibly because she has too much extraneous mass in her design, possible (again) because she is essentially a pre-war design. Now, if you are the emperor and have a critic who is too prominent to just administrati...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

Prior to the start of the war, the Loroi hadn't been in a foreign war for ~600 years, and their last civil war was ~350 years back. It is unclear how long the design phase for a new class of ships is for the Loroi. There is a good chance that the Vortex class (Tempest) may have had a substantial amo...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

... even if the ship had lost control, there's nothing that should have made it suddenly veer to one side and drop out of the sky. It's just bad Hollywood writing. I figure it must have been the helmsman getting his arms tangled in the ship's wheel as he fell over dead. I mean, come on, this is a u...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

A more basic question : Are grav compensators subtractive, or do they compensate up to their rating, then collapse? Subtractive : You have a 35G compensator. You accelerate at 40G, you feel (40G-35G) 5Gs. Collapsing : You have a 35G compensator. You accelerate at 40G, your compensation field collaps...

In their defense, the UK and France did declare war on Germany over its invasion of Poland, as per their treaty obligations. The treaty was not a universal defense alliance, though. It specified a declaration of war on Germany in the event that Germany attacked Poland. There was no requirement to de...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

Kittens, Horses, chocolate*, and five times as many menfolk as they're used to?

If these things are as popular with Loroi women as they are with human ones, it is a good thing Loroi don't lie, Otherwise many of them would dismiss stories of Earth as the fevered dreams of some lonely young warrior!
