Re: Emerging Tech
I would think that visible light Li-Fi would have limited range outdoors because of interference of light from other sources. Microwaves are better suited to this role, and microwave communication links have been used successfully in this manner for some time. This is not exactly a novel technology...

Re: Page 107 Discussion
Also, our best planet detection method (transit photometry) only works for the tiny fraction of planetary systems that are edge-on to us, and so transit the face of the star. The odds that a particular system that you're looking for happens to be discoverable using this method are very remote. Woul...

Re: Page 107 Discussion
Supposedly the British still use miles. Real-world units and engineering-units don't intrinsically need to be the same thing, particularly since Real-world units are primarily colloquial in use, not precise. The Fahrenheit scale is similar: Celsius has a more sensible footing from a technical persp...

Re: The coming "Age of Abundance", and "Humans Need Not Appl
Since it's inception in 1987, the Docklands Light Railway has had three incidents. One was a bombing. Another was a collision, and another had a train crash through buffers and end up handing off the end of an elevated section of track. In both of the crashes, a human was driving the trains. Why is ...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
hi hi Actually, we know that the resolution on their holograms is at least as good as our computer monitors, because they display smooth gradients blending from one color to another. Fair enough then. It just seemed kind of weird that most holograms shown were not displaying things like that. Oh we...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
hi hi I don't know what its official designation is, but there are probably a number of different names that could apply to it. Threat well, tactical display, sensor globe, etc. It can display red, green, yellow, and blue, and display them in gradations. Why would there be any reason to think that ...

Huh. So they do. ... but then, I don't see any black screen behind them. Are they not 'true' holograms? [EDIT] On http://well-of-souls.com/outsider/outsider064.html the Barsam's screen is shown to be translucent from behind. But if so, then we should see the bridge external display coming through i...

That's what I was referring to as the Bridge Tactical Display. It has a few colours, but hardly the whole spectrum.icekatze wrote:hi hi
It might also be worth pointing out that the Threat Well also displays a variety of colors.

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Either way they'd be black or very dark gray; a true hologram would be translucent. It's an oblate spherical chamber with paneled metal walls, with each panel having a number of emitters on it. I'm guessing screens then. I haven't seen any holograms in Outsider that had more than a few colours. The...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
What would the virtual windows on the bridge look like if they broke, lost power, or for some other reason stopped displaying images? Probably the same grey as the other walls? I assume they just wouldn't be there anymore? Depends on whether they're screens or holograms. If holograms, you'd see wal...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
It's called "taimat." It's stable as long as it is kept superfluid, at a very low temperature. In an emergency, the fuel can be vented into space, where it will boil and irregularly decay -- which gives off a lot of energy and radiation -- but which is usually preferable to having it explode inside...

(Double posting because significant time since last post) Went to see The Martian in the cinema today. It was really good. What I find weird is that they ignored the landing stage on the MAV. Aries III 's MAV still contained plenty of fuel, as Watney states when gathering the hydrazine for his wate...

My point is that the America class is stated on Insider to have a forward ventral shuttle bay, which America has had replaced by Mjolnir. Si...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)
Rather than staggered fire for cooldown purposes, it could be an issue of manufacturing. Perhaps humans and Loroi can't reliably build laser/plasma focusing elements of large size, so they go with what works and build multi-barrel mounts. They'll bring the same power to bear on a target, but throug...

Aside from the helmet lights, most of those are probably issues that would have been in the book. According to HOCGaming, most of the movie was accurate to it.
