I think, beyond motherly instincts and gender dynamics, Beryl may be looking for her career. A new spacefaring race which looks a lot like Loroi? Being the first to document data about their society could get an otherwise unremarkable Listel into the Hystory books if only as a footnote.

It's a slow tumble, enough to give a sense of direction, but still low enough to float for quite some distance.
