Re: Happy Independence Day
We sometimes make too much 'noise' about our independence, while not actually doing enough to properly protect our freedom from those in power - or who desperately WANT to be in power. Lots of false patriots (or as Thomas Paine said 'Sunshine Patriots') in the US will talk the talk, but not walk the...

Re: Why FTL Starships Should Never Land On A Planet....
That's basically the Frank Herbert 'Dune' Highliner in a nutshell.
Huge FTL (albeit jump ship/dimensional gate or..?) ship - disgorges lots of smaller craft in the destination system.

Re: Do Loroi feel death?
This is probably quite true. Consider that in the not too distant past, children often died very young. Infant mortality was very high even in Europe and the early US/Canada. People often just accepted that this would happen and moved on as best as they could. It would hurt but, they dealt with it...

Re: The Science & Technology News Thread
And so many don't even know the different between a "Cruiser" hull and a "Destroyer" hull - not that it matters as much anymore. Or for that matter, that a "CV" is actually a " C ruiser, a V iation" instead of " C arrier V essel". Technically, the Ticonderoga class were intended as improved Kidd cla...

Re: How would the Loroi Army invade a planet?
From my point of view - assuming the Theians can't contest orbital space, the battle's already over. Resisting from that point only invites destruction. Any reasonably well equipped orbital fleet should be able to select from a variety of attack methods including "crowbars" (simple metal rods) that ...

Somehow - this circular argument kinda brings back this old Art Clarke story:

Keep in mind that power generation also implies more cooling required.
Anything that produces power, or uses power, or transfers power (minus perfect superconductors) produces waste heat. Thermodynamics will not be ignored...

Right - stop this thread immediately! It's getting very silly! https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7f/Graham_Chapman_Colonel.jpg People are spending far too much time and energy trying to justify something that has very limited practical applications. Mechs are -cool- but, not really somethi...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting
^ And that's where the materials used would be critical. Whatever "handwavium" is used to build a "Mech" would have to be very strong, tough and very light. If you have something like that - why not just build a better tank from it instead? Unless you have to fight in a swamp, or mountains - there's...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting
Yes - there is a "cool factor" with walking tanks - otherwise Japanese Anime would be far less fun/varied and we would never have had "Battletech" (and other such fun games).
Practical? Absolutely not - under any realistic conditions.

Re: Page 169: The most messed up!
Thing is - that image of Kirk as a shoot-first, ask questions later, always gets the girl type isn't entirely correct... He just as often talked, or otherwise figured his way out of a bad situation - i.e. used his wits. Yes, that means he occasionally talked a computer into suicide with a quick cour...
