Re: Page 190: K-CHUNK
Ammunition is a factor once you consider they have to move it across not only multiple light-years (and parsecs), but also also through space that can be raided by the enemy. It would be many jumps back to any manufacturing facility. Even if they are using plasma-based weapons. However, it this unit...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread
I don't remember this question being asked (it may have been), but why would someone in the mid-22nd century know the ending theme of the Mickey Mouse Club? I barely know it because they showed reruns of the original Mickey Mouse Club on the Disney Channel when they started up decades ago (around 19...

Re: The Astronomy Thread
Given our space flight technology...its going to take a very long time to find out. Without an FTL drive or other means of jumping to another star system, a probe will take decades to centuries to reach even the Alpha Centauri system. Even with a theoretical 0.1 times the speed of light probe it tak...

Re: The Astronomy Thread
I wonder about how common gas giant sized planets are in the habitable zones of stars. All ours are well outside that zone. Terrestrial planets that we are aware of would be theoretically smaller, though a giant dirt ball is possible I suppose. What sort of life could live there?

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)
The remake? Its fine. Different but I've played it a lot. A lot of the ways to win with the Wargaming made version is to control choke points. Deny access to large regions of space to the other races. Colonies behind those blocks. Increase your population and tech up to Battleships and Titans. The v...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
One of my grandfathers was suppose to be named after his father, but most people had called by great-grandfather by his initials...so when the doctor's asked they gave the initials....so my grandfather's name became D W, jr. My grandmother had an awful time writing to him during World War II, as the...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Typically one would have a name with a number only if they are of one family that continues to reuse a name. Sometimes its for bookkeeping purposes, especially of multiples of them are alive at the same time (Albert Smith, Albert Smith, jr, and Albert Smith III, as a three generation example.) Other...

Re: How would the Loroi Army invade a planet?
Our satellites, by treaty, are not armed. If you are going for space superiority, you either park enough ships in orbit to always have someone overhead of any given place on the planet, or you park fewer ships in high geostationary orbits to have coverage of the entire planet. The point wasn't about...

Re: How would the Loroi Army invade a planet?
Unlike any war on Earth, the Loroi have space superiority. Unlike air power or missiles directed by satellites, which are not always overhead, a few starships in orbit can fire on any target, anywhere on the planet at a moments notice. And they are the eyes of the invasion in addition to them being ...

If I remember from other blue species (fictional, of course) they tend to have cobalt based blood. Though in nature, the octopus has blue blood that is copper based.

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
At one end of the spectrum: we are talking more or less of smart mine (dropped munitions that activate against a passing target), and on the other end: photon torpedoes (which can be fired at warp speeds and maintain speed with a warp sustainer). Mass drivers tend to be vary depending on the intende...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Railgun do ignore shields. Its just the difficulty of actually hitting anything that pretty much renders them useless in regular combat. (In Space Battleship Yamato 2199 the Earth built Yamato uses fusion shells from its shock cannon barrels as a backup when the energy to the weapons are cut off. Th...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Combat ranges for the warring factions here (Loroi and Umiak) seem to start getting into effective ranges around 90 Megameters between ships. While the Loroi can engage up to 300 and 400 Megameters distance (and 600 Mm with the Wave Loom), the amount of damage is greatly reduced....plus the likeihoo...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread
The question would be, do combat beam weapons of these races actually travel at the speed of light, or are they slower than that due to the particles they deliver to target? While the reduction in speed might be "negligible" it would be enough to detect the beams before impact. It would also mean th...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)
Also most of the war seems to be in space. Once you have space superiority, you can drop much, much bigger things on a planet if you want large scale death and destruction. If you want to occupy it, there are probably better things to use. Assuming you want the civilian population alive as a labor f...
