Re: Page 224: Optimistic Way Of Looking At Things
A blaster would be a beam emitter and some kind of power cell; I think ideally you'd want to have power cells that don't easily explode. I think you could rig a blaster so that it overloads and fails, but I doubt it would explode in an efficient or predictable manner that would make it useful as a "...

Re: Page 224: Optimistic Way Of Looking At Things
A small arms blaster would be designed to be fired in atmosphere, so I don't see that being a problem. Oxygen accelerates combustion but it doesn't itself burn. The most obvious danger in using higher power settings on a blaster is the risk of missing your intended target and having the shot go thr...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
"The added wrinkle is that telepathy offers unique ways to intimidate and coerce others in ways that may be undetectable to third parties." Even when the third parties themselves are telepathic? I would think that this opportunity gives the adults an unparalleled level of discipline and control. Te...

Re: My Theory On How Loroi Sanzai Began...
Well, I am aware of research that indicates that when we decide to move our arm, the signal to do so originates outside of the pre-frontal cortex (where conscious thought takes place). The motor signal actually arrives at the arm a fraction of a second *before* we consciously think the decision to ...

Re: Cone Art and Trench Art and Outsider Setting
In the Loroi tradition, customizations to uniform or vehicles are considered to represent a sort of medal or citation, and so can only be done with permission. Since they are a symbol of prestige, such markings tend not to be comical or frivolous. Examples in the comic are the crescent moon insignia...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
The Loroi seem to have a history of endless bloodshed and struggled to establish rules and laws meant to keep their people in check. How often do Loroi youth get into interpersonal fights? Do adults allow the youth to 'vent' their aggressions and frustrations? At what point do adults intervene to b...

Re: My Theory On How Loroi Sanzai Began...
Instructions are technically symbols in the linguistic sense. Usually its kindof opaque to a human since it tends to unroll into an excessively long sequence compared to the 'code' but its not a total abortion of a translation from one to the other, you can comprehend machine code. Its kindof limit...

Re: My Theory On How Loroi Sanzai Began...
Even computer programming has it's own language, without it you cannot program anything Computer code isn't the best example, since it consists of instructions to a computer rather than what linguists would call a language for communicating information. The machine code that's executed on a compute...

Re: My Theory On How Loroi Sanzai Began...
Telepathy is non-verbal; it doesn't use words. There is no relationship between Trade and telepathy. Telepathy is not just "mental speaking." If that were the case, then telepathy would be useless for reading the thoughts of aliens who don't speak Trade. Loroi babies do start to learn telepathy in t...

Re: Inevitable Best Endings Versus Endings That Could Have Mutiple Good Endings...
The ability to recover from human-factors related disruptions to something that may have been getting set up for multiple seasons is an underappreciated aspect of television (in this case I agree they did not recover particularly well). On the contrary, I think it's one of the most obvious problems...

Re: Inevitable Best Endings Versus Endings That Could Have Mutiple Good Endings...
For a series that's designed to go on indefinitely, that can be done in theory, with story arcs that each play out with a beginning, middle and end. In practice in the world of television, this almost never works, with shifting teams of writers, producers and actors. One of the greatest strengths of...

Hello Arioch, just wanted to ask if you will update the official site with newer pages, if so, when? It's been an awfully long time for most of us here. Yes, of course I'll post new pages. It should have been weeks ago, and would have been this Monday, but a client had an emergency request this wee...

Re: Inevitable Best Endings Versus Endings That Could Have Mutiple Good Endings...
Although I suppose people love DVD extras, I usually take it as a bad sign when I see that a movie had multiple endings. A good story usually has a very specific beginning, middle, and end. There are a variety of ways to get there, but it seems to me that if you don't know what the ending of your st...

What about “touch grass!”? Common grass-like organisms would be liio and misesa , though they are not cultivated in lawns like Earth grass. "To touch" is dollida . Though saying "Misesa dollidaro!" would probably result in a quizzical look from the listener. Unrelatedly, what about “power...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Do the support caste warriors have lower status than the combat castes? I know that they cannot normally hold command positions, are they viewed as "lesser warriors" because of this, or are they just seen as not having the skill set needed to command? How much of a say do the high ranking support c...
