Mecha could work as a setting, where road or large field-like areas just arent available. For example, planet without infrastructure or Mars-like rocky deserts. Or perhaps area covered by volcanic eruption and several meters of sticky dust and flowing ash, and every step is step toward unknown danger.

Nobody had not yet talked about what happens when the vejivle takes small damage. Tank: one of tracks break. It can still drive (badly) in circle and shoot around while the crew is still unharmed. The biggest advantage on mobility that human sized robot gain from walking, is that world (stairs, doors, cars, seats, etc) are built for humans.
