Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
The wave-Loom isn't meant to take out swarms of enemy ships. It is intended to inflict massive damage on the most powerful of the enemies ships. It is a "super heave killer". Unfortunately it leaves the user defenceless due to the massive energy drain. As such it is a very circumstantial weapon. It...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
That's where the 'enough of them' comes into play. Relatively sure if simply spamming Wave-Loom equipped ships actually worked, the Loroi would have done it by now. Thus far we know of only three ship types that have been equipped with Wave Looms, all of which have been battleships or bigger. The C...

Re: Outcast Quest
I think we're getting derailed here by the technical stuff. In the end it doesn't really matter how we do it so long as Razor says we can. The relevant questions for the various plans seem to be as follows: Can we use drones at all, even crude short-range ones or drifting beacons? How strong does a ...

Re: Outcast Quest
Cats hiss as a genetic imitation of snakes, and there are these things on Earth called "brood parasites". It's not a safe assumption. Remember not to turn on the generators unless something is getting too close, lest something new be learned at a bad time. Also, it might be wise to sprinkle infraso...

Re: Outcast Quest
Did the Mantas or Gargoyles release their own infrasound pulses, or was that only the Whales? Yes. The only light that's present in the Briar Patch comes from lightning and whatever you create yourself. There may be bioluminescence out and about but you haven't encountered it in significant quantit...

Re: Outcast Quest
Razor, question: can Attitude Thrusters both be built on Fenrir in a single turn, and used as intended in this plan? Incidentally, guys: my thought on that plan is that it's something to tack on to the rest of the plan: keep on adding on. Also, if poorly implemented, it could dump the spawnlings in...

Re: Outcast Quest
What I'm really worried about is the possibility that their parents will show up around the hatching. That ain't a possibility, that a certainty at this point. Indeed. The whales will defiantly arrive at almost the same time as the hatching. Best guesses suggest that it's why they were headed our w...

Re: Outcast Quest
You know that magnetic fields repulse them if they get too close, but that's about it. As for species: Whales: Massive creatures that swim through the thick atmosphere and filter feed on hydrocarbons. Mantas: Smaller, more agile carnivores. Tend to hunt isolated whales in packs. Gargoyles: Batlike ...

Re: Outcast Quest
Enjoyable as all hell to read, but I can only give it semi-canon. I don't see you guys setting off in two or three turns unless you pretty much raced for Fuel Ref + Docks and then went with only a partially filled hold, though you always could surprise me. Also the Loroi were toying with your chara...

Re: Outcast Quest
Glad everyone likes it! I leave it to Razor to decide if the last snip is canonical or not, though if it is I suspect we will have to nail down a firm departure date for our Loroi trip or risk REALLY ticking them off. Writing the Loroi kids' reactions to their gift from 'Satan Claws' was a blast tho...

Re: Outcast Quest
I've been waiting for Razor to post the Christmas party so I could unleash my own second wave of Omake! I've had the ideas for a while, but I needed to know what all would be at the party so I would know which of my ideas were usable. The last little snip is likely not canon (since not even our spoo...

Re: Outcast Quest
I am guessing that Over There won't transfer to an other research project. Can we get a d50 roll on a research project of our choosing if the next roll for over there is high enough and doesn't transfer anywhere? Wherever it's logical to apply an overflow of knowledge to the next project, I'll do s...

Re: The Astronomy Thread
hi hi When scientists started discovering and creating new elements, like Nobelium, they didn't say "Oh my gosh, there are too many elements on the periodic table, we need to reclassify some of these, and besides they decay too fast to be important anyway." They just expanded the periodic table. Th...

Re: The Astronomy Thread
Someone who metaphorically wants magical unicorns to exist in space, I assume. It's fairly easy to come up with a sensible description of the low-end of a planetary mass based on the self-attractive force required to pull it into a spheroid despite some particular starting conditions (on average 0 ...

Re: Outcast Quest
My turn now. This ran a bit longer than I intended, but eh. I also haven't fully edited it, so I beg the Hive Mind's pardon if there are a few typos. There Be Whales Here “Megastorm. Got to be.” “Higgins, as usual you’re boring as hell,” commented Flight Lieutenant Lani Iolana as she rolled their sh...

Re: Fiction
but I'm having a hard time imagining a scenario in which a supersonic humanoid is a significant advantage that would justify the rather severe cost of development. Oh don't take anything I post here seriously, I just like to talk about hypotheticals. In this case I was imagining how the flash might...

Re: Evacuate Earth
I doubt very much that you would be able to accurately predict the exact path of a neutron star through our solar system 70 years in advance of the encounter. I don't think it's possible to know the mass of the object to a close enough precision to be able to say with certainty what would happen. T...

Re: Evacuate Earth
If what you're interested in is the evacuation scenario, then it's probably best not to worry at all about what the disaster is, because inventing such a disaster is probably more work than inventing the evacuation scenario. My thoughts exactly. Not that coming up with interesting ways to vaporize ...

Re: Evacuate Earth
For the sake of argument, suppose the Neutron Star is set to collide with the Sun. Then we are screwed. There is no way we could get -any- ship far enough out of the solar system to survive the energetic event that will happen to the sun after a neutron star smacks into it. Not without a warp, hype...

Re: Outcast Quest
Best to post the Omake's in the thread rather than clutter up the forum. They'll be listed in the first post for ease of finding, even if they don't net a bonus. Working on the survey after I've had another look at the vote scrip to clarify what promotes your colonists morale. {Edit} And done. Surv...
