Re: [Fan Fiction] The pale horse (Updated: 03/02/2016)

I understand the point and you partially got what I am going for. Yes the story is about the Loroi and yes one aspect of what I am going for is to humble the Loroi by introducing a monster. I don't believe however that the monster has to be hidden behind a veil for tension, tension can be added by ...

Re: [Fan Fiction] The pale horse (Updated: 03/02/2016)

Because what you are presuming is not the point of the story ;) A construct like what the Historians use would not be to fulfill the duties that Senator Alexander Jardin chose to himself fulfill; for a variety of personal reasons. I'm not sure if I'm not following you or you aren't following me. Ma...

Re: [Fan Fiction] The pale horse (Updated: 03/02/2016)

Its going to be a short story but I am not going to hint the plot any further than this: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HumansAreCthulhu I did notice the link, but that brings me back to my other point: why make the Humans be Cthulhu? The canon Soia are perfectly capable of being Cthulh...

Re: [Fan Fiction] The pale horse (Updated: 03/02/2016)

So, you think that the Humans are some short of good-willing heroes?   Yes, keep believing that... Well it would certainly be more interesting if the Humans were the villains, since now you have a nifty underdog story with the Loroi/Umiak as the protagonists, but the tec...

Re: [Fan Fiction] The pale horse (Updated: 03/02/2016)

Not a huge fan of "Humanity, F- Yeah!" stories myself, but I figured I'd give it a skim...until I bumped into the part where Humanity is at Tech Level 16 . Congrats! http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p313/Starbug360/Motivational%20Posters/Bolostomp.jpg More seriously, I shall now offer some critici...

Re: Outcast Quest

I'm with dragoongfa. We'll need the Ordinance Plant to avoid mining penalties, and our existing strategy of research/diplomacy makes the Frontier Party the most logical election choice. I also agree that 60% is too low for me, so I think we need to Teach Trade and Improve Relations before we formall...

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre

Unfortunately, search functions don't work very well with a translator. On a less fan-gasmy note, I noticed a while back when I was reading through the old unfinished 2006 Outsider simulation rules that the Historians and their weapons aren't mentioned. Instead the PDF credits the advanced plasma w...

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre

The Umiak actually dislike conformity and are actively encouraged to seek alternative solutions (within the confines of their orders), but the zeal and single-mindedness of most Umiak means that their behavior is often predictable. In particular, the attrition fleets that the Loroi see most often a...

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre

It is quite obvious that Kikitik-27 is not a conventional Umiak commander, what with his habit of withdrawing rather than charging recklessly to his doom, etc. Somewhere there are comics on the world, where there are examples of "normal umiak" and a few fights? When reading these statements appears...

Either way, since 25% of this thread is now nothing but our most recent argument, I'd say it's safe to move on to a new line of questioning... Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre

Except that seemingly the Umiak don't care too much about losses, so might see the use of a dedicated decoy a loss of direct offensive power in the heat of battle, because of the resources used for it. In fairness to the idea though, if any fleet could pull off the decoy trick it would be the Umiak...

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre

Ah, sorry for the misunderstanding. The reason a torpedo could never be created that mimics the signatures created by a space ship is because of the HUGE differences between the energy emitted by a missile and a ship. To quote THIS site: All right. The site is very good. I read it and like it. But ...

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre

It IS possible to create a decoy. What Arioch is saying is that if, as you said, a decoy is just as expensive as a real torpedo, there would be no reason not to just fire a real torpedo instead. The only way a decoy is useful is if it less expensive than an actual weapon. The example you have liste...

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre

That makes it useless as a decoy. You would be better off firing more real torpedoes. Decoy MALD-J (red). Speed like an airplane. Size as at medium-range missiles. http://www.defencetalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/F-16-MALD-J-jammer.jpg Why is such a concept in space is not possible? It IS poss...

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thre

Complex thought, I'll try to translate them correctly. The real dividing line between a light destroyer and a heavy gunboat is that the latter has a docking linkage, and the former doesn't. So a light destroyer needs to be able to carry enough fuel and supplies to operate on its own without a mothe...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

If you're asking what it's made out of, I don't know for sure. I imagine that it's probably a composite of a carbon fiber structural framework interwoven with an insulating material, alternating with layers of a strong, conductive alloy that helps spread and dissipate heat. Different combatants at ...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

Though I'm certain someone must have asked this already, I've been unable to locate it, so I'll ask now.

What do the Loroi use as armor for their ships? Do the Umiak use anything different, or is armor pretty universal once you reach a certain level of technology?

Re: Page 108 & 109 Discussion

This is why I mentioned my "Point Defence Fleet" idea. Humanity doesn't have lasers powerful enough to kill Umiak ships, but they can kill missiles. Hell, their numerous small laser turrets are perfect for the role. They just need to be able to keep up with Loroi ships in order to do that. The Loro...
