Re: Page 154: Run attachment? Y/N

Depends what it's standby mode actually means, and how much energy it actually uses and radiates. Or that the shuttle actually have some monitoring system equipped, and they are currently operational. I was assuming based on it being called "quiet" mode that it meant it wouldn't broadcast, not that...

Re: Page 154: Run attachment? Y/N

To sum up what we know so far, it appears that the Historian AI/VI, while in standby mode inside it's bucket (it's obviously not registering on the shuttle's displays since everything's supposed to be offline to reduce emissions), is aware that Alex is alone in the cargo bay and has obtained a tabl...

Re: Page 153: You've got Mail!

Still I think a full-fledged AI would need more processing power than a mobile device which is just designed to display data and be connected to a remote server would offer. Nothing would stop it to send only a cut down version of itself though, that can fit and run on the device at a reasonable sp...

Re: Page 153: You've got Mail!

Not giving access to your ships' comms system to foreign entities with unknown, but more than likely way better tech than you, is a sane and cautious approach to these things. So it's self contained AI in a can, with limited resources. Passing a byte stream through without decoding it is generally ...

Re: Page 153: You've got Mail!

First, obviously the Historian AI managed to decrypt the tablet, figure out communication frequences and protocols on an alien device and whatnot. That might be reasonable. But it begs the question... did it share its knowledge with the Loroi? If it did, Beryl would have been untruthful when she re...

Re: Page 153: You've got Mail!

Do you guys think the Historian did just broke the radio silence tryng to connect with iPad 2160 ? Assuming it have been informed that they are now under radio silence. Beyond that, see my post above about the power requirements of radio. And IMO, Beryl's warning was more of along the lines of don'...

Re: Page 153: You've got Mail!

hi hi Hmm... sending a wireless message seems like a bad idea under the current circumstances. Either way, several minutes is no short break, better call the others back in soon before they get too suspicious. ;) The power used is the key. You don't need much power to talk to a receiver a few meter...

Re: Page 152 Discussion: "Inventorying your equipment"

http://well-of-souls.com/outsider/outsider152.html Based on the last panel, are human flight-suits even less flexible than their EVA suits? (His suit seemed pretty inflexible by itself) I'd assume that an EVA suit will generally be less flexible by default as it would be build to withstand a hard v...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

I tend to think it's not a tablet or pda, it looks too small and fat for that. My guess would be something that can be opened judging by the rubber grips, something of use in an emergency situation... pocket size first aid kit, geiger counter, air analyzer or something along those lines... Ruggeriz...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

Wonder if this device will start automatically search for network and compromise their position. Depends whether it is a passive or active search. Depends on the protocol it uses (active broadcast on boot/network interface activation, or waiting for the access points to tell them what's around to c...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread

Appearantly space can be found for extra crewmembers, since the Yorktown version comes with 95 crew. I assume those extras are necessary for the added weapons. Per the Insider, it lacks the extended fuel tanks of the original Bennet, which'd give you a bit of space for extra berthing and storage/ma...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread

Von Braun's side lost. Germany had arguably the best scientific and engineering community in the world (ex-Nazis were still at the top of jet and rocket development for both the US and Soviets well into the 60's), but they still lost the war. Umm, that's at best debatable, more of a bit of a myth c...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

True but as I said, depending on outside factors. A Soroin in peacetime permanently stuck at a low rank could elect to go civilian if she could relocate herself on a place like Maia. In wartime a warrior doing that would be seen as cowardice and would be a social pariah even in civilian cycles. Or ...

Re: Pages 146, 147: You are officially my Hero

hi hi A friend of mine worked at an insurance company until last recently, and they were still using computers with 8 inch floppy disks and green screens for certain things. Every computer that I got circa early 2000s no longer works, but the old 1993 era computer I've got is still chugging along j...

Re: Pages 146, 147: You are officially my Hero

Computers will probably be so good at reading Latin text in 2160 that barcodes may well be unnecessary, but know... bureaucracy. The speech recognition on my Galaxy S4 still blows me away. They will be still a bit faster parsing fixed form information like barcodes, or 2D codes like QR code. And th...

Re: Pages 146, 147: You are officially my Hero

Barcodes are still a thing in the 22nd century? :ugeek: Why not? If it works now, it'll work then too, they'll still have the computerized inventory tracking in the future, where barcodes (and the 2 dimensional codes like QR) will work for. I'd expected something more advanced like a holographic wa...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

Yeah, I think Alex is getting a full front seat view of how pressed to the Breaking limits the Loroi are in this war! An undetected and unexpected "Gate-Crasher" Fleet is Very Bad news for the Loroi.. they had only two edge against the Umiak onslaught.. their 'Farseer's' ability to detect them comi...
