Re: Page 88
I know we got off into the details, but I figured it might be worthwhile for me to put forth the high level opinion 88 and tictak-27's comments made me think. There is certainly something afoot, even simple analysis leads you to believe the Umiak commander is either portraying false bravado (i.e. ti...

Re: Page 88
My two points: 1) from the insider remember that the loroi communicated and fought with each other (on different planets) before the advent of the tech required to actually visit said worlds. I'd put my money on the Loroi knowing everything the Umiak have said. And unlike farseers the Umiak likely k...

Re: Page 88
It's not like umiak fleet Lotai isn't an expected end game for the Loroi. They likely have contingencies in place for such things and the "new" fleets are likely which Loroi forces are taking part in such "hedging" activities. Basically in my mind all this gambit (i.e. lure in the skirmishers and th...

Re: Hyperspace
I guess it comes down to technicalities, but it would stem from specifically which part of the jump drive does the work and where the expense lies in said jump drive. If you basically cannot separate the components of a jump drive (say like you *can't* a tokamak) than it would depend upon the scalin...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs
Self assembly is an interesting concept, especially when you consider that it might be some sort of scaffolding. Also there is the very interesting mixture of microgravity and high vacuum that is space. You may be able to play with process parameters like surface energy etc to make scaffolds more us...

Re: Page 87
Shutting down their engines AFTER the Loroi had shown that they would stay in place for as long as possible, just to confuse the Loroi, really isn't something I'd do. Just to note we don't have any indication (to my knowledge) of how far out said attack group is. For all we know they are blocking t...

Re: Hyperspace
I forget back from the old space tug conversation, can you use one ship to throw another into hyperspace without needing to actually follow? I could see some interesting usage of such an effect. 1) you could have a torpedo platform one system away and if you're accurate enough you could sling torped...

Re: Hyperspace
Since all the nearby mass is in realspace, and apparently none of it (except the crazy people in their starships) in hyperspace, there is always going to be net gravitational pull in the direction of -hyperspace toward realspace. So what if you're in -hyperspace does gravity pull you back to realsp...

Re: Hyperspace
there would be fewer questions if the old forum threads were easily accessible. The thing I find interesting is that Arioch has sort of just said that hyperspace has like a 1 way parallel vector field "gravity" effect. That is to say gravity is (constant?) and always points down, so that you need to...

Re: Page 86
The thing to remember is that the Loroi are very difficult for the Umiak to take on in any numbers unless they can pin the Loroi down. If the Loroi decimate the Bell and the Umiak can't force the Loroi to hold that position they can't really force the Loroi into weapons range, other than to last for...

What happens in these cases?
whiff/ doink you get back in but in the wrong system? or you * might* very unlikely end up in the wrong system but probably end up forever in hyperspace a la liberate.

Re: Page 87
Do the Umiak hand out weapons tech to their allies by the way? I'm inclined to think not given their paranoia of other races. no. As far as I recall some of the "allied" races are given some degree of autonomy like the morat was it? They maintain their own fleets for self defense mostly I think... ...

Re: Page 87
the interesting bit to me is that if the historians are to blame, why. And who is causing the far seer issues in this system. If it's the historians or a random 3rd party how did they convince the Umiak to commit a huge fleet to defend said system without being allied with them. Just cause I think t...

Re: Page 87
I find tictac27 a little hard to understand. I'd think the Umiak could design significantly better translators. The language actually sounds quite easy for a computer to process given it's a stack and the sounds the Umiak use should be *very* easy to parse unlike human speech. Unless there is some w...

Re: Cloning?
Only point I'll make here is enzymes vs catalysts. Enzymes in general do the same job just better, I would expect Loroi to naturally do better than whatever artificial method can be concocted. On the other hand the Umiak rarely want what would happen naturally, they want gravity tolerant big brutes...

Re: Cloning?
I believe the phrase in the insider is something like "the Umiak are believed to partially or completely rely upon artificial reproduction methods". Only point I'll make here is enzymes vs catalysts. Enzymes in general do the same job just better, I would expect Loroi to naturally do better than wha...

Re: Page 86
ME barriers stop all particles with mass, only lasers penetrate. I would clarify that ME barriers can attempt to stop all particles with mass. Hence lasers are the only weapon that is unaffected. I just think "stop" implies a little more efficacy than "actual". Also there are a number of different ...
