Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

Exposition chews up the page count. :D Yup. But many of us enjoy the cultural aspects of speculative fiction, and ways that characters change and behave. When I was younger, I was totally fine reading pulp sci fi where everything is driven by the demands of the Big Bad. Every part of their plots tu...

Yes. Good point. They may be surprised at Alex’s reaction to their ages. Which could range from him looking serious but managing not to say anything all the way to...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

I wonder if the standing (or sitting) next to each other is a traditional way that Loroi present a tale (give or take sanzai vs speech). From page 167, we see that Talon and Spiral are standing tight against each other. Then this WIP frame shows them sitting tight against each other.

Re: Page 167: This one's out early

That's hardly getting uppity, it's a science officer telling a foreign diplomat not to let the superstitions of the soldiery give him a false impression of the loroi as a culture. Yay culture! Little does Beryl know that hearing about a few minor superstitious traditions will make Alex more comfort...

Well, I saw those expressions and I thought... predatory. Like they’re describing something terrible they did to someone who might have deserved it.

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

...They are more in disagreement over the right way to treat a male. Beryl seems to favor the "coddle and tuck them away safely" type, but Talon is - interestingly enough - more open minded and ready to see Alex eye to eye. Yes, that is interesting. We've seen a variety of approaches, including Tem...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

Ah, Talon vs Beryl again. “My science project!” vs “my non-gloomy entertainment!”

Based on the cylindrical object Beryl’s holding:
Talon: What are you doing?! I heard he gets stinky if he eats loroi food.
Beryl: I’m sure a marshmallow will be fine!

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

Yeah. I like to see the cultural interaction. If I wanted ... other stuff, I think there are other websites for that. As someone put it elsewhere in the forums, “I hope he’s gay.” I hope he’s gay, or ace (asexual) or in a committed relationship or took a virginity pledge or something. That’ll give t...

Re: Page 166: Not so true!

... So yes, I think even a Loroi would rarely say (or send) "Yes, this dress does make you look fat", but opt for a statement like "I'm not sure you'd wish to hear the answer to that." ... I have gotten good mileage out of "That dress isn't particularly flattering for you." It's true and useful whi...

Re: [Fanfiction] Writing Prompt: For what dreams may come

All right, it's been a month since Novius contributed. After days of procrastinating, tidying the house, doing lots of laundry* and accidentally losing the first time I tried to write this a few days ago (O back button, I repent! Please set aside your wrath!), here are some plot thoughts for those w...

Re: Page 166: Not so true!

Yep, Talon needs a holiday. Superstitions about probabilities - that’s quite a good way to put it. Well done Arioch for showing some language work arounds. I think pretty much everyone on that bird could benefit from some counselling, and a holiday, and for their friends to stop dying. Only Beryl se...

Re: Page 165: Dalid is Dalid

When you need a feeling felt right, you need a man. Well, I believe the contemporary method is to: Begin to feel afraid Ignore the feeling for as long as possible Notice you’re agitated Misinterpret this as irritation Become angry Take our your feelings on those around you Those Loroi are in for a ...

Re: Page 165: Dalid is Dalid

Alex has been quite talkative up to this point, so the change in behaviour would be noticed by Beryl. He also looked sideways before lying, which might be a tell that Mizol know to look for.

Re: Page 165: Dalid is Dalid

Ahhggghhggh How awful to have a crapload of questions and be too afraid to ask them. Glad I’m not this guy, who probably expected to do the diplomatic equivalent of lurking at the back and hoping to see something useful. Interesting to see that Talon and Spiral do proverbs. And even different (archa...

Re: [Fanfiction] Writing Prompt: For what dreams may come

It's Full of Stars, part 4A: alternate ending OK, so Novus pitched in, and I think it offers more dramatic opportunity because gets to make choices rather than live the dream. However, that would make it the middle of the story rather than the end. In order to clear out some brain space, I'm going ...

Re: Outsider Tech: Sensors

Do you think that if you rigged a mirrored 'sail' to your ship you could hide behind it? You could reflect all your infrared emissions back away from the presumed enemy sensors. You certainly couldn't hide all your emissions, but maybe a substantial arc of them... I guess the difficulty would be get...
