I'm surprised that nobody's suggested Full Metal Jacket yet. It's got everything; history, politics, war, and ending they're sure to misunderstand.

It depends how dense their minds are. If they´re brainwashed like Nazi Germany in ´41, when the majority still really believed in victory, then nearly every movie either confuses them to the max or is considered subversive.bunnyboy wrote:Should it be better avoid that?Gudo wrote:and ending they're sure to misunderstand.
If they´re more like Nazi Germany in ´45, then imagine a movie like Cross of Iron and it´s impact.
But maybe the "pirate" inheritors of Taben would like movies like "Pirates of the Carribean" or "The Crimson Pirate".

Re: Chapter 2 cover
hi hi
The Loroi overall are pretty ruthless, no doubt about that, especially in the warrior caste. However, I don't think they're uniformly so. It has been my impression that they still have some cultural diversity, even though it may not be as diverse as humanity's. (If I remember correctly, Arioch once said in passing something to the effect that humanity's cultural diversity is on the high side of the scale.) Still, there's enough disagreement about various things that the Loroi's history has been one filled with conflict and bloodshed.
I imagine that some of the Loroi, while very aggressive, see enough conflict that they wouldn't care too much to spend their free time watching fantasies of the same. Though this is just my take on things, I think they might be more interested in films that deal with different kinds of conflicts.
• I honestly think the Loroi would probably get a kick out of slapstick humor. Old silent films might even be better due to there being no vocals. Laurel and Hardy, Loony Toons -Road Runner vs Wily Coyote.
• Courtroom dramas might appeal to their longing for a conclusion to the fighting, while others might find the intricacy of Terran justice funny. A Few Good Men, The Wrong Man.
• Horror movies might strike some as being interesting, especially if the Loroi don't have quite the same response to predators that humans do. Nosferatu, Alien.
• Man vs Nature narrative style films in general, or films that make use of the the theme of people overcoming/conquering natural obstacles. Das Blaue Licht, The Edge.

Re: Chapter 2 cover
Even if an alien species had no concept of drama, I think there's very little chance that any alien culture advanced enough for starflight could be naive or stupid enough to mistake a movie for historical record. There are a lot of conventions in movies that we take for granted, that an alien viewer would instantly point out as confusing or unrealistic -- the things that immediately come to mind would be the musical soundtrack, and the frequent cuts between different cameras (even though one camera never sees another).
The Loroi have the advantage of having contact with a dozen or so alien cultures, so there are very few things you could show them that they would not have at least heard of before. The Loroi don't have a broadcast entertainment industry, but they have certainly seen such things produced by their neighbors.
Loroi theater is mainly centered around live performances (because telepathy can't be recorded), and such performances tend to be heavily stylized (in the manner of a kabuki or noh play). These performances are prized as entertainment, but it's important to remember that the performers are usually civilians, so they are not idolized and showered with resources they way they are in our society. And since the performances are live, there is a limit to how "big" an entertainer can get in a practical sense as well, similar to live entertainment on Earth before the development of recording and broadcast media.

Any personal porn would have to have been carefully encrypted and hidden to get smuggled on the ship in the first place. Bellarmine was not a cruise liner, and the crew were not passengers. If any personal objects were allowed on the ship at all, you would be sharply limited as to weight and every item would have to be declared and would be extensively vetted.Voitan wrote:If anything, there's going to be THAT guy, who never liked how small a hassle encrypting, or password protecting his handheld device is, and of course, by murphy's law, it'll be loaded with elf porn, and things even more perverse.
Re: Chapter 2 cover
Not to mention that in a military environment, especially on an installation/ship, non-encryption is simply not an option. I don't think you'd have to hide the physical medium the porn is on though. We've already got crazy large storage in packages as small as micro-SD. In the future, you should be able to pack more into less. I could see the TCA allowing personnel to bring a flash drive for personal media. Just restrict it to read-only terminals without network access.
Re: Chapter 2 cover
I'd also take a guess and say many Loroi in the military might find our films wanting for lack of historical setting.
"Why are your 'Americans' invading Vietnam again?"
"Because the French were losing."
"...and the French were..."
"I think they had claimed it as part of their empire."
"And what advantage is there to holding the land, it seems like a terrible place to stake a claim, and your methods of travel could easily circumvent-"
"It was to contain the spread of Communism."
"Oh, a political suppression, okay; that makes perfect sense, why didn't you say so sooner, we do that all the time!"
D: "Just- just watch the movie, it's more about the people in it than the external situation."
"Oh... how boring."

Alex, Beryl and Fireblade are in the Tempests intel analysis room.
Beryl : Captain, we have a question about some material we found on your ship ( showes alex another crew member "fantasy" pron)
Alex[A]: uh . . . that . . . well . . . I uh
B: Captain, have you ever had contact with use before ?
A: Uh well no, but we have old stories about . . . you . . . um
B: then why do you draw us is such . . . posses
A: Getting a little sweaty: Well I sure it was smuggled on broad . . .show how
Fireblade then looks over Beryl shoulder and see a rather close drawing of herself, suddenly looks at Alex, face = pissed
A: i can explain
B: to which Alex set a new record for flying, with telepathic assistance

Watch out for that puke-colored puke.
Are we presuming that Alex is still suspect, even though he has been granted plenipotentiary status by the Loroi?

He's been granted status by Tempo, Stillstorm would probably still rather take him apart to see what makes him tick. I suspect that the power struggle over Alex's status will be a continuing theme in the story.
