AI 3D is a thing, I guess

Post by Arioch »

I did a few experiments to see where the state of AI-generated 3D models is, and I have to say it's a lot more capable than I expected.

I used this Morat cruiser concept image.

Remarkably, it was able to figure out where the symmetry is in the asymmetrical concept. The auto-texture was less impressive (and the UV map is a complete mess in terms of being human-readable/editable), but it even invented detail for the rear and underside. And the generation took less than a minute.

While this wouldn't be useable for any real application without extensive hand-editing, it's still very impressive.

This is the test I did for a human character.

I can’t explain why, but the moray cruiser gives me Borderlands vibes. For AI material that is pretty cool. Impressive also with the Betty angles.

Looks like it could be useful for skipping the need for a specialized 3-D scanner to "import" a crude physical model mockup into a 3-D digital format. Just take a standard cell phone picture of the model against a blank background and load it in for the software to do its thing and edit from there.

Which makes me wonder which is cheaper, that specialized hardware or the AI software, while balancing that against the needed extra editing time of the latter?

You'd need to hand-edit the results in either case. And the software is certainly cheaper, since you don't buy it but rather pay a subscription fee.

I am impressed.

The speed the AI'volution is going ahead is impressive.
Now, if AI would stop inventing (hallucinating) stuff, my job would be gone in three weeks.

I bought a 3D printer years ago with an integrated scanner. The scanner was never able to produce a usable 3D model. So the AI has a big advantage there.
If every cloud had a silver lining, there would be a lot more plane crashes.
