Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
A new page, where Alex is finally being trusted enough to receive his own space-blaster. The phasers are set to kill, so bugs, beware!
Although a fine cutlass and an eye-patch would've been better...

You son of a bitch I'm in high noon's gonna give it to ya huckleberry.
Re: Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
Wonder how the power settings work, its an interesting notion that the bugs would be stomping around in all of that armor but he apparently doesnt need more than half power on a tiny little pistol. Maybe at higher power the beam is less focused so the penetration is diminished and that reduces the effect against armored targets?

I think most of the Umiak only have their exoskeleton and that the hardtroopers will be handled by Fireblade.QuakeIV wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 10:23 amWonder how the power settings work, its an interesting notion that the bugs would be stomping around in all of that armor but he apparently doesnt need more than half power on a tiny little pistol. I wonder how large the difference between 1 and 8 is.

In real life a russian scientist was shot through the head from a linear particle accelerator.
Was a clean shot. An X-ray showed that it made a straight line through and out his brain.
He survived remarkably
Particle beams do both kinetic and radioactive damage.
I can only presume that these Loroi pistols can do at least as much damage as a linear accelelerator, but are obviously more potent than that.
Basically IRL the effect would be like classic scifi. You fire a glowing beam and the target is knocked back with a smoking cauterized crater of a wound. I expect a lot of instant cauterization, perhaps because it is a particle beam. Were they lasers it would be more messy to see.
But because these are shelled bugs it will be likely less.
Unless some one wants to waste time cutting a bug down the middle.
At high setting I expect the pistols to be like an RPG... but by a beam.
Blowing stuff up.

I think that the blaster shots that are designed to be fired within an atmosphere will be rather short and intense bursts. At higher settings, those will not just leave a smoking hole, but splatter the target instead.

Exactly.
Lots of kinetic and thermal energy deposited into a small area tends blow stuff up.

Re: Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
Well weaponized partial weapons likely have the nuclei they shoot be significantly slower, but and much greater numbers. Which for the same energy cost would likely give you far less penetration, but much more damage. Mind you the penetration would still be quite high, but shooting through 6 bulkheads at only moderate damage is not THAT useful, and its likely to cause more issues on a pressurized ship than you want to deal with.

The default "handedness" for Loroi small arms seems to be "right".

Now's the time to see if that Enzin has any military training with respect to handling hand-held weaponry and aiming.
Pity he has no time for any training.

Dual safety and power controls? Would they be mechanically linked?Arioch wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 8:36 pmNah. Both sides are the same.Keklas Rekobah wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 2:33 pmThe default "handedness" for Loroi small arms seems to be "right".

I think it would be a mistake for Alex to use this weapon for anything other than self defense. Actively assisting the Loroi now might commit humanity to one side before we are ready to take that step.

Re: Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
Right now, one human demonstrating the willingness to fight for his "friends" may be at least as important as demonstrating any skill with hand-held directed energy weapons.
That said, it is a maritime tradition that even the passengers (e.g., "supercargo") will man the guns on a merchant vessel and make every effort to repel hostile boarders (e.g., "pirates").
Go get 'em, Alex!

If he tries to actively assist i wonder if this is a good idea.
I am not sure how to aim this thing, i dont see any holo or iron sights on it.
I guess thing below the barrel looks like laser?

The Pocket Historian tends to disagree on the matter of "friends". Maybe it is even right?Keklas Rekobah wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 9:34 pmRight now, one human demonstrating the willingness to fight for his "friends" may be at least as important as demonstrating any skill with hand-held directed energy weapons.
Um, but who are actually the pirates here? The Umiak merely picked up a derelict, it's those evil witch-elves that want to board and capture the ship.Keklas Rekobah wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 9:34 pmThat said, it is a maritime tradition that even the passengers (e.g., "supercargo") will man the guns on a merchant vessel and make every effort to repel hostile boarders (e.g., "pirates").

There are obvious differences between one of these:

And one of these (bottom panel):

I think Alex would know where to point the clicky.
