What would be a good symbol for the Umiak aside from their script? I'm making a set of MTG Duel Decks for the webcomic, and can't get any of the Umiak letters to look good alongside the Lobster-Ship or the Loroi letter L.

Umiak ships don't have official insignia on them, but some have iconic script patterns on them. A common one (as seen on the missile cruiser in the third panel of page 75) is "k-k-k-z" which means "do!" Another is a double- or triple-downward-pointing chevron ("cht-cht-cht"), which is the Umiak equivalent of writing "have a nice day" on your ship.

That's a dark sense of humor. I can certainly appreciate it. :D

Any chance we can get a closer look at the Umiak language as we have with Loroi Trade?

What does "erebas" (next to Leinnol's silhouette on the Tempest 3D wallpaper) mean?

It's Trade for Tempest.

I think it's unlikely, but one never knows. I would never have expected Trade to be as well fleshed out as it is.

Oh god no! Don't let it be true. I'd hoped they had not spread that far.

Jan Guillou? From a brief read of the Wikipedia page, I suspect that the only thing he has past Dan Brown is obnoxious politics.

jericho: as a writer he is actually pretty good, not 'OMG best thing since sliced bread' or anything, but pretty good.....his politics, well he is a weird one, unrepentant leftist commie bastard....but still a pretty good writer.

on a side note, he is also a hunter and quite literally told some paparazzi to leave his family alone, he was a celebrity but bother them and he'd get the 12 gauge and kill'em. the incident was turned over to the police who promptly shrugged and left it, apparently the razzi was a bit to intrusive and annoying for their taste, and that incident gives him some credit in my books.

<edit>
actually i think that his politics is at least partly just because he likes to argue, and takes the 'other side' just for a good argument, and usually in the real world when two people argue it is seldom one parties fault.

Trust me i know all about the bastard. He's been treated like an icon in my country by the press who still wheeps over the fall of the soviet union.
That incident is nothing unusual in sweden (well apart from the shotgun thing). Razzi's are viewed with contempt here on par with attempted murderers.

Nope it's far worse. He believes it and won't back down even if threatened.

How do Loroi treat those among them who have broken the law?

Also, what are some Union or planetary laws (absent the obvious) that we would classify as weird?

Carl Hamilton was a friend of my father's. I hadn't heard of Guillou prior to your mentioning him, though I've had the "Arn the Templar" movie in my Netflix queue for about a year and haven't got around to seeing it yet.
CJ Miller wrote:How do Loroi treat those among them who have broken the law?
Typical punishments, depending on the severity of the offense, range from fines/forfeiture of property, corporal punishment, demotion, exile/discharge, and death. Imprisonment is a temporary arrangement to hold someone for trial or to otherwise prevent her from doing harm in the short term; it is not generally used as a sentence/punishment. Many matters are under military jurisdiction, and as you can imagine, this means that offenders are often dealt with harshly, but it also means that military commanders have a significant amount of discretion as to how offenders are punished.
CJ Miller wrote:Also, what are some Union or planetary laws (absent the obvious) that we would classify as weird?
Loroi society is so controlled in every detail that specific laws are not as important as in a less structured society. Loroi minors have very limited rights, especially under Deinar law (which is sort of the Spartan extreme of Loroi cultures in legal terms). Especially for female warrior children who have not yet completed the trials of passage, all rights (included those to life and limb) rest with the legal guardians. While it's not legal to kill your own children, it is legal to turn them over to the authorities and demand that they be executed, for any reason.

Do the Loroi engage in any public games in the form of roman-like gladiatorial arenas?

If so are aliens allowed to compete?

The Loroi do have public athletic competitions, but blood sports are a thing of the past. Aliens have their own competitions which are held separately. It wouldn't make much sense to allow 7-foot 400-pound Barsam players on Loroi football teams.

Who cares about Loroi, we need to make contact with the Barsam now.

Who would you rather have for linemen, though? ;)
