Well as a precaution i think having a better gun than a pistol in a shuttle that can land on a hostile environment is a wise thing. unless shuttle wont be used to ground exploration. there could be another indigenous species that isnt umiak. That or hostile fauna/animal on an alien planet.

A cowboys never leave his gun :P but still it unloaded as i suppose bullet from that age must be quite rare and that pistol must be quite useless.

Likely, I expect if accidental weapons discharge is an issue... Kam {unless specifically ordered not to do so} would carry his guns everywhere - except he would have them unloaded; clips stowed in his belt compartments with his spares, and no chambered rounds.

Though... ask anyone who owns a firearm - only poorly maintained.. and I mean REALLY dog-beaten abused firearms with all the modern safeties and what not do NOT 'accidentally' discharge; if you are NOT being negligently idiotic...

hi hi

I ran into a bit of a snag while plotting things out, maybe one of you can help me with this. According to insider, human ships have an acceleration of about 4-6Gs, but it also says that traversing a star system takes several days to a week. Unless my math is way off, this doesn't add up. At 6.5Gs, it would still take a great deal of time to traverse even a single AU. Does anyone know of an online calculator that can determine how much distance you will have travelled with a given acceleration?

Well this is an issue for Arioch...something everyone has been I assume avoiding... What is the nature of the Outsider stardrive? The convention drives measured in G's are NOT stardrives they are normal hydrogen plasma reaction combustion of some sort. But that is not nearly enough for the trillions of miles of space between star systems! It seems to me it some sort of a subspace hyper-drive or shunt system at gravitic superstrand points in star systems. But I'm not sure I do not see any old discussion as yet of how the Outsider Stardrive works.

hi hi

I am not talking about traveling between stars, I'm talking about traveling around inside of a star system. From what I gather, FTL travel is pretty much instant. However, you need to traverse each system you jump to in normal space before you can move to the next.

Keep in mind... do not think of 6G's as a velocity... it is an acceleration. 4 days at 6G's of acceleration is pretty darn fast!

The space probes we launch from earth are not at a constant acceleration. They are accelerated to a velocity and just keep on going at that velocity...usually using attitude verniers to adjust their course and direction and the planets they are aimed at to slow their velocity with their gravity wells when needed.

To break speed one would literally have to turn the ship around and burn thrusters in the opposite direction for a similar amount of time they spent accelerating to come to a zero velocity relative to their starting velocity.

Ok, I did some (potentially very bad) maths about this...

1 day's accel at 6.5G (ie. 63.7m/s per second for 86,399.999999931 seconds...I used 86,400 for simplicity's sake ;) )

Will get you up to roughly 0.01835% of light speed. Or 5,503,679.99 m/s.

During the day of acceleration you will have travelled 1.589 AU (237,758,975 km)

An AU is 149,597,870.7km

If you stopped accelerating after that day you would travel one AU roughly every 7 1/2 hours (7.55hrs to be more exact)

I used this site: http://www.ajdesigner.com/constantaccel ... locity.php for some of the calculations...

This is the most maths I've used since I finished school...my head hurts

Intriguing...

Call it "Twin Rogues".
Looks like the binary terrestrial worlds in the life zone of the system might have been captured rogue space bodies. One is a a cold rock at .45 AU...should overall be warmer than earth mien-temperature wise... but may not have the atmo to retain that heat. Though the sun is significantly fainter than Sol...so maybe that is why. It may be roughly about earth's mien -temperature but luminosity .36 Sol... that's faint...maybe not.

Anomalous IR readings on the Rock partner of the binary... disturbing. Volcanic activity or evidence of industrial civilization or at least colonization?

Should probably enter system with very low velocity for as low and entry signature as possible and scan system passively for about a day with High Resolution Thermal Array or a Passive Electromagnetic Sensor Arrays and look for anymore anomalous IR Readings or any radio transmission before doing an active scan and armed approach toward the Binary Terrestrial worlds.

At least that is what Kamielle would suggest! :)

To quote the FTL Tech & Tactics page:
There is a flash of light that is proportional to the mass of the ship.
It also says you exit hyperspace at the same velocity you entered it. It does not say that velocity alters the intensity of the flash of light, however. It seems to me that as long as there's someone or something to see the flash, and they're looking in the right direction at the right time, then they'll see the arrival of the ships.

The only real advantage to a low speed entry (apart from safety when entering an unmapped system ;) ) is that you'd have the ability to quickly change your vector, potentially losing anyone who's tracking you. Though I'm not too sure how good sensor tech is.

hi hi

Here are a few more NPC characters to flesh out some of the important members of the crew.

• Chief Tactical Officer- Lieutenant Commander Parvati Gupton. She was transferred to the De Soto from the ECS -060 Chryse when Captain MacRae took command and the two have worked together in the past. She tends to get excited easily, especially at the prospect of action. While her grasp of naval tactics is average, she received recognition for her abilities to stay focused under duress and for her multi-tasking abilities.

• Communications Chief- Lieutenant Quyen Chu. Perhaps ironic that she is so soft spoken in person, but over a comms channel she picks up a commanding presence, largely on account of her crisp, steady and clear voice. She is instrumental in making sure people know what they need to know in a timely fashion.

• Damage Control Chief - Lieutenant Commander Kojiro Vance. Formerly the captain of a small courier vessel, Kojiro was commissioned in the TCA when humanity learned that it was headed into war. He is not known for panicking, shouting orders or reprimanding his subordinates. He does however tend to make it clear what his expectations are.

• Chief Engineer - Lieutenant Commander Leonardo Rodriguez. He is a big picture sort of person. Although he doesn't do much hands on work himself, he knows what needs to get done and who is best suited for the job.

• Mission Specialist - Ensign Bernard Euler. He tends to be serious all the time. Not one for social interaction or time off, he spends a much of his time working on computer simulations every possible waking hour.

• Security Chief - Lieutenant Commander Delgado. He has a passion about justice that drives him into danger. He is well versed in moral philosophy and tends to be selfless in his actions. He does, however, have very little tolerance for misbehavior.

-----
Department Heads:
Administration - Captain MacRae
Operations - Lieutenant Commander Gupton
Supply - Commander Ptak
Navigation - Lieutenant Lynn
Engineering - Lieutenant Commander Rodriguez
Maintenance - Lieutenant Commander Vance
Communications - Lieutenant Chu
Medical - Lieutenant Callis
Safety - Lieutenant Commander Delgado
Loroi Representative* - Lillasoni

The department heads are considered the senior staff, but it is common practice on board the DeSoto for other members of the department to tag along when they have some useful information to add. (read everyone else who's not on the list) *The Loroi are really the ones in charge of the operation, regardless of how much leeway they decide to give their allies.

(P.S. Sidearms are not a necessary part of an officers uniform, though some do prefer to wear them. It should be noted that Captain MacRae has never worn one himself.)
-----
Other Loroi NPCs
Soroin Mallas Totor Manzin (Flame Oath) - Second in Command
Tenoin Arrir Pideir (Flint) - Lead Interceptor Pilot
Tenoin Narrat Senai (Shawl) - Second Interceptor Pilot

-----
Sensor technology in Outsider is good. Not much chance of being stealthy. However, there are still opportunities to misdirect enemies about what your goals and intentions are.

P.S. Oh gods, it is already midnight? How does this happen? I have to wake up in 4 hours. >_< Tomorrow... tomorrow for sure I'll have the first in character post.

lol, don't push yourself too hard icekatze, I'm eager to get going but there's no need for you to burn yourself out. I'm happy to wait a while longer.

Not too long though

Nice NPC's btw...

I missed that part about down-slip signature being based upon ship mass.

So a better idea would be to come in as close to the out system Gas Giant and use its bulk to hide down-slip signature and a higher velocity is best to avoid going too deep into the Gas Giant's gravity well. Not sure how capable a pilot can plan their down-slip on arrival its kinda random - though a 'daredevil pilot' could go for a tangent jump and hope to target it right. Though I'm sure no safety-minded captain would do it on a whim. Guess it would depend upon the jump distance and their orbital velocity.

Arg, i should keep reading instead of answering post by post. i had the same site and came roughly to the same conclusion. but am sure i found a site that would tell you how far you would have traveled at constant acceleration.

I really think an exhaustive crew list including player and their function on the ship would help with the flow of the ship.

Maybe also a small floor map of the ship that tell were who is were (with number so we can put them between [] to show were our character is. could help in interaction.

Just a suggestion but i really think the first part is needed to prevent confusion, even more early in the game. after all we knew each other for quite some time.

I agree. Something like the other RP's Character Thread with a little info on the ship would help. Doesn't have to be exhaustive right off the bat though. Just enough NPCs to get the story moving. You can always add them as the RP progresses.

Ok, I'm a little confused...Icekatze has the Captain giving Donna the conn, and getting ready to leave. Is Kam's maneuvering the ship and his questions directed at the Captain set before he leaves or is Kam using the comm?

Opps...I had not realized the Captain had left the bridge yet... I have not gotten a responce from the captain yet as to my question about a staff meeting.

Need clarification.

EDIT: Ok.. I fixed my post so reread... it should be clearer now. I hope. :)
