Yeah, "This is on par for the Defender of the Garden" was also my first thought.
But it is different if your cracked helmet is in vacuum and far away from any other visible danger,
or in vacuum and under the hydraulic fist of an enemy looking at you and intend on defending its ship.
I wonder how often more a cracked helmet will pop up during the story.
Can we make that a running gag that Alex goes into vacuum and gets a cracked helmet.
The Ur-Quan Masters finally gets a continuation of the story! Late backing possible, click link.
They're not actually in a vacuum currently; two pages ago they noticed the compartment repressurizing right before Little Timmy right here paid them a surprise visit.
I wonder if in the previous page Beryl was pinned as well by the hardtrooper. She lost her rifle then, and now I wonder if the "helping hand" picking Alex' dropped gun is hers or Alex preparing for a blind shot.

Thanks for reminding me!
It's been so long ago, I forgot about that.

Alex... Alex...
Did you learn nothing from Thanos? You should have gone for the head!
Alex actually could have been aiming for the head but the hardtrooper just had greater horizontal velocity than Alex could track. A bit more to the right and his shot would have been grazing its head if not plinking an eye sensor.

He's never been in an actual infantry battle before. He'd have to recognise a weak point, aim for it, and take the shot all while an enemy he only just encountered is moving toward him.
I flinch and panic fire in that situation playing video games, never mind a real live combat situation.
If every cloud had a silver lining, there would be a lot more plane crashes.
Yup, and while it's hard to portray in still images, one can assume that that Hardtrooper was moving /fast/ into the compartment. It caught Beryl, a trained soldier who has been prepared to fight this /exact/ enemy for all of her life, off-guard and disarmed her. Given that, I think it's entirely understandable for Alex not to make a shot which even IRL trained soldiers would consider to be very difficult.
And given that this is the second time in, what, two days that Alex has had his helmet-visor cracked by battle damage, I think he's going to flinch every time he hears glass crack for the rest of his life. For decades, his nieces and nephews will wonder why 'Uncle Alex' goes pale every time someone drops their glass at a family reunion.

And why 'Aunt Beryl' disintegrates any large insect she sees.

Well, if the background of this isn't the look of a shell crab about to get telekinetically launched several kilometers out to sea (and in multiple pieces), then I apparently can't read Fireblade's facial expressions.

I agree with this, IMO you can have super honed reflexes but thats not his job or seemingly his interest either. When they gave him the gun his first thought was 'oh yeah i remember this from academy' which more than addresses that point.
Good to see some people get Alex isn't an infantryman hell that bugger doesn't look like it has a weak point not to mention that head likely isn't holding its brain. Where would that things weak spot be it is functioning very well for missing a limb which usually means no more fighting for us humans.
